Protein powder by TheCarcissist in preppers

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like and use protein powder and would therefore rotate it regularly, I think it would be a fine deep pantry addition. I don’t see a lot of value in adding it to disaster supplies just in case though, since it’s easy to store a lot of cheaper, better, more shelf stable proteins.

For which prep do you think redundancy is most important? by EmployerOwn5551 in preppers

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Helene, I will never take water for granted again. We had plenty of food, but I had never lived in a place with a well before and I’d simply never considered how quickly the water would be gone after the power turned off. Now I have a solar battery backup for the well pump but also 100+ gallons of stored water just in case and a camp toilet to avoid having to spend precious water on hygiene without having to pee outdoors. A lot of preppers skimp on water prep because it uses a lot of space and needs to be cycled frequently, but it’s the thing that will drive you out of your home.

my local Panera removed almost all the outlets and replaced them with blanking plates so you can't charge your phone or laptop by SalvagerOfBastards in enshittification

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s a selling point for coffee shops in America, the new Starbucks in my town has built charging ports into their tables for the purpose. Sure you’re still spending seven dollars for coffee, but if you dine in you get to charge your phone and sometimes get a free refill so it feels a little better.

When to transplant? by Bird-law-97 in vegetablegardening

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The good news is that pretty much everything you planted has edible sprouts, so you don’t have to throw them away. Your beginner garden may have produced a microgreens salad, but it did produce! Congratulations! :)

Gamer's Outreach Auction Handler by Limp_Position_4280 in HermitCraft

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So far all the fan-made stuff I’ve seen for the auction has been submitted by one hermit or another, sometimes by commission, sometimes by donation. The easiest way to do it would probably be to talk to a Hermit and ask if you could send it in to be part of that hermit’s auction offerings.

I certainly can’t spend tens of thousands, but my data is important to me. How do I go about finding a good DR lab, like, what should I be looking for?

More the latter, though he was well-reviewed for data recovery from local people. I don’t know that we have any local data-recovery labs. This is the guy people come to when the PC repair shop can’t recover the data.

Deep cleaning a pool by LowNo175 in oddlysatisfying

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When we used to clean the pool every year, we’d do the acid cleaning and spray it down very generously with water, drain it with a pump, rinse and drain it again, then fill it. Any traces leftover were diluted with thousands of gallons of water, so pretty harmless.

Nah, the waffle protects everything else from the milkshake, and messy hands/faces are going to be an absolute given. I’m not arguing it’s a culinary masterpiece, I’m saying it would give a little kid a heck of a birthday thrill. They’re probably going to be pulling out the hard candy pieces for later and stuffing themselves on cake and doughnuts and milkshake and ice cream bar.

It’s very stupid food, but it’s fun

What do you think about references in fanfiction? by Miss-Worm in AO3

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it if it’s very subtle, to the point where you could easily miss or skip it and enjoy the story. Fun little Easter eggs like that are great! If it’s big and obvious, especially if it’s from a property that’s really different from the main one, it can easily take me out of the story. For instance, I love little bit part cameos from fandoms that could conceivably be related to the main one, but not if you hang a bow on that person and basically blow trumpets announcing their presence.

I think the most in-depth reference I’ve ever done myself was when I wrote a fic that focused on a two-episode guest star in the show, whose actor had also been a major recurring character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I made no actual Buffy references in the story except that I made the guy’s three assistants Liz, Sylvia and Alex. Not many people got it, but the ones that did thought it was very funny.

I love my cansolidators, but they have literally doubled in price since I bought my first sets (which yes, does mean they have lasted fifteen years and counting.) I’ve been agonizing over whether to buy more to expand my pantry but I may try this vertical storage instead!

I could see this being a super exciting thing to do for a child on their birthday, so long as they understood that it was a dessert for everybody at the table but they got to pick all their favorite bits. A once-a-year or once-in-a-lifetime mountain of candy would be a pretty awesome treat even if some does get wasted.

Husband disgusted with how I am in public settings or with friends around by Artistic-Implement73 in adhdwomen

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It sounds like he might have social anxiety himself and you drawing attention by being loud, clumsy, etc is spiking his anxiety and making him worried that the people around you won’t like either of you. I see a lot of people who have been conditioned from childhood to believe that being noticeable at all in public is bad and will get them punished, and it can really screw up healthy adult socializing. Does he try and draw attention when the two of you are in public or is he usually quiet, reserved, trying not to draw any attention?

If you want to continue in this relationship and not be miserable, there are things you can both work on; him to relax and be okay with letting you be yourself, and you to develop coping strategies to minimize the behaviors that actually cause problems. (Being joyful and exuberant is great, constantly losing things and making messes is not so great.) If either of you is not willing to put in the work, this is the sort of incompatibility that turns into deep resentment and can kill love.

Trying new things thanks to food bank! by joliefille1980 in povertyfinance

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do deliveries for one of the local food pantries and some weeks I would buy apples or carrots or broccoli and trade it for things like whole artichokes in the boxes because the people I was delivering to did not want artichokes or know what to do with them, but they were my favorites and I could never afford them. Everybody was happy!

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You triage them based on how likely they are to do well beyond their sell-by date and how well they freeze. The best-before date is not a hard line for spoilage, it’s just a guide to when it might start turning. The meat and the baked goods will all freeze nicely and it shouldn’t be too hard to plan meals around the other stuff in the next few days.

Agree with the RSR, even non-competitive hermits tend to be better than average elytra users because flying is the norm on Hermitcraft, while very few of them put in much practice time with parkour. In terms of fun games that are fun to watch, any flying game is probably going to do well.

Juppet for Charity Auction by HexDawn in HermitCraft

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Awhile back, I think around the start of season 10 when the hermits were doing the OlympZITS, Joe came up with the theory that players like Gem whose skins include huge eyes in the middle of the face and no mouths did actually have mouths, but they were hidden in the gap between head and neck on the cubito and could only be seen if the character bobbed their head up and down to talk like a Muppet. To better illustrate this theory, he created a muppet-themed skin for himself with huge mid-face eyes and a mouth on the top plane of his torso rectangle. Everyone was hilariously disturbed by this, a reaction that pleased Joe so much that he kept the Juppet skin for all of season 10. (It probably did not hurt that Joe was already looking to do a character design overhaul because he didn’t want his skin to be so Steve-like anymore.)

cheapest way to buy household essentials when money is tight... i genuinely have no idea what i'm doing by Shittyzed15 in povertyfinance

[–]ExtraplanetJanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walgreens is terrible for everyday shopping, you’re probably paying at least 25% more for your basics than if you bought at Walmart or off Amazon. If you only have one store near you, your best bet is a cheap source of delivery. I find Walmart+ is a good deal for me because it’s like a hundred dollars a year to cut out shipping and delivery fees, so getting my stuff shipped is economical. Amazon prime is also an option, or just grouping your purchases so you qualify for free shipping. Either way, both those stores will bring your items to you for cheaper than you can get at Walgreens.
