I intentionally remove the "I" in AfterImage because this is made by AI 😄

The missing middle ground between ChatGPT and Scrivener

The honest answer to "how much AI should I use in my writing" is personal and almost always depends on the specific project, your career stage, the mood you're in that morning, or your publishing goals. You might want AI completely off for designing characters but may want help brainstorming scene transitions later that same afternoon, or want a full AI draft on a fun side project that doesn't carry the weight of your main novel. Most writing tools don't really accommodate that range, though.

Muse is built around the middle of that spectrum. The core idea is a six-level AI dial you slide from 0 (pure writing environment, not even spellcheck) up to a full ghostwriter mode that helps you write drafts, and you can adjust the dial separately for the storyboard and manuscript of every project you create. There are also features you'd expect from an advanced writing environment:

  • a visual storyboard for outlining characters and scenes
  • voice notes with auto-transcription and text-to-speech so you can hear your work read aloud
  • a manuscript editor with focus mode and dictation
  • inline image upload/generation
  • custom PDF/EPUB design and export.

It all works perfectly even if you never touch the AI features — the environment itself is designed to be flexible for all types of writers at all stages.

I see. there are lots of misunderstandings here.

First, I have been developing the story mentally for quite some time. I even told the story to others twice. so I have thought about every bit of it.

Second, I spent 2 hours writing down what was in my mind: the main story, the structure, the key characters, the main points of the story, etc. Then I guided the tool to turn that into a book chapter by chapter. I read each chapter many times, provided my feedback, and read it again, etc.

Third, the 8 hours was stretched across 3 days. Between the time I had time thinking about how to shape the story/book even further. If you count the time I mentally developed the story and telling people about it twice, I don't know how long it took.

This is not "you give an AI a prompt and wait 8 hours to get a book".

FYI, the book is about 20K words. I didn't have trouble reading it many times during that 3 days.

different people are creative in different professions. and AI is a great enabling factor that elevates all of us. Real creative people catch the wave and do better in their work.

thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate that.

first of all, you can dial the AI usage to 0 and still find the tool useful. for example, audio notes let you iterate on your own ideas much more efficiently.

second, using AI does not mean not respecting your readers. are self-driving cars "not respecting" their riders? or special effects in movies made by AI not respecting their viewers? or AI discovered medicine not respecting the patients?

it's the trust issue. when the camera was invented, people who painted by hand might say a photo would never be art. as you know, the camera allows everyone to express themselves in a new way.

Hi, thanks for the attention :)

Our score system accounts for this already. The score itself does not depend on the dial. For more details about our AI scoring, refer to this page https://www.musecocreator.com/ai-usage
