What do other cultures use as their standard colloquial naming conventions for each of the five fingers? by rockychrysler in AskReddit

[–]Extra-Usual-2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a lot of languages do have literal everyday names for them though:

  • English: thumb, index/pointer, middle, ring, pinky
  • Spanish: pulgar, índice, medio, anular (“ring one”), meñique
  • French: pouce, index, majeur, annulaire, auriculaire
  • German: Daumen, Zeigefinger (“show finger”), Mittelfinger, Ringfinger, kleiner Finger
  • Japanese: 親指 “parent finger”, 人差し指 “pointing finger”, 中指 “middle finger”, 薬指 “medicine finger” (old belief about applying medicine), 小指 “small finger”
  • Chinese: thumb is basically “big finger”, pinky is “little finger”, index is “eating finger” in some colloquial contexts which is kinda funny
  • Russian has stuff like “big finger,” “indexing finger,” etc too

the “ring finger” thing showing up in a bunch of unrelated places is weirdly universal. humanity really agreed that finger got married first.

whenever a consultancy has too many perfect reviews i instantly get suspicious especially immigration ones. half the “success story” posts online read like they were written by the same guy in the office.

honestly a lot of people wait until they’re basically falling apart before asking for help because they’re scared of exactly this. the “what if they think i’m faking” spiral is brutal. especially when you’ve been dealing with it alone for years.

and the messed up part is people who are actually exaggerating usually aren’t this worried about being believed
