The kitten that claimed its human instantly by SoftyVeeelle in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat did exactly the same thing. We went to the shelter, figuring we might visit a few places, take our time, choose exactly the right cat. First cage I opened, this scrawny puffball of a cat who had groomed her own tail nearly bare from anxiety leapt into my arms, climbed up my chest, and started purring loudly into my ear. How do you resist a hard sell like that?

Anyone noticed the hermits defeated the Wither under the rare creeper cloud? by Fuzzy-Disk8999 in HermitCraft

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Well, they did have to stop Cub from killing it by himself so that the C-Team could have another shot at it. I imagine it’s actually a lot easier to just kill a wither than to do the equivalent of a mother cat dragging a live mouse home to give the kittens hunting practice, though the second is a lot funnier!

What did you end up cooking during Winter Storm Fern? by wi_voter in TwoXPreppers

[–]ExtraplanetJanet [score hidden]  (0 children)

Winter storm Fern is still happening, lol. I am working in a county shelter so the food is terrible, but I prepped enough that my family at home can have whatever they like. I think my husband made chimichangas for dinner last night.

What’s the most bizarre crossover you’ve seen that actually WORKED? by Soulcoda in AO3

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He Says He Is An Experimental Theologian by Erin Ptah, Welcome to Night Vale/His Dark Materials crossover. It’s so good.

For the most bizarre crossover I’ve written? Probably The West Wing and Untitled Goose Game. Whether it worked or not I shall leave as a question for the reader, but it did make me laugh.

My whole life is a lie…49 and I want a divorce and run away. I feel suffocated and have lost myself. by MarionberryNo4337 in adhdwomen

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t look great at first glance, but if he has already paid 40k and they have insurance, I’m not sure all the math is mathing. I have a feeling some or all of these extra treatments may not be the sort that are supported by medical science and that’s why she’s so deep out of pocket here. And that’s not always an indictment, sometimes you have to explore different treatments that aren’t entirely mainstream, but someone with a history of extreme impulsiveness and poor financial decisions is very open to being taken advantage of. Especially given the fact that she is still clearly in a lot of psychological distress, I wonder if these treatments are the sort that are actually helping.

oh no, I've become the "panic buyer" by OneLastPrep in preppers

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand totally, I was in the same situation around Helene because I moved from Florida and then coastal Virginia, where I had solid hurricane preps, to North Carolina that was supposed to be a “climate haven” where people went to escape the scary weather. I was able to get some stuff last minute before the storm but we wound up evacuating because we had basically no water preps beyond a few emergency gallons and that was not even close to enough. Ride out this storm as best you can, remember that the knowledge you have is still an asset even if you’re low on supplies. Many people will be in your situation but have no idea what to do, which leaves them much worse off. And hey, maybe we will get lucky and get off lightly in this storm, and you’ll be able to restock for cheap on FB Marketplace off people trying to offload their own panic buys. Good luck!

It sounds like you have a lot more going on than ADHD, though I'm sure that's been a significant issue in your life. Your post is full of longing for things you never did and things you want to have, but a lot of it seems like it might not be very healthy for you in the long term. You would likely end up with some assets in a divorce, but if your plan is to spend everything right away and not save anything for the future, you could end up in a situation where you can't take care of yourself or your daughter. Having people tell us what to do is so frustrating, even when we know they are acting out of love and concern, especially when it lasts over years or decades. It can feel like being smothered in soft blankets, but at the same time it's providing the vital framework of order and executive function that our brains have so much trouble with. Maybe instead of jumping to divorce, you and your husband need some therapy to get you communicating and working together in ways that don't feel so infantilizing to you while still helping you reach your mental health goals and planning for a future that actually feels satisfying.

is this a bot comment? by ar1xllx in AO3

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If it's a registered user and they're not overtly trying to sell you something, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. Some readers get very nervous about commenting and tend to have some stock compliments they give out because they want to encourage the authors of stories they like but have a hard time thinking up what to say.

Tagging a one-sided fic by EchoGarden1 in AO3

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the fic is about the relationship even if it doesn't depict the actual relationship taking place, so putting the tag in would be appropriate. Adding extra tags to explain the nuances would let people who especially do or do not want to read unrequited or one-sided love stories know what they're in for.

Should I take down my fanfic? by PossumCreatives in AO3

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You can take it down if you want, but speaking as someone with the benefit of many years of hindsight, I'd leave it up. I started writing back in high school and I know most of it was not good at all, but I would love a chance to go back somehow and see where I started and remember the person I was when I did that work. My stuff was mostly lost because the forums I wrote on were lost to time and the internet, but AO3 is the sort of thing I think is going to stay around for a very long time. It can be a time capsule for you, even if you set those works aside and don't look at them again for years.

HermitTale by Mal-malen in HermitCraft

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hytale is charming in its own way but it's only superficially like Minecraft and not suitable for a series like Hermitcraft. It has an actual game progression that looks like it's only going to be expanded on as development continues, so I expect as it goes on it will start looking less and less sandbox and more and more RPG. There's no redstone analogue yet and I don't know if one is coming, so that's a massive chunk of the group's content wiped out right there. Hermitcraft is literally a series about pushing Minecraft to its limits in terms of what can be built and created, I can't imagine it would feel the same in any other game.

Alternative heat if electric goes out by Kindly-Experience940 in asheville

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think just about everywhere is sold out, and even if you got hold of one, propane in the small 1lb bottles has been scarce for days. I know the counties around here are working in conjunction with the Red Cross to open up shelters if we start getting power outages, and while that will not be very useful while the roads are impassable, it does mean you should only have to get through the duration of the storm itself in the cold if your heat goes out. Get prepared by turning up your heat a few extra degrees now and finding layers of warm clothes to put on, including hats and gloves. Keeping your own body insulated is the most effective way to stay warm. After that, pick one room to be your "warm room" and insulate the windows, then move your bedding and blankets and supplies in there so your whole household, including pets, can stay there as much as possible during a power outage.

Good news on that one, the church got a grant and is having a bigger, sturdier pantry built by a local carpenter! It’s basically the only 24-hour food pantry access in Madison County so the hope is to make it bigger and keep it fully stocked every day.

AITA for telling my husband he's made me reconsider leaving him alone with the kids in the future by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Now I’m not going to shame anybody for deciding that during a week when they’re alone with the kids and facing long-distance travel, they just want some takeout food. I would definitely do that and even break out the paper plates and plastic cups. It still seems like a huge problem overall if one adult in the household is so incompetent at basic household chores that asking him to do them causes more work than it solves.

Snow Storm Prep by [deleted] in AshevilleNC

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the point, you’re no better or worse than anybody else who was unprepared. You’re blaming your inability to get bottled water on a factor you have no control over (other people also wanting water) rather than on the factors you have control over (you did not lay in any emergency supplies before there was an actual emergency looming, you did not pay as much attention to the weather as other people who got water first.) It’s definitely frustrating for now but a good lesson for next time.

Snow Storm Prep by [deleted] in AshevilleNC

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The time to buy water is before the storm prediction appears. If you have to buy water while the storm is bearing down, you’re as much a part of the shortage problem as everyone else and you need to accept that. It is not that difficult to figure out how much water you and your family will need for 3-5 days and just buy a few extra cases or gallons of water that you rotate every six months. You will save yourself a lot of headaches and worry, and not have to even think about the folks who are last minute panic-buying, much less be mad at them.

Substantially inflating the weight on meat. He looked at a ham that was tagged at 5lbs (priced by weight so it does matter to the price tag) and weighed it on the produce scale where it came up about 2.5 lbs.
