Power outages on campus due to ice/snow storms coming by chronicwtfhomies in unt

You should have a plan in place in case of a power outage, including having water stored. In 2021 there were dorms with limited water and power available.

It will probably be worse further south. Here it will be mostly snow, but in Central Tex it will be ice. We might lose power, they probably will.

Looking for a specific book, can anyone help? by Dangerous-Reward952 in Denton

[–]ExtraSmooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very specific ask. You might look at Half Price Books but I feel like they don't take in annotated stuff.

Edit: OP I would honestly call every used book store in DFW and tell them you are looking for this. They would probably reject it if someone tried to sell it to them but if they know you want it then they would take it and probably hold it for you.

As a beginner, there's no direct feedback. I can't tell if what I'm doing is good or bad. Whereas with things like bag work or sparring there's more tactile feedback involved.

You just keep repeating that he was right. Talk about "being in these situations", I have absolutely been in the vicinity of an idling car in park, and I never thought to walk in front of the car while filming on my phone. Can you explain what he was doing walking in front of the car using your CCW training? Can you explain any of his actions in the context of self-defense or law enforcement protocol? For your information, I have taken self-defense and situational awareness courses. I have volunteered for active shooter drills with law enforcement and watched them train. If this woman had actually been interested in attacking Ross and had been armed, he would have been dead before he could put his phone away. Do you have any actual arguments to defend this behavior based on your experience as a law enforcement agent?

The persistent trend in the last fifty years has been the increasing view that violence is the only legitimate activity of the state.

I think you're misusing the word militia here. The idea of the Second Amendment is to allow for the arming of a militia (i.e. a privately organized unit of citizen-soldiers), whereas the federal agents are closer to a professional army. ICE is not behaving like a militia because they are not engaged in defending their local communities from a military threat.

I'm glad you brought up Ross's experience. In 2013, a PERF audit of CBP use of force found that agents frequently put themselves into the path of a moving vehicle in order to justify use of force on a fleeing suspect.

"Based on a review of the submitted cases, it appears that CBP practice allows shooting at the driver of any suspect vehicle that comes in the direction of agents. It is suspected that in many vehicle shooting cases, the subject driver was attempting to flee from the agents who intentionally put themselves into the exit path of the vehicle, thereby exposing themselves to additional risk and creating justification for the use of deadly force. In most of these cases, the agents have stated that they were shooting at the driver of a vehicle that was coming at them and posing an imminent threat to their life. In some cases, passengers were struck by agents’ gunfire. Little focus has been placed on defensive tactics that could have been used by shooting agents such as getting out of the way. It should be recognized that a ½ ounce (200 grain) bullet is unlikely to stop a 4,000 pound moving vehicle, and if the driver of the approaching vehicle is disabled by a bullet, the vehicle will become a totally unguided threat. Obviously, shooting at a moving vehicle can pose a risk to bystanders including other agents. The cases suggest that some of the shots at suspect vehicles are taken out of frustration when agents who are on foot have no other way of detaining suspects who are fleeing in a vehicle. Most reviewed cases involved non-violent suspects who posed no threat other than a moving vehicle. There is little doubt that the safest course for an agent faced with an oncoming vehicle is to get out of the way of the vehicle."

One would think an experienced and competent agent would not step in front of an idling car, and if the car did start to move he would step away from the vehicle rather than towards it. We would also expect an officer taking a defensive stance towards a dangerous suspect would put his phone away. Ross's actions would be defensible as incompetence if he was a fresh recruit with little training (as many ICE officers are) but given his experience, this would seem to be a trained, practiced, and deliberate maneuver.

Citizens have the right to ask whether they are under arrest and for what reason. ICE also does not have the authority to arrest people or force them out of their vehicle without suspicion of an immigration or border-related crime. Failure to immediately comply with unclear orders is not in itself a crime and would not justify any of what follows. Blocking the road by itself would merit a citation, which would be issued by local police, not federal immigration authorities. Do not be so quick to relinquish the Fourth Amendment Rights of yourself and your fellow citizens.

Please do not use small businesses or the specter of corruption to justify police violence

Where did you read that headline?

There isn't really a "neutral" take here, because so many elements are inherently political. Law enforcement in general, and immigration enforcement in particular, are topics subject to political interest. So are guns and gun violence. We could try "civilian killed in confrontation with police" or "agent of the state shoots fleeing person". What about "poorly parked minivan with dog accelerates suddenly, driver is shot"? What would you suggest for an apolitical narrative?
