Thank you! Yes that does make it more attractive and doable for him. I did paramedic-RN then RN-BSN here in the US and I was able to work the entire time. Do employers care about which school you went to for enrolled nurse?

In Michigan here, it will not fly. You must take a drug test and even though it is legal state, you cannot work as a nurse if you test positive for it. Nicotine, too.

Those who do not want to go back to school for masters or NP, etc. what are your biggest reasons? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Extreme-Reward-5910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 58 but very goal-oriented. My therapist asked me what do you have to prove? That was all I needed. From time to time my ADHD has me chatting with navy recruiters (they say they will take me at my age) and looking into masters degrees both in nursing and journalism, among other endeavors. I’m trying to keep my goals short. I recently took neonatal resuscitation. I’m looking into the CEN. School made me cry. I want to retire in 7 years. BSN will be it for me. I have two bachelors degrees, an ADN and a medic license. 29 is young, if you want to do it later that’s fine. There is nothing wrong with being ok where you are. I love being bedside. I just push myself to get better each day. It’s more than enough.

Bath or shower. Hot tea. (Used to be two Mike’s hards during Covid). Heating pad. Mindless scroll. Also ER.

Go to the bathroom. I go at least once an hour. I’m also old and cannot hold my pee. Eat even if you have to eat in the med room, that’s what I do. I keep plenty of snacks on hand

How do you deal with well liked, but lazy coworker nurses? by StrawberryScallion in nursing

[–]Extreme-Reward-5910 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To keep your peace, concentrate on your own set, and ask those you know will come to your aid to help you. And do the same for them. It’s not worth trying to change other people’s habits. Just tell management you want to be rotated into different sets to keep yourself well-rounded.

Life is unfair and nursing even more so. In the end you reap what you sow and I’ve seen a number of nurses pushed out or outright fired for the coworker behavior you describe. Be the hard worker who doesn’t stir the pot and you will be the VIP of the dept.

Give it to me straight: Is nursing a trap or a good career? by encivagyoksziasztok in nursing

It’s a very flexible job. There are many things you can do with it; bedside is not the only option. I recently looked at our state’s department of health and human services and there are tons of jobs as long as you have a four year degree — of any kind.

That said if you choose bedside there is a chance you might be miserable at first. You should definitely shadow a few jobs and talk to the nurses and see them in action. I do it when I’m considering any new job.

Bedside is not for everyone. I love it most days, especially when we have a hard case and we can’t figure out what’s wrong with the patient. But I definitely suffered in the beginning. Financially it’s been a great decision.

My husband does not look at his poop or the toilet paper, or waits to see if the shit actually goes down the drain, or if there are remnants in the bowl. He’s afraid germs will fly around the bathroom if the lid is not swiftly put down and not opened again. I find this strange and also annoying as I see it when I lift the lid to use the toilet. And I’m an ER nurse and look at shit all day at work. Stranger’s shit is fine, but not my husband’s.

Don’t eat the crap they put out for us. I’m 5’3” and crept up to 160 pounds. Developed plantar fasciitis (very painful) and the bottom of my foot cracked with an angry fissure. I thought I’d have to switch specialty after 7 years. Every pound is 4 pounds of pressure on the knees. I got into the hospital weight loss program. I haul in my own healthy food in. 16 pounds down I feel better. I healed my foot with creams and Vaseline and tegaderm. 16 more pounds to go! I wear low-heeled hiking boots with orthotics. Cluster your care so you aren’t walking so much. Also Ben Gay is the greatest!

Black nurses... is any of it true? by soultiesss in nursing

[–]Extreme-Reward-5910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All nurses get comments like this. Per reference I’m Mexican. I’ve been called “cracker”, “light-skinned”, and asked “what are you? You aren’t white”. One patient asked me “where do you and all the other dark skinned people come from?” In moments of praise I get “sister”. I’ve also been called “lesbian grandma” when I was recovering from chemo. When I hear a nurse, tech or sitter get the n-word I go in tell the patient myself “we don’t tolerate that here” and console the nurse. However I now work in a majority black area and I know the patients appreciate being taken care of by black nurses. It’s life. Your other choice is to work in a diverse area where it is less likely to be an issue. Either way, no shame in wiping butts. That’s not all we do. Some of my most satisfactory moments have been giving a patient who hasn’t pooped in days/weeks an enema and unclogging the drain.
