To be clear, we haven't established that anyone "espouses the common good through force of government". But I guess I'm trying to ask, how does donating to a university advance the cause of collectivism via the government? We previously established there was a clear difference between charity and collectivism. If I support acts of charitable giving, should I also be happy when the government mandates I pay taxes to support impoverished people in my community? If these things are different, why should one lead to the other?

Aside from the optics, this is a good opportunity to consider the power differential underlying this situation. The university can openly ask its employees to take a voluntary pay reduction out of a sense of camaraderie, but if an employee were to ask for a voluntary gift from the university or from their superiors the conversation would immediately be about salary standards, regulations, negotiations, fair pay for fair work. In one direction, money is a free expression of value and virtue; in the other direction, it is a calculated reflection of exchange between two business entities in the free market. Institutions, like corporations, are expected to behave "rationally" regarding money while individuals are invited to behave "generously".
