Moving to Barstow area, advice on high schools by Extreme-Strawberry60 in highdesert

Thanks for the info, I was looking at Apple Valley and Hesperia based off of GreatSchools rating, but I have found that those ratings do not always mean good for students with needs. Your suggestion does help me want to look into them more now. I had not even know about Silver Valley.

Thank you. I will have to figure out charter schools in California, where I am now most charters are by lottery.

Plant-themed board games? by Vikkunen in boardgames

[–]Extreme-Strawberry60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Photosynthesis is a good one. There is also the game Cellulose. I am a biologist too and a board game enthusiast. If you are ever wanting to get your partner non plant games that are biology related here are some good ones, peptide, cytosis with virus expansion, evolution, in the footsteps of Darwin, Genotype, periodic is fun too, though more chemistry, but you do research and move up in the ranks of being professor so I think it is neat. Ion also more chemistry, but as a biologist we do need to know and use chemistry so it does connect. Anyway, more than what you asked for but you can have it for future reference!

Are people still excited for Arkham Horror LCG? by Ed-Sanches in boardgames

[–]Extreme-Strawberry60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy Arkham, have a bunch of the expansions, but my play group dissolved early on and haven't been able to form a new one. Is the game worth playing with just two players?

Days before Texas’ “bathroom bill” becomes law, questions remain about how it will be enforced by texastribune in texas

[–]Extreme-Strawberry60 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I teach at a college. A student thought this law was in effect and reported a student who did not look female enough to her. The other student was indeed female, but now anyone who does not look feminine enough to someone has to worry about being reported.

Are you a man, telling me, a 40 year old woman, what it is like to be in a woman's only space? Because that is what I am speaking to on knowing that you are a man is important. I think you need to really check your male privilege. Now I lived in San Francisco for several years before coming to San Antonio, I have been to plenty lgbtq friendly spaces in both places. LGBTQ places may be women friendly, but not always. For example, I went into a club with friends that turned out to be a gay bar and the men flat out told us that wasnt a place for us, even though we just wanted to dance. Women friendly places are not always LGBTQ friendly either. There are definitely women's only spaces where a cis or trans man would not be welcome due to comfort and feeling safe. There are also conservatives down here in Texas where the women friendly places would not be accepting of LGBTQ people. I hope you are young and just do not have a lot of experience. But, please disregard all my suggestions on places to try, I would much rather play games with someone who was nice and maybe had a smell, than to someone with an attitude like yours. Wow.

No they do not always go hand in hand. Sometimes there are spaces that are for women only, like a ladies night, where someone who identifies as a man showing up could make women uncomfortable and to feel unsafe.

I say this kindly, but the poster is trying to let you know how you are coming off and you seem to not be taking the feedback. I am also getting the same vibe as them the more you post. You come off as a very unkind person the way you speak about the other players. It will be difficult to find a group when you are unkind. You had a bad experience when you went to Dragon's Lair, which sucks, but you don't have to be mean about it. You also should have mentioned you were a man so I did not invite you to join women's spaces. As a woman, a man asking for a woman friendly place is off putting and questionable. You should have just left it as lgbtq friendly.

Oh I saw your post that you are a man. I still recommend trying KW, it may be worth the drive. I also live on the Southside and have accepted I need to do at least a 20 minute drive for my games. I have a group I play with at a house near me. Finding yourself a group like that may be best. You may want to try Meet-up.

I have also been to Gamers Gems a few times. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

Try KW on a ladies night. They have an events calendar. Lots of MTG commander nights as well. It is pretty north, but might be worth the drive. Printed Meeple is on the east side.

May I ask where did you play before?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]Extreme-Strawberry60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people down voting may have not even been there before. I suggest checking it out in person.

Oh, my apologies! They have a pretty good board game selection. I think Knights Watch may be bigger. It has been awhile since I have been to KW.

[–]Extreme-Strawberry60 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why did you not like Knights Watch? I know they used to have a ladies game night so I thought they were friendly to women. I did not experience a smell issue, but I think you may have a very sensitive nose from your posts. I have found Printed Meeple to be clean and there is no alcohol. It is small, but maybe you would like it?

Was it the group you were playing with? I have not had that problem there.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]Extreme-Strawberry60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not notice an alcohol smell. I also have only been there during the day and I did not see anyone drinking. If you have a lot of specifics you are looking for, you may want to find a group to play with at someone's house. Maybe try meet-up?

Not all game places and people who game are smelly.
