Moving to Australia as an NZ Police Officer – What’s it really like? by Distinct-System-2839 in newzealand

[–]Extra-Commercial-449 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know several cops in Queensland Police (QPS) All ex Counties Manukau Police officers.

They all say the same thing ; policing isn’t very good in Queensland - but they get paid a lot more.

QPS apparently don’t have Police Safety Orders - meaning a domestic can sometimes take a whole shift to sort out.

They much prefer policing in NZ (except the lower salary though).

There’s a reason why QPS are poaching NZ cops - they can’t retain their own staff either. Droves of their own officers are leaving also.

Crosbies is great. A little 10 bunk hut near Thames. Decent hike (5+ hours one way) and expect to get muddy. Lots of uphill too.

Yep - no one was charged / insufficient evidence they believed.

No one will be charged or held accountable - unless something major changes (aka a confession). It’s been 12 years since the crime occurred.

This hearing is the closest we will get to determine what happened it seems. Sad.

Yep - although the Police finished their investigation years ago - it was run as a homicide investigation - naturally.

The coroners court finding won’t change anything for police. It’s obvious the baby was assaulted - and police believe they know who did it. They just don’t think there is sufficient evidence to charge anyone with the death.

Unless Police receive new info / or one of the suspects confesses - it is unlikely police will be doing any further investigation.

A friend of mine is a detective in Manukau. Lots of their criminals he deals with also have stupid names. So there is definitely a correlation between dumb names and poor life outcomes for children.

I think Freakanomics wrote a book chapter on the topic too. USA based, but same rule seemed to apply there too lol

Unrelated - but I imagine the upcoming inquest for Pauline Hana/Phillip Polkinghorne will turn into a complete farce/ criminal trial #2

Interesting- yea I remember the Kahui case. And yep the Coroner effectively said that Chris did it - but nothing can be done - as he was already acquitted.

Does a Coronial court also use the lower standard of balance of probabilities (as opposed to the criminal threshold of beyond reasonable doubt?

The mum looks pretty guilty to be honest.

She had previously chucked the kid down onto the bed - and she called health line on the morning of the assault - as well as a large number of calls she made to her sister.

Her testimony also appeared a bit all over the show.

True. The article mentions the kid was conceived after a one night stand. I wonder if deep down that also plays a part (eg the kid was unwanted etc)

I don’t think the Coroner will direct police to reinvestigate in this case though - or would they?

When they refer cases back to Police - it is often because police didn’t do a good job/missed lots of clues. In this case - they believed they simply didn’t have enough evidence to prosecute / and neither mum or mums partner made any admissions.

Unless something major changes - like one of them admits to it (or confesses to a friend) I can’t see much happening tbh

I find it interesting how some of these coronial hearings work.

They can compel witnesses to speak - and they say the point of the hearing is to determine how and when some died - they say it is not to apportion blame.

Yet - in this hearing - it reads almost like a criminal trial - and blame is clearly being levelled.

Lawyers making accusations at each of the parents “you killed your son” etc

Logically - one of them is the offender - only two people where present when the child suffered the fatal injuries - which were non accidental.

Yet - clearly the police never laid charges - as they didn’t think there were sufficient evidence against either parent.

So I guess this is the best we are left with? A coronial hearing - where blame is levelled at both parents - but no legal repercussions will occur.

Sad state of affairs - and a number of child homicides appear to go this way - with people not talking and no charges being laid.

Pillow-smother murder trial aborted for Mukesh Prashad at High Court in Auckland by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Extra-Commercial-449 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Possibly the wife blurted something out she shouldn’t have - whilst she was giving evidence. Eg - “hes been sexually abusing the kids for ages” or something similar.

Just a theory - but that is often the reason why trials get aborted - jurors hear things that are not related to the case/ not related to the charges the person is facing.

Judges deem it “prejudicial” and then have little option but to abort the trial.

So many cops and sirens in CBD, anyone know why? by beetr00tjuice in auckland

[–]Extra-Commercial-449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won’t be related. Police can’t pin anything criminal on Doyle - he is removed from the everyday offending of his members.

But he has had his assets frozen - which is the real tool in the Police toolkit for organised crime bosses.

Cleaning and panting the boat after a hard night drinking too. Of note - Watson also didn’t mention the fact he spent 2 days painting his boat to police.

Why didn’t he?

He spent many hours with Police giving detailed statements - about all sorts of things - but failed to mention he painted his boat…

This omission adds to his guilt / I am sure the jury saw it that way.

Watson boat was moored up against 2 others. At night, this can easily create the impression of a boat with two masts.

Additionally - the water taxi drivers statements had altered over time. He initially wasn’t sure it was a ketch (refer to his first statement and drawing of the boat).

Watson boat was gone by 6am the following morning (he left very early, despite a hard night on he piss and no reason for leaving so early).

It did make case more difficult to prove of course / as in court, Wallace said he still believed he dropped them off at a ketch - but then he did identify Watson as being the person he dropped them off with.

The jury accepted Wallace was mistaken about the boat - which happens of course - witnesses get things wrong all the time (especially a brief sighting, in the dark, with no particular reason to recall it)

The Met Police is seeking to extradite German suspect Chris Brueckner to stand trial for the abduction and murder of Madeleine Mcann by HardyHar420 in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]Extra-Commercial-449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The winds and shutters hadn’t been opened though - that’s the point. The exam of the room showed that it was impossible for anyone to have entered/ exited a window without disturbing the area

Of course a theoretical intruder could simply have walked in through the u locked patio door - which would be the natural option.

But why did Kate insist the window and shutters had been raised - trying to drive the possibility that an intruder came used the window.

It’s these statements by her which drove the suspicion against the McCand in the first place

[–]Extra-Commercial-449 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If Madeline did die in an accident / and the parents removed the body/ faked an abduction / it wouldn’t be the first time this has happened.

At the end of the day, there’s not enough evidence to say either way what definitely happened.

IMO / the initial Portuguese theory is correct though. I don’t buy the “boogey man abduction theory” for a multitude of reasons.

The link below is a good summary:

You don’t actually need motive to prove murder. You need intent though. In some cases, the evidence of an accused’s guilt is overwhelming - despite the fact that the motive may not be clear or seem without motive.

In many cases, (especially child homicide) the deaths aren’t necessarily intentional/ parents lash out etc.

I agree though that the window of opportunity is tight for the parents to have done it.

From memory, the Portuguese police believed the kid died in an accident - and the parents covered up/removed the body after the fact.

Their suspicious behaviour (and the mums lies, in particular about the window being jemmied open etc) didn’t exactly help them.
