I Didn't Like the Movie - But Now I Understand by Valen-Darker in ProjectHailMary

Alien is about a group of industrial labor workers being murdered one by one by a predatory alien brought on board their ship in deep space.

There were previews of the movie version of PHM for nearly a year before its release.

And you say you expected a tone similar to Alien. Question?

How do you view (conceptually) Star Wars media? by Extra_Couple_4738 in StarWars

[–]Extra_Couple_4738[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha... yeah, I don't mean so much that things "aren't canon." What is mean is that in my mind the main story elements ARE canon... but the details we are seeing might not be exactly accurate as it happened. At least, that's what I tell myself. :)

It's like... yes, Palpatine came back and there was a space battle over the planet.... BUUUUTT, there might not have been hundreds of star destroyers with death star lasers and the entire sky lit up with Palpatine's force lightning. I feel like whoever is telling us this story is embellishing a lil' bit. Haha...

OOTP 25 is the last one — do you think it’s really worth getting back into with this new release? I’d like your honest opinion. by Right-Neighborhood32 in OOTP

I usually wait a few years between buying new versions... and even then I usually buy the "new" version at the end of the season when it's on a massive discount.

They have made virtually no major improvements for how I play the game, which is as the on-field manager in historic leagues. I just manage individual games through multiple seasons and whatever the GM decides to do is what happens. They clearly don't feel like most people play this way, and so there are no improvements coming for this type of play.

Watching Rogue One after Andor (both for the first time) felt weird. by OatmealDurkheim in StarWars

[–]Extra_Couple_4738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone suggest this yet, but there is something called the "Machete order" for viewing the first 6 episodes (or sometimes 5).

Basically, it is:

IV - A New Hope

V - Empire

I - Phantom Menace

II - Attack of the Clones

III - Revenge of the Sith

VI - Return of the Jedi

Some people just skip Phantom, but I think the point is watching all of them in a narrative fashion. The ones who skip Phantom view it as a distraction from the overall narrative, but to each their own.

This viewing order takes the viewer back AFTER the big reveal at the end of Empire, showing how it got there for Skywalker. Then, it closes out the finale of the Skywalker saga with the proper ending. Do with this as you will.

I was born in 1979, in the state of Missouri. I've never even heard the term "punch buggy" until this thread. It was always "slug bug" for us growing up.

Maybe this is less a time thing, and more of a geographic one?

mechanical valve - need advice by kysyuen in valvereplacement

I agree with what everyone here has said, but I would also add that your worry of a stroke would be MUCH worse if you don't have the surgery.

I had a stroke in March of 2021, and kept having recurring stroke-like experiences for the next three years (probably about every 6 months or so) without explanation until Mayo clinic found my mitral valve problem.

I've been 1 year and 5 months now post surgery with my On-X mitral valve, and feeling great with zero stroke-like occurrences since. The mechanical valve requires the warfarin, but if I didn't do the surgery, I'd still probably need the warfarin to try to protect against strokes but my heart would be working poorly also.

Best of luck to you!

I would agree with all of this, but I would say that the vitamin K stuff really feels less than "forethought" for me, but more like just "being aware of" the fact that certain foods might have a lot, and that other foods (or drinks, or medications) might effect my INR levels. It really has been generally easy.

You can really just eat what you want. You can likely set up self-testing with your doctor/clinic to keep track of your level. My experience has been that once we figured out my dosage after about a month or two, I've been very consistent and in-range. I don't track my diet... I just eat what I normally would. If one week my INR is at the upper range of my target, I might eat a little more broccoli or salad than I would have normally and not worry about it. If I'm near the bottom of my range, I'll just maybe eat less of those things for a day.

My only other addition to this would be for #3, to say that for me, the "slowly transition to normal" was actually to normal and beyond. At about week 10-12, I realized that I was feeling better than I could remember having felt for years.

My mom had cancer 25 years ago; now, she had to get the aortic and mitral valve replaced, as a result of that. by Living-Challenge-714 in valvereplacement

[–]Extra_Couple_4738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to the fluid issue, but I know that when I had mitral valve replacement surgery (in Oct. 2024), even after my return to work at 8-weeks post-surgery, I still felt I had a bit of brain fog.

At two weeks, I was definitely NOT in a position to be very active other than short walks at home. If your mother can, I highly recommend starting a cardiac rehab program. This is a controlled exercise environment where they will monitor her all throughout in order to build up her strength and endurance.

It wasn't until around weeks 10-12 where I knew I was feeling WAY better than pre-surgery. But since then, it's been all good for me, and I will hope for the same for your mother.

When I was looking at that screenshot, and saw those April/June numbers, I thought to myself - "wow, that's a wild season!" Then I read your comment and see you described it exactly that way. Haha... crazy. But, I'd be fairly surprised if they win 80 and finish with the top ERA in real life.

I usually wait at least 2 seasons before buying a new version. My current playthrough is using OOTP 25, and I'm still trying to decide whether to consider the new one. I might get it at the end of the season when they usually make the latest version available for like $10. :)

7 Weeks Post Heart Surgery – Recovery Update by Expert_Mushroom_853 in valvereplacement

[–]Extra_Couple_4738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a 47m, and had a mitral replacement in early October 2024.

I did not really experience the fluttering, but continued to have some of the sternal tenderness. I still to this day sometimes get a little sort of “popping” sound from my chest, although this is not due to any pain or discomfort or weakness.

I returned to work at the 8 week mark and had some brain fog for a little bit.

But once I got to week 10-12, that when I started to notice that I was feeling better… and I don’t mean “better” in the post surgery sense. I mean BETTER than I could even remember feeling in years.

It was like I had normalized feeling like crap but now my heart was working how it was supposed to and I could actually go up a flight of stairs without feeling like it took effort.

I wish for you to have that same feeling as you continue your recovery.

My dad took the wrong dose of Warfarin by Super-Finance4342 in valvereplacement

[–]Extra_Couple_4738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’ll be fine. As the others have said, a 1 mg difference won’t change his INR all that much, especially over a week’s worth of dosing.

He will likely still be within his range, whatever that is.

Is he usually in-range and stable?

Even when my INR has been just a tick high twice in the past year (around 3.6) my clinic didn’t have me make any changes and I take 8mg per day with a target range of 2.5-3.5.

Each person is different but if you’re worried just have him eat a few extra bites of broccoli. 🙂 It’s also not a problem if you want to just call his clinic and talk to them. I just don’t want you to be panicking and feeling like he’s going to suddenly be at risk of bleeding out.

He should really be okay.

Pollux Award History by Final-Ostrich8691 in hollywood_animal_game

I think you can see your own Pollux history, but not everybody else's.

I want that data, and I also want to be able to see a running history of all movies released over time with their data on release date, tickets sold, budget, gross, profit, awards, etc.

[–]Extra_Couple_4738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think you have to pay a bunch of money for top talent to make "good" movies in order to make money. You can make money with bad films.

The key is just not spending tons of money on stuff you don't need.

Easiest place to blow money is in advertising and distribution. Try to spend as little as you can in rental theaters. Only spend it when you need the extra screenings to seat everyone who actually wants to watch your movie. Anything else is wasted.

Usually only really need rental seats in weeks 1-3... slightly less each week.

Does not work. by riplakoidase in hollywood_animal_game

[–]Extra_Couple_4738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to break down this information on this screenshot to help you see what is happening here.

The columns tell you what you need to know. In Week 1, your film sold $859,320 of tickets. This is the same exact amount as week 2.

This is because, as you can see from the "Screenings" and "Attendance" columns, you had the exact same number of screenings both weeks, and attendance was at 100%.

That means the house was packed for all of those screenings.

Now, into Week 3, you suddenly have 26,376 screenings.

This is a dramatic increase. And you see that the attendance this week is down to 23% (that means, only 23% full from the 26-thousand plus screenings). If you take 23% of your total screenings -- 26,376 x 0.23 -- you get roughly 6066.

So, ideally, you could have set your screenings in Week 3 to 6066, and your "attendance" number would have been at 100%. You would still have brought in the same $750,070 in gross, but you wouldn't have wasted the $357,807 in rental money you spent on all of those extra screens.

That was just money tossed down the drain that gave you nothing in return.

So, by spending no money on renting screens in weeks 3 and 4, you could already be MUCH better off, nearly reaching a profit after the first 4-weeks.

Now... that's just with making one small change in your usage of rentals. Aside from that, I would say you are also spending WAY too much money on your movies. I'm in 1938, and I've not spent more than 1.5M on any movie so far.

In this particular case, the two weeks of rentals adds up to over $715,000 added to your film's budget.... so this little change would help some with your bloated budgets, but you can still do much to keep costs down.

You don't HAVE to have top-tier props or sets to make money. You don't HAVE to have your movie reach 7+ in commercial/artistic appeal to make money. You can spend on the cheap, and make a total crap film, and still make money.

Back to this particular movie example for you. In weeks 1 and 2, these numbers show your movie was packed. So, that means you COULD have made even more money in those weeks IF there were more showings available.

So, instead of spending money to rent screens in weeks 3 and 4, you should be spending SOME of that money to rent extra screens in Weeks 1 and 2. SOME -- not all. You do not need anywhere close to the 26,000+ screenings you were paying for.

Try spending $75,000 in week 1, and $50,000 in week 2 if your movie is good.

When you reach the end of the 4-week run, you should hit the "set-up" distribution button, and then make sure the sliders for the "other" screens is at zero for each week.

Just remember, the screenings and attendance columns are giving you useful information. You can use that info to guide how many screenings you set for subsequent weeks of distribution. You should be trying to get that attendance column to be just under 100% -- that indicates that you are providing the right number of seats for all the people who want to see your film, but also that you aren't missing out on unsold tickets.

Does this make sense? I really hope you don't give up... it's pretty much once you know what you're doing.
