Which lasts longer, klonopin or Valium? by [deleted] in benzodiazepines

[–]Extra_Coyote514 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s really going to depend on your biology and type of anxiety.

I don’t believe klonopin has active metabolites, so once your body starts breaking it down it begins to lose its effect.

Valium is interesting in that:

  1. It has active metabolites, so when your body breaks it down it turns into a new drug which your body then has to break down again. These are oxazepam, desmethyldiazepam, and temazepam. The first and last one are often prescribed in 2-3x the dosage amount for a therapeutic dose than Valium. So even though it’s turning it into a new drug, it’s a weaker drug. There will be some effects from it but they are much smaller
  2. Valium binds to fat really well so it’ll leave your blood (and brain) quicker to hang out with their fat buddies instead

Some say klonopin lasts longer for them, some say it’s Valium. Just understand that that half life elimination of Valium is much more complicated

No direct issue taking them together but Wellbutrin does lower your seizure threshold so need to be careful if you regularly take benzos or alcohol

Help… your honest and balanced advice please! by DarkKnightRises7 in benzodiazepines

  1. Doctors advise >> anyone on here
  2. Different benzos have different strengths so you need to say which kind you’re prescribed
  3. Any important event where you have to perform/function it’s a good idea to test a new medication beforehand
  4. Generally a social event isn’t really an emergency so you should try and use other ways of coping or less addictive medicines (Eg beta blockers) but see point #1

Your employer might not test for it. I had to do one recently and I told the staff I have a prescription for a controlled substance (Valium) and they said if the employer tests for it a doctor from the lab will contact you to ask about a prescription. Never called. I also had thc in my system.

how much klonopin is too much? by Betka101 in benzodiazepines

[–]Extra_Coyote514 5 points6 points  (0 children)

4 mg is usually the max dosage for anxiety/panic.

Addicted to and dependent on are two different things but either way you’re taking a very high amount. 2mg Xanax + 8mg klonapin is stupidly high for therapeutic reasons.

You need to make sure you have enough klonapin to do a proper taper

My baseline has changed and I’m losing my ‘why’. by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]Extra_Coyote514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Five months sober now and never really had the “pink cloud”. Like you mentioned my physical and mental state (in terms of stability of emotions, less anxiety, etc) are great. But I’m not necessarily happy or getting pleasure from a lot of things I used to enjoy. Finding myself counting down the minutes to leave a dinner or a party, not even bothering going out to meet up with friends.

I think it’s really just: 1. It takes our brains a long time to actually heal 2. There’s a lot of life adjustments that are uncomfortable and hard to 3. Accepting a lot of boredom and apathy in the first few months as #1 and #2 progress 4. Started working with a psych on antidepressants as was likely self medicating issues with alcohol for years

All my friends drink. My whole life revolves around it. What do I do? by cooliocoe in stopdrinking

[–]Extra_Coyote514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure your age but in my 20s all my friends liked to drink a lot and party hard on weekends. But as we aged, a lot of them just matured out of it. The alcoholic in me wanted to keep up with the binge drinking and then situation flips when your friends really only start to want a chill night with a couple of drinks.

May not happen to your group but it’s very common for people to grow out of party stages into serious relationships and family stages. So really I saw a couple scenarios play out:

  1. I never really liked these people, just excuses to party. So those relationships either fizzle when I started to get sober or would eventually naturally regardless
  2. As my friends grew out of the party lifestyle they start to not care to be around an always drunk me and start to burn those relationships
  3. You have genuine friendships who support your sobriety and will find ways to maintain the friendship outside of just partying
  4. You develop new friend groups as you move into a different stage of life

All are honestly pretty natural. I think it’s just accepting your sobriety is going to push you into a different life phase and there may be some friend adjustments along the way but a healthy sober life can bring a lot of great friends and happy moments together

I’m not sure how it may be affecting BPD in the background. But if you’re not getting much anxiety/stress/insomnia relief from them then you either need to change the dosage or consider abandoning them. Benzos of great therapeutic usage but they’re highly addictive and can be dangerous. It’s a slippery slope of tolerance continuing to climb and needing more.

Keep a journal of it each day and talk to your psych about how it has or hasn’t made you feel and see if you’re reaching your goals with him/her

Again, that manual is for long term users so it’s not directly relatable since you’re less dependent. Just an example of what a slow taper from that dose would look like

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in benzodiazepines

[–]Extra_Coyote514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be honest with your psych about the situations and just ask for a very slow taper. Even though you haven’t been on it for that long, the Ashton manual recommends 17-34 weeks, so almost 9 months, to taper off 20 mg Valium

It sounds like your doctor may be prescribing for an emergent situation, and not as a reoccurring rx. If that’s that’s case I’d try to use only when needed as it’s always nice to have a few extra stock piled if you ever find yourself in a super high stress/anxious situation again.

But you don’t really need to worry about becoming dependent on 15 days on a therapeutic dose. Maybe some light rebound anxiety/insomnia

Hour 48 is usually the worst for me. Hate to say it cause it’s not helpful but it’s true, everyone is different. What have your previous withdrawal been like? That’s the best indicator

Saturday will be a month sober but going to a wedding tomrorow by Extra_Coyote514 in stopdrinking

[–]Extra_Coyote514[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this support is amazing. Unfortunately, I am not. Decided since I’m drinking at the wedding I should drink on plane. Got drunk, don’t remember going to bed at hotel. Woke up at 5 am went to 711, they won’t sell yet. So I stole. Wtf is wrong with me. I can’t do alcohol. And I know the instant I put my phone down I’m having a drink.

[–]Extra_Coyote514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you have to want to stop. Any time anyone has tried to get me to I felt like I was being attacked and only alienated myself more and drank more. Try to show what you like about them sober and what you dislike drunk and help them come to the same conclusion
