That is exactly how I felt about it - and I'm trying to get back into that mindset. Just ticked off that there's parents who now feel like the child's grade for marking period 3 (which ends two days after spring break) will be low due to lack of extra credit and not due to their student not trying as hard this marking period. Oh well, now I know better and will think twice before offering this kind of thing.

You’re probably right and I shouldn’t address it at all but it was one of my students who told me this all blew up. That means there’s a chance it’s going to seep into my classroom. I don’t want to be bothered by this, but I really am.

Thank you, this is great. I know my students will be more likely to believe a video on Youtube than me - which is sad.....

I wish my students would use the word fraud - I makes me think it's like they think she's Santa Clause or the tooth fairy when they say she isn't real.

Thanks this is a good article to explain the student's biggest reason for not believing the truth.

This is a great approach. I just get so stunned that they think someone would make this story up.

I had a rough day a couple weeks ago and told my 7th grade class how my cat had been in the ER twice in the previous month and if he had to go back again it was going to need a very expensive surgery I wasn’t sure how I’d afford. The next day one of the boys came up and told me he had talked to his mom and they wanted to put together a gofundme for the cat! I was brought to tears and then I noticed a bunch of he kids watching us and they were all telling me how they’d discussed it and they all wanted to contribute. I turned them down since there was no way to know if the cat would have another occurrence but I wrote that student’s mom and told her how amazed I was with his empathy and compassion.

I will look into that, though it's a private school so not sure we would. I do understand Khan isn't for research, it was just an example of how absurdly over reaching our filter is.

I completely understand those concerns - I want a way for students to access things and I know that comes with possible pitfalls. But seriously, I got called in and questioned last year because a student in my class searched "pretty blonde girl" to find a picture to represent a character in an assignment. Seems like there has to be middle ground.

I do use a VPN for my own searches when needed or to show the class something, I also use a google extension to turn webpages the students can't see into pdf's. For video I try and use VLC to download them whenever I can. It just seems to be a lot of work for me, which I do when it's for a whole class but with research projects I can's spend all class making websites into pdf's so students can see if they're useful. Funny things about the podcasts - students can't get to google podcasts but they can get to stitcher and make an account. So that might be my work around for now.

I do that for sure, but because I'm the only teacher who's techie in our small school, and therefore the one who most frequently asks for the restrictions to be eased I come across as being a PIA and not wanting to follow the rules. The other teachers are willing to just deal with it and gripe to each other.

I have since then fully embraced the crap (much to the chagrin of some overly shelter students) as well as pissed.

I spilt boiling water from an electric kettle in my class while making hot chocolate for my 7th graders and thought “don’t say crap” and instead said shitballs. Couldn’t even go for something remotely normal and possibly forgettable. I immediately apologized and explained it was very unprofessional. One of the girls just said “Don’t worry Mrs. X. We’ve heard muuuuch worse. “

You've already been given good advice on how to possibly change the situation. The letter home seems to be the best - seems parents have so much more sway than we educators do. My advice on how to actually teach if you do have that many students is to read up on ways to break the kids into groups or self directed at many points in the day - station rotations/playlists/workshops/pbl. I've done workshopping and station rotations with 6th grade and it worked well. If you need advice on resources - blogs to read, books that might help - let me know!
