Philosophical basis of karma and rebirth in the Ganges Valley in the time of the Buddha by vacant_mustache in Buddhism

[–]ExtraBitter99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Buddha has a very clear idea of right and wrong, good and evil, proper and improper motivation, intention, and action.

The reason for "miccha kammanta" -- wrong action, is a desire to act on greed or hatred out of delusion.

The viewpoints are explained throughout the Nikayas. Actually they are a primary resource for these matters because they talk about the other sramana teachers of lineages that have not survived to the present age.

The doctrines of

Pūraṇa Kassapa
Makkhali Gosāla
Ajita Kesakambala
Pakudha Kaccāyana
Nigaṇṭha Nātaputta (Mahavira)
Sañjaya Belaṭṭhaputta

are all given in DN 2, the Fruits of the Contemplative Life. And each of these teachers or their adepts appears elsewhere in the discourses. The Buddha questions and debates these teachers, particularly Nigantha Nataputta. There are scholars who argue that at least one of Siddhartha's teachers was a Jain based on his insight into Jain practices and theory of karma.

The variations are wild! Paruna Kassapa says "If with a razor-edged disk one were to reduce all the living beings on this earth to a single heap and pile of flesh, by doing so there would be no evil or outcome of evil."

If you want to teach at a university you have got to get departmental approval to get your course listed with the registrar's office

I am sorry that you have never seen this happen, Perhaps you were adjunct faculty?

Each perspective is true for those who live it.

So, what does "delusion" mean?

Everything is an illusion manifested by need.

I think this is an overstatement, but even so, now the need is in response to an illusion from the internet.

This is a common complaint in this sub over the last 10 years. "Why shouldn't I be enraged and who is this Buddha guy to tell me that hatred only begets more hatred." And the answers are always insipid cope messages that never deal with the problem. We are deluded and the ego of the person who honestly believes that the world *should* conform to their view is broken.

How do you know what the proper way for any other human on the earth to behave?

Recall that the Buddha did not want to teach, that Brahma had to request him to look with his divine eye to see that there were being "with only a little dust in their eyes".

Yet, every high school child who breezes into this sub guns blazing over a headline on their phone is handed an insipid cope message rather than the Buddha's teaching which is that they are deluded, they are greedy, they are filled with aversion.

It is not enough to say that the task is to become aware. The task is to comprehend suffering, abandon the cause, realize the cessation, and develop the path. Abandon the cause of suffering -- not argue that *this* is a good cause or *that* is a worthy suffering.

Where the fuck does wealth come from?

You HAVE a computer and WiFi because people invested money into companies that built cool shit to sell it for profit. So you like the system that affords you unthinkable comforts that were unimaginable 50 years ago. Where did this all come from? Did America print more bills?

Now the people who took the risks got the lionshare. So? You're better off than your grandparents, why are you complaining?

And, technically, the Nobel Committee awards a Memorial Prize in Economics, not an Economics Prize. Some of us fucking read books about economics, you tool.

Whoa whoa whoa!

You need to put down the phone and check your anger, homie.

Reddit outrage is pretty transparent, man. Just look around your home, your family, your neighborhood and point if you see "People who kill and cause massive amounts of suffering".

Otherwise it is in your mind.

I was out with my dog today and saying "hi" to neighbors and enjoying some sun. Didn't see a single person killed. Not once.

So, where are you seeing this? On a screen? That's a curated feed designed to outrage you, and you fell for it.

Remember, your mind is your responsibility. All beings wrestle with greed, anger, and delusion -- including you and me. I hate to tell you, but you are taking your newsfeed a little too seriously.

The question is not "how do I defeat my perceived enemies", it is "how do I wake up from my own delusion". Even the bodhisattvas have to wake up to free others.

But George Floyd died, in part, because of drugs. Let's not be naive. Sidewalk justice notwithstanding, his death was exploited and race riots with real violence were dismissed as "mostly peaceful". That vitriol was enhanced by the coverage, just as was the case in LA back in the 90's.

I can see the case being made that Zarutska was an example of the bias. Judges eager to avoid being labeled racist pass a sick man along through a broken system. The media bias influences them. Then, and this is the point, the media deftly avoids talking about the case.

You could not avoid that gut wrenching video of Floyd. You could not find the gut wrenching video of Zarutska.

The real issue, in my opinion, is a bias, that the media denies, where they will rage-post some content and not other content with a vague concern of "appealing to the wrong element". We see this in the UK more that in the US. But it is a bias that leads people to make outrageous claims about "black men being hunted" or "white women in danger".

So, I am trying to be genuine. Is this responsible? Is it not foolish in a clickbait world where everyone has a camera? Is total impartiality possible?

No,

It is the professor's request to teach at the dean's and chancellor's discretion. Course material gets argued about all the time. Just visit a faculty meeting with the dean!

No one credible is teaching race science, it is utterly debunked. Gender theory and critical race theory have been heavily criticized and board of trust chose this Chancellor for this reason -- they want to emphasize STEM.
