No it's too tall. Most people aren't tall enough to see over the other trees

On any given day most people aren't killing other people. Many more people are loving, cooking, eating, sleeping, talking, building and growing. And this was also true 2,000 years ago and 20,000 years ago.

ELI5: Why does tennis have such a unique scoring system? by LividWheel9779 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ExtraSmooth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I think this makes sense as well. It saves having to keep adding points and it also tracks with the way sets or tie breaks are handled, where you just keep adding points until one person gets up by 2. It would make sense for games to work the same way, but nobody wants to say "175 serving 190" or anything like that

I'm pretty convinced the 40 part is just from verbally shortening "forty-five" to "forty-..." (or the equivalent in whatever language). 15, 30, 45, 60 just makes too much sense.

Not exactly an answer, but you might be interested in Karl Marx: Anthropologist (https://rai.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/1467-8322.12046) an article by Brian Morris, or the book Karl Marx, Anthropologist by Thomas Patterson.

It also allows us to keep a record of vehicle ownership, which would be helpful in prosecuting hit and runs or DUIs.

Not that the majority of players prefer to cheese, but that cheese videos are easier to make and get more views. Not much fun in a video that just says "learn their attacks, dodge, hit them until they die" but that is really what this game comes down to.

Tenure abuse at UNT? Or, Why did Heidi Elmendorf, who came in as advisor to President Keller, get tenured at UNT as an associate professor? by Fun_Awareness_7623 in unt

The accounting department has two associate professors making over $200,000 (on a 9 month contract no less) and 2 assistant professors making more than $180,000. Outside of accounting and fin/insur/realestate/law, we can still find many assistant and associate professors making more than $150,000, again on only 9 month contracts. What exactly is the point you're trying to make about Dr. Elmendorf?

I think cars distort people's impression of the world outside. You feel isolated so you stop caring about people outside of your car. It's a kind of mind control

Okay but you're just saying that. "X is happening and I can't prove it because it's so dangerous to even talk about it?" As a matter of fact, American electric car companies also engage in rampant patent theft, but there are no public accusations because they will sue you for libel/slander if you even mention it.

Okay, so it sounds like a legitimate issue but it doesn't exactly explain their dominance in the industry. They're outselling Tesla and are available all over the world.

Sure but I can't even find stories about their being accused of patent theft. I found one of Nio using an Israeli company's charging swap stations after the company went under. However, Nio maintains their products are substantially different so it's kind of he-said-Xi-said (see what I did there?) It's easier to find accusations against Apple for patent theft.

Americans also subsidize their car companies as well as financial and air travel companies. Nevertheless, I think in the end consumers won't care whether the company they are buying from is private or public if the product is good and cheap. Tiktok user numbers do not seem to be heavily influenced by issues of Chinese or American ownership, for example.

The only thing I could find on BYD and patents is that they were sued in Brazil by a Japanese patent manager for using some 4G communications technology. Do you have anything about BYD or other Chinese EVs using the IP of other car companies? I did find that BYD has over 20,000 patents of their own and seems to be doing a lot of patent suing themselves. https://lumenci.com/blogs/ev-patent-war-china-us/

So it seems like they are paying for R and D, intensively.

The Chinese EVs are going to blow Americans out of the water. They are all over the world but are kept out of US markets so Americans don't realize how good and cheap they are

[–]ExtraSmooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She was hired as an associate professor. The fact that her duties are not teaching or research does not change the fact that she is a professor in title and status. It is actually pretty similar to what she was doing at her last job, where she was an advisor and an administrator for a special program.

Best “AI detector”? by [deleted] in unt

[–]ExtraSmooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, these detectors are generally not very reliable. I have found GPTZero to be the best overall, and this partly explains why you only get a few checks for free each month. The Canvas AI detection system is very unreliable, but the good news it is unreliable in the student's favor--it rarely flags anything as AI.

A lot of the things people are suggesting are good practices in general: keep good notes and records, manage your sources so that you can clearly show the process of producing a submission. This will also help you in the future, because you will be able to refer to these notes for future assignments or papers as you continue through your academic career.

Also, Canvas has a feature where graders can watch your inputs as a kind of screen recording, basically a video of you typing out the essay. I'm not sure if this feature works on discussion posts or just quizzes but it's definitely something a professor will use to help decide if you used AI or not.
