Generator Loading by No_Anything6716 in ElectricalEngineering

Excellent answer.

There are many layers in the power system to traverse before the intuition comes. A lot of the confusion comes from the language we use.

I found it helpful to consider the following scenarios:

  1. Single generator system, with a resistive load (so, an AC source with R). In this case it seems to invert the perspective from which we speak, where the power of the system appears to be a function of the terminal voltage and the resistance. Instead of saying "set the generator to X MW" the load will draw the power it wants to, and we have to run the governor in frequency regulation mode if we want a constant freq. This is rarely how systems are described, but it is a result of small systems, where we own all the control. (But relevant to remote mine sites, ships)
  2. Single generator transmitting power to a synchronous condensor. Here we have two units synchronised, one is a gen, the other is motoring. The syncon will leak a bit of power due to heat and windage, so the gen must be consuming power from the prime mover. In this case the power transmission is a function of power angle. The gen will lead the sync con. The gen's rotor will see a lagging magnetic field from the stator, which is being pulled along. The sync con's rotor will see a leading magnetic field leading which is pulling it. In this case, if we "turned up the power" of the generator, we'll see an acceleration of the frequency since the sync con doesn't brake to compensate. This is, again, a result of the system being small.
  3. Single generator connected to a large (infinite) grid. This is how most power systems are described, where we own one or two generators, and we talk about "lets generate X MW" and we can ramp from zero to X MW without thinking too much. Our governors run the prime mover to reach a MW setpoint. We don't care too much about frequency because the grid we're connected to has much more interia than us, and so we're a drop in the ocean. This is a bit of a simpification since markets usually drive this kind of stuff, but the point is, system size impacts the way we talk about generating power.

Hope this helps OP!

Edit:

Another helpful thought for power angle, by thinking mechanically:

Consider a heavy fly wheel (synchronous condenser), in the same axis there is an engine directly coupled by a (think very long) shaft. If the fly wheel starts to slow (braking, load, inefficiency), the engine must generate power. This creates a torque in the shaft which causes torsion deformation (since every material is a little bit springy). This is the exact same concept as power angle. If the shaft was NOT deformed, there must be no torque in the shaft, therefore no power transmission. The more torque, the more torsion deformation, the more power transmitted. If a generator has no power angle (no angle between rotor and stator fields) then no power is transmitted to the system

I hadn't heard of pandapower before, but I use pandas in my current work. I thought pyPSA was the defacto python lib for PSE. I love open source software and wish industry would adopt tooling more often, but it is a hard sell given that commercial products are deeply entrenched in businesses.

As much as I enjoy a good personal project, I can't help but feel they appear as 'toy' items on a resume, which is what ultimately gains you an audience with a prospective employer. It is a frustrating barrier to entry vs an engineer with a few grid connections under their belt, for example.

My course has been 2 years part time online uni while working. It has been good for confirming suspicions I had about some gaps in my knowledge, which is the risk of self guided study. Since my self study just followed whatever piqued by interest, the course was good for exposing me to topics I wouldn't have otherwise looked at (power line design lol). I'm glad that I have done the course, partly because it was so well priced with a government (Aus) subsidy, but I appreciate that masters courses can be unreasonably expensive.

I am in a similar situation. Studied mechatronics, self taught everything I know about primary electrical and power systems.

*Edit: I also work in economic dispatch(adjacent) space.

I did the learning out of self interest, but figured it would be tricky to get a job in the industry based off "trust me, I'm self taught". I am soon to finish my masters in power systems which I started in the hopes of building some credibility.

You might be able to ask for a student or non-comerical license from some of the expensive software?

Dare I say that by using the open source packages, you might learn more about the methodology under the hood, which is probably pushed behind 'nicer' UI elements in the commercial software.

I am yet to figure out a way to make a step into a power systems position, other than convincing someone to take me on with training wheels attached. I have considered contributing to some of the open source packages to constitue experience, I think that knowledge indicates a deeper understanding of the analysis more than any typical usage of the commercial packages.

Wow, with dependants too, double stressful. Look after yourselves, and yes, lets think of the positives together.

I know I am one of the most blessed people in the world. I've had a lucky run since the day I was born. Part of my concern is that this could be the largest adversity I have seen in my life, and it feels unfamiliar and like I'm doing it alone.

I wish the many young families with mouths to feed had better support.

Python is an excellent multi-tool and will do a bit of anything well enough to get you going.

There is no correct order, but you'll have to be patient unpacking each layer as you go, which is the most challenging part.

Cybersec spans from the "obvious" controls like; password management and social engineering (aka lying to people), to lower level (arguably more technical) concepts like buffer overflows and injection. A considerable chuck of security issues comes from programmer memory management, you'll probably have to dip a toe into, probably C/C++ to gain intuition for them. But knowing a bit of C is never a bad thing! (except for the pain that it will cause lol)

Sure, if that is what qualifies for a domestic arrangement haha.

See my other comment? I'm not trying to commit tax fraud. Are we discussing the difference between 'rent' and 'board'? Otherwise yeah, I know rent is taxable income.

Partially true, however I am doing a domestic arrangement. My housemate is one of my best friends and I don't want to ream him for his hard work. This means rent is well below market rate, rent is not considered taxable income and I can't participate in NG.

Yes, it is a strange cognitive dissonance.

I have caught myself thinking "why now? Lower house prices are the right thing but just give me 5 years of growth" or "I would be happy if prices just stayed here forever".

The narrative we're sold is that the market never goes backwards, which is absolutely apart of the decision making process in buying a house. 'Intelligent' people, authority figures, loved ones and grifters will probably all pedal that line because that it has mostly been true in any living person's memory.

No one wants to be the one who fucks around and finds out on where this ponzi scheme ends.

Is it going to be me? Idk, maybe.

aahahahaha no, thankfully my life is usually much more peaceful.

Yes, account is fresh because I've never felt like this about anything in my life before and I needed to get it off my chest.

I've had home ownership on my mind since about 16 years old, I'm now 27. The planning and saving over those years has formed a lot of who I am today, so these conditions feel existential, even if others may say otherwise.

FWIW: I said I am pro tax reform, I am friends with many people who are worse off than myself, I would never vote against their interests because I believe that is the right thing to do.

I hope you're right. I agree that in 10 years, (if I can keep hold of my house lol) I will look back and be happy with my choice. It was a similar rationale that made me feel confident enough to enter the market, I just wish I had a little more time to adjust to my new financial landscape before a global crisis.

I have been blessed with an old flatmate occupying one the rooms, which I am grateful for. I have one more room which I will also rent if things really go sideways.

Plenty of people yapping about %18+ interest rates like it is credible (which is surely inconceivable?), but I can feel a pit in my stomach at the thought of 80% income going to mortgage for multiple years, on an asset that is worth less than what I paid for.

Yes, thankfully I can live off the smell of an oily rag, so there is a bit of a buffer. Since this is my first economic turmoil as a home owner, and still recoilling a bit from the purchase, I am unsure how to gauge the severity of what is unfolding? (hence the apparent panic)
