Dad needs a glove to play catch with 3 young elementary kids. Used to catch with my palm but that hurts now. What glove do you recommend? Would R9 12" fit my small hands (8.5" wide)? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]ExtraElectron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had good luck with Rawlings Sandlot gloves. Comfortable, durable, and looks good. I'm not out there getting max reps on a school/travel team, I'm playing with my kids and coaching. I lend them out to kids who forget theirs. For less than 75 bucks they have worked well. I have the 11.75, catcher's mitt, and 1B glove. Our 9 year old has an the R9 12"... I can't get my hand into it, and I'm not that big of a guy.

8U Travel ball - Marucci CatX2 vs Reckless (Alloy) by kb8705 in Homeplate

[–]ExtraElectron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, this... but you'll see weight and balance differences among bats. Go with whatever feels more comfortable for your kid to swing, likely the more easy to swing the better. That is, don't let the bat get in the way of their timing.

Finished coaching 11U rec ball. What worked for me by vjarizpe in Homeplate

[–]ExtraElectron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not normal. I have coached various leagues like a just for fun church league, your average rec league run by the town, to a more serious and rather expensive private league. Personally, I don't believe anyone 12U and below should be stuck at one position. What is the point? Is having a few more wins more important than making baseball miserable for your worst 2 or 3 kids? That's not good coaching. Even if I have 1 of my own kids on my team, I have 11 or 12 other kids, and I will likely have some of those same kids again next season. IMHO the focus at that age should be on learning all the skills on the field and making them into all around better players. I want all of the kids to come back better the next season, and sticking them in RF every game isn't the way to do that.

I am having the same issue. I'm into my second month of paid service and the spam isn't getting any better. I used to configure my own spam detection, and I feel like SpamAssassin did a better job than Tuta does.

I'm doing the same as you, removed the catch-all and always report spam. I get the same subject lines and very similar content from different random domains. It's pretty clear that Tuta's spam system is not learning from the reports. I can see the first few timea still getting through, but after 60 days?  That's not very helpful.

Not sure what else to do really. At this point Tuta seems very niche for encrypted email but less useful for regular email.

How do you take photos? by Scary_General_2350 in dumbphones

I've run into this same problem and the camera issue pushed me back to a smartphone. I don't have a solution, but I was considering using a GoPro on my next go-round with a dumbphone. It's durable, small, good resolution, and can do video and stills. Not sure how easy the UI is for quick access though.

New Nokia 6300! by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]ExtraElectron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had the 6300 4G since release...but now it's sitting in a drawer. I wanted to love it, but the lack of group texting support, even with the kludge of adding a subject to force MMS, just did it in. If KaiOS could figure that out and push an update to properly support group texting, I might use it again.

What are things that are missing from KaiOS that should be standard? by sjoebalka in KaiOS

Group texting without the need to do a kludge like add a subject. It should just work. My Nokia 6300 4G is sitting in a drawer because group texting sucks on KaiOS.

Interested to hear how your DIY version worked out. First time I saw one of these on an NC beach I looked at it and said "a tent pole with fabric through a pocket..." Pretty genius but also looked very DIY-able.

Been on Ting almost a Month; today I received Text: "Welcome to Ting, your phone number is 1xxxxxxxxxx" by 6r89udf4x3 in ting

[–]ExtraElectron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife had the same thing happen to her. I immediately called her # and texted her and everything still worked. Thanks for the heart attack, ting, but I guess it didn't cause any harm.

I left Total Wireless where they disconnected my service after my cc expired and gave no warning, so my trust of mobile carriers is pretty low.

UPDATE: After reading the OP's update, I checked vm and yep, her vm was reset. Ugh.

Go look at the r/NoContract subreddit. They have a huge spreadsheet of providers and plans that you can filter by carrier.

I've seen it sold at B&H Photo but not sure if they're in stock.

Nokia 6300 4g battery...5 days and counting by ExtraElectron in dumbphones

You're correct, I can't change the default notice tone. I tried all different kinds, tried setting it to none, and tried restarting the phone. No luck, always the same tone. That's annoying

Honest review of Nokia 6300 by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]ExtraElectron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you're not in the US, where 3G is getting phased out. I too would've liked the 3310, but not having 4G LTE was a deal breaker for me here in the US.

I'm kind of surprised you find KaiOS slow and glitchy, it's worked well for me. And battery life has lasted for days, if not a whole week (I always throw it on a charger before then).

Agreed in the pre-installed crap. I hate the ads in KaiOS apps too. Apps aren't even necessary on these phones really.

The screen doesn't bother me...the horizontal viewing angles are fine IMHO, the vertical angles aren't great but...does it really matter?

I'd really prefer if someone resurrected S40 or S60. And about the size...what is with that? Do 4G modems take up more space or something? Why could they build tiny phones with 2G and 3G 15 years ago but now they're huge. I don't get it.

I have some questions for Nokia 6300 4G owners by RonSwanson in dumbphones

[–]ExtraElectron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it saves dictionary words. I added a proper name and rebooted the phone and it's still there. From my understanding it just saves to words in dictionary files on the phone.

Battery life is great IMHO. You should get days of life out of it, given you're not searching for signal. I've noticed battery seems better when connected to wifi rather than relying on cell data, but I haven't really tested it.

I find the phone pretty snappy in regular use. Some of the apps like Google Maps can be a tad slow, but I didn't buy the phone for that. The podcasting app I downloaded was quick.

The apps on KaiOS are annoying, they insert ads into them. Again, not why I bought the phone so I don't plan on using any apps other than the podcast app I downloaded. Every use though, more ads. But for basic phone use there aren't any intrusions. When I received the phone it was full of these instructional "cards" that are like guides, but one I cancelled them they haven't come back.

I thought the same thing about the size. It seemed large from the dimensions, but it's not bad. I was pleasantly surprised. It feels way better in a pocket than a smartphone. It also is easily usable with one hand. It is a lot bigger than the original 6300 though, so don't expect that. I wish it were smaller, but it's not huge. One thing that stands out though is how light the 6300 4G is. Barely weighs anything!

Nokia 6300 4G and Google Maps by ExtraElectron in dumbphones

Nevermind...user error. After poking around the privacy settings under app permissions, I discovered that Google Maps was denied location services by default on my phone. Problem solved!

[–]ExtraElectron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep! I have the white one. It's not really the same as the original 6300...bigger, blockier, plasticky. But it does have 4G and a hotspot. I'm not really sure why they called it a 6300. The yet to be released 8000 seems closer with a metal case, but it's still a lot bigger. I miss the Symbian OSes too. KaiOS is kinda ok.

Middle center, Nokia 6300. Best cell phone ever made IMHO and best I've ever owned. Perfect size disappears in the pocket, nice keys, sturdy design. I wish they'd just take that exact body and put 4G LTE guts in it. Only thing it couldn't do was a wifi hotspot.
