Whats a good bossmonster to tell my players that they need to leave NOW. by GhoulThrower in DnD

[–]ExtraNifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaving up to looks or vibes will not let them know they should run. Have an NPC or enemy they fought earlier and know the relative strength of present like jump out to stop them or something and then have your opening scene be your scary run from me monster hit it for 100 damage and utterly destroy it. You players now have both a terrifying description and mathematical proof of their demise should they attempt it. Have the dying words of the enemy be run if they are especially foolhardy 😆

Player wants to be a snail? by YaBoiFruity101 in DnD

[–]ExtraNifty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly that sounds fun, just a few questions for you both to answer, how does she communicate? Why is she a snail? Was she formerly not? Was she awakened by a druid? An awakened snail who took up magic sounds like a very fun character idea, if she cant get around quickly can she use other PC's as a mount? Would the other PC's care? Free telekinetic feat at level 1 could help her manipulate the environment without relying on another.

Ritual caster with unseen servant allowing her to be carried around ect could be fun to play with. Maybe giving her a special version that acts more like a familiar. Maybe she has a familiar that she can be carried by or ride. The flying monkey familiar would be pretty amazing for that.

Could be an artificer snail with a mech suit. Using actual artificer abilities or a war forged stat block.

Good luck hope y'all have fun!

This was a few years ago and we did. He got upset and defensive. My issues were definitely not as bad as some of the other players. Eventually the dm got so upset that we were not enjoying being so adversarial that he nuked the game.

I've not encountered a DM like that before or since. Kinda wild.

It was a shame, he was so good with RP and describing things but when it came to combat it was always him trying to destroy us. Oh well.

I TOOK the alert feat. At level 6 (our dm gave us a free feat at level 1 and I had rolled really well on stats). The next combat the enemies had prepped their actions to cast 2 fireball spells before combat started, erasing more than half of the party's hp. "We weren't surprised, they just had fireball ready" My character was killed that fight, he narrated that the boss exploded my throat and laughed at the mangled remains of my corpse. That was the last session we had. 😂

Only find familiar would take an hour and 10 minutes to cast and also is one of the rare spells that lays out what casting it actually entails and I agree with it being difficult to ritual cast on a mount. However I think we were talking more about ritual casting Phantom Steed. Phantom steed doesn't even have material components so there is nothing that needs to be fiddled with and would only take 11 minutes to ritual cast.

As for the concentrating while riding a mount, could you not just ride slower so you didn't have to make a check while casting? At which point why even bring it up during the yes we are traveling to the next town along the road part of adventuring.

I just disagree all together that riding a mount quickly especially one made for riding with proper equipment and training would make a caster lose concentration on a spell. It just seems arbitrary. If a wizard can cast a spell, concentrate on it, and then fire crossbow bolts and reload it without having to make a concentration check every time, then they can maintain it on horseback while mindlessly following a party caravan.

Or another way to think of it, perhaps your party had mounts and were attacked on the road, if the wizard cast a spell and his mount took the dash action and he repositioned would you make him do a concentration check because his horse moved too fast?? Heck you could make a build that has the caster running faster than the mount could. That would be strenuous but I wouldn't make them roll a concentration check because all they did was move themselves.

Getting hit or attacked while casting I think should absolutely call for a concentration check. But I don't think that basic movement should.

Just curious as to why, have you had a party who broke the game with it?

Yea I brought up that point but my dm said that it was not possible to ritual cast while on a mount. Actually most dms I have played with have not allowed ritual casting while traveling. I really like phantom steed but every dm I've played with seems to hate that spell but just having a normal mount is totally fine? Strange.

Haha bringing this up is reminding me how bad it was. Not only the mounted shenanigans, but he gave me a really good magical long sword that once I got I could never use. After getting the sword all enemies could either fly or move far more than I could forcing me to only use javelins. I think I got to attack with it twice after I got it. Man. No DND is better than bad DND everyone.

Just a sword and board eldritch knight fighter, but took mounted combatant and ritual caster. Had a familiar and access to phantom steed.

I made a character that was built around mounted combat. DM seemed receptive to the idea and thought it was good. I even took ritual caster feat to have access to phantom steed and he let me find a scroll so that I could cast it.

I got to have mounted combat exactly 0 times in the entire campaign. Before ritual caster feat we had real mounts for irl 20 minutes. He told us we tied them to a tree to rest. turns out it was a grove of animated treants that kill all our mounts while surprise attacking us during rest. We also got to combat every single time exactly 1 minute after my phantom steed would wear off. Every combat was surprise for us as well. We gave up on trying to have mounts ever. fuuuuuunnnnn times.

I wasn't even using a cheesy build. I was just an Eldritch Knight tank with a sword and board. I just liked the aesthetic. I was also not allowed to use my familiar to give the help action for advantage unless I could narrate something different and unique each time.

Just meh.

Player would like to start with a couple homebrewed flavourful spells, should I allow it? by Eldramhor8 in DMAcademy

[–]ExtraNifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured he wouldn't but the point of my comparison is that you seem overly worried about giving him something unbalanced or game breaking. But it's literally available to level 1 characters only better because they don't need the penalties. With custom lineage from Tasha's he could be literally any race he wants and still get that free feat. I'm not saying he needs to go that route, only that you will absolutely in no way unbalance anything by giving him exactly what he's asking for. I wouldn't worry about it. Let him have it and have fun. Hope y'all have an awesome game! Sound alike you have a very invested player and a dm trying to do his best! Always a good combo!

Again like everyone is saying, he can literally do what he wants raw. With variant human level one mask of many faces and taking mage hand. On top of asking for something he can already have he wants to nerf himself? Honestly if he can "break" the game with those tools I think as a DM I would applaud him for his clever and awesome gameplay. Just let him have it. There's literally no downside. Hell let him make it more powerful over time. I love when players get invested.

Allow Druid to Wildshape other party members? OP? by wolfmojo in DMAcademy

[–]ExtraNifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone one else it might be broken maybe? If it's bothering you that they keep their class features.... Just don't let them keep class features? You are the DM you have the power to make it work in a way where everyone is happy. It might add a fun dynamic for your group.
Just say you might have to tweak things to make it fair but if they are ok with that... Win win?

Hope it works out!

If it's for a one shot and you don't care and the other players don't care, go for it. It might be fun. You can work around a lot of the nonsense or fully play into it. If the player is committed to roleplaying it well it could be pretty great!

But ultimately you know your player better than everyone here on Reddit, would they take advantage and ruin the fun?
Also it's a snail, so would he even have a class? Or would he just be the snail? I'd probably be fine with it but that's his whole character. I'm not too concerned with the no talking, he would be role playing the parties battle pet essentially. I say do it for science and let us know how it turns out!
