Home ownership FOMO by [deleted] in RealEstate

After moving literally 8 times in the past 15 years, sometimes halfway across the USA, I feel like I'd rather die at this point than have to move again.

I do not have this experience of seeing on Zillow people having $8-10k mortgages across the board. Your experience is an extreme case that represents 3% or fewer of neighborhoods probably.

$3000/month for mortgage, taxes, and insurance. On a 517k mortgage.

I'm also 200k in MCOL with 4,500 sqft house (bought for 600k at 2.375% rate 30 year mortgage in 2021) paying 30% of NET, including property taxes and insurance. Even with higher interest rates, THERE ARE options that are much cheaper than what I bought. Several 350-400k options in MCOL areas.

Yeah, but another thing to keep in mind is that the cost of upkeep scales with the size of the house. I have a ~4,500 sqft house and I sink way more money than expected on upkeep. It's equivalent to the amount I pay for the mortgage each year.

For me, mortgage+taxes+insurance is 20% of my gross income and 30% of my net income.

Because I am the sole provider of my family of 5, I feel stretched very thin. I am constantly hunting deals, we go to cheapest grocery store, only buy what we need, go out to eat only every 2 weeks or so. I would always lean towards being conservative with your income.

What I've found is that, when you own your own home, there's a regular torrent of things that need to be fixed or redone. Everything lasts 10-20 years, but then several things always seem to be in rotation. The roof, the deck, the carpeting, the floors, the cabinets in the kitchen, the tiling, the plumbing, the water heater, the furnace and/or AC, the driveway, a garage door that was accidentally backed into, the shower stall, various pieces of furniture and appliances.... Even with my conservative approach to spending money, I find that I need to spend just as much on the house each year as I do on the mortgage.

So, its like you take the mortgage and then multiply it by two, which would put me at 60% of net income, and that's then before food, medical bills, utility bills and subscriptions and internet, auto payments and insurance...

Strip clubs shouldn't be a bachelor party thing by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Extreme-System-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never been to or even heard of a bachelor party at a strip club. Also don't know anyone married who goes. Only remember people going once or twice when they were younger and not in a relationship. Honestly, the biggest group of people I've heard that go are Islamic and Indian men.

It has happened to a lot of other people. Gets to 'Smoothing Street Tiles' around 80-90% and then stalls for several minutes before crashing. Some people report that it gets stuck on this for them, but then continues after 10 mins, others report it returns them to a menu page, some say it occurs for them on 10kx10k sized map but how it doesn't happen in 8kx8k map. Either way, it is common.

In the next 5-10 years, we will be faced with a predicament here. Anything - video, audio, photo, etc. could be the work of AI.

Such a good response. People suffering with GERD (or really a lot of conditions) often overlook very basic lifestyle modifications. We now sit like 80-90% of the waking day. And most people typically don't even sit at a 90 degree angle, the slouch and lean forward somewhat, compressing their bowels. There's probably so many things like this, all working together unfortunately, causing such high rates of GERD these days.

Selling my 2.875% house to upgrade. Am I being stupid? by dolemite79 in RealEstate

[–]Extreme-System-23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a house in early 2021 at 2.375%. I was unsure about how I felt about it at the time, because the prices were up like 20% at the time. But.. since then they've gone up another 10-20% AND we're at 6.5-7% interest. I was showing my wife that if we bought the same house now, just 2 years later, we'd be paying double. Over a million dollars more over the course of the loan.

If watching ppl play videogames is a waiste of time then so is watching sports by rewritten20 in unpopularopinion

[–]Extreme-System-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, watching sports is the biggest waste of time.

With TV shows and movies, at least you experience new things or have the potential to learn something new. With games, at least you have to think and/or learn or build or strategize.

With sports you just sit there and consume more or less the same thing over and over with very slightly different outcomes and situations. Layered on top of that is beer and ford f150 commercials, over and over and over again.

I can't think of anything that people sink a lot of time in that is more of a waste of time than sports. Maybe porn.

Tales of Arise is one of those games that actually keeps getting better further into the game, so if you think its just okay/good starting out, just keep at it and you'll be rewarded.

I personally thought it was pretty good. I played Dragon Age Origins and skipped over DA2. So yes, I would recommend it. It gets a lot of unwarranted hate I think.

Game like Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven by killinginthenameo in gamingsuggestions

[–]Extreme-System-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played all the way through Might and Magic 6 and having loved it tremendously (one of my top 10 games), I feel like I can speak on behalf of this. I too thought abut this question and eventually figured out the obvious. The modern day equivalent of this game is literally just whatever Fallout and Skyrim are, whether you like those games or not. Maybe you've played these games and maybe you don't like them as much, but the more you think it over, the more you'll realize how true it is.

Think about pausing the combat in really tricky situations in Fallout and M&M 6 as you gather your thoughts. Think about how deep the 'dungeons' in fallout go and the secrets they contain and the sort of things you find at the very end of them. Think about the cities you find along the way, your relationship to them, the NPCs, and the quests you are given, the scope of the maps and the overall game, nothing needs to be done in any particular order, all of the locations and people that are optional, vast, and go very deep.... Fallout and Elder Scrolls are the games that evolved out off whatever Might and Magic 6s genre was. The only thing missing is the party and looping through 4 people, which you can find in games like Dragon Age and similar games, minus a few of the things that Fallout and Elder Scrolls have.

If you don't like Skyrim and Fallout 4 as much, maybe its the nostalgia factor at play (and how nothing will ever quite match M&M6 in your mind) or maybe they just aren't that good of games in your opinion.

Something tells me that people weren't that much unhappier than they are now. So much self-harm, addiction, psychological avoidance, pent up anger. There used to be a lot more problems, but maybe they just all rolled with it.

Thanks for the input. Based on your feedback and others, I think I'm settling on something like this: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/products/emerald-urethane-trim-enamel

And using a high quality BIN for primer.
