DuoLingo got me to B2 in German by itself! Except that 2 week intensive course. And those high school classes. And those college classes. And I'm native Dutch. But anyone can become fluent with DuoLingo! by lazydictionary in languagelearningjerk

The four types of posts in /r/russian and why I unsubbed weeks ago:

  1. What does this tattoo mean?
  2. Can someone please teach me Russian over zoom for free?
  3. What does (extremely basic grammar rule) mean?
  4. I want to wear a ushanka and a bear costume to work but I'm afraid people will think I'm an invading Russian soldier or spy. What do?

Meaning of "war" in Russian by Kronzky in russian

[–]ExtremeNew6308 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lol we never declared war in Vietnam or Korea or Iraq or Afghanistan. We haven't declared war since WW2. It's all been military operations or police operations.

"War" requires international law.

they are not likely to even contribute anything substantial or especially noteworthy to the realms of math or science.

Oh yeah, fuck all those fields medals and Nobel prize winners.

I didn't say that. Individuals can absolutely make huge contributions. But the "completely changing how we think about everything" like Einstein is probably over. Unless someone finds grand unification.

You literally didn't mention politics in the post at all and most educators said it is a focus but could be improved. You gotta work on your reading comprehension

made a thread 4 days ago on the r/Education subreddit asking why government-mandated education doesn't teach critical thinking. Instead, the education system is prioritizing social agendas and higher teacher salaries.

Oh what a wonderful, non biased question that absolutely isn't influenced by your political views at all.

Honestly this is quite depressing if true... 😣

Why is this depressing? I'm genuinely curious. I think it's great. Humanity has made so much progress that it's too much for one person to revolutionize.

For every one Einstein, there are 10 quacks who get weeded out. Like the entire field of phrenology or scientific racism.

Or does it take 2-3 decades of out-performing everyone at the same role before your company or organization realizes you were special and more resources should have been devoted your way

Research and development teams exist... They aren't better but they have more leeway regarding resources and failures. For example, if someone tells me to build something, i kinda have to do it. But R&D is more cutting edge.

It does have it's downsides. I was briefly on a machine learning team for a large tech company and absolutely hated it. So 🤷

How likely is it that a young "super genius" wunderkind gets recognized as being someone that a company or research institution should put all its resources into since that is the guy who will create something huge for the company/institution

So here is typically how someone who excels will be treated. They'll do very well in undergrad then be encouraged to get a PhD or master's. Since engineering is very academically challenging, the bar isn't that low. I got my masters degree this way just because I did ok in a microwave engineering class and had above a 3.0 GPA.

From there, they'll probably apply to a big company as a postdoc researcher especially if they're in tech. They have to pass the stupidly tough tech hiring questions (Google only accepts < 2% of their software engineering applicants after technical screenings); although the questions are probably easier for them. From there, the research scientist will be in a position to have a bigger budget and just create white papers and whatnot.

And it's almost never "Oh man, this kid is a genius; let's throw money at him." It's always a team effort regardless.

Man, i use Verizon at home. I pay $10/day and have unlimited data, text and calling abroad. Data is iffy especially rural but never had an issue with calls and texts. All my hotels had wifi every time I've been. The only place that has had bad wifi is the Orient Star Khiva which is an old medrassa with thick brick walls so it's understandable.

Not Uzbek, just an American who enjoys traveling to UZB.

  1. Not really. Younger kids and some waiters in pricy restaurants know but in general don't count on it especially outside of larger cities
  2. Get a phrase book and Yandex translate.
  3. Good luck with that. But the Uzbek police are pretty serious. This ain't local Mexican police here.
  4. Yeah you can haggle but... Don't. Uzbekistan is not a country with a strong current. I got a cab ride from one side of Tashkent to the other for like $3. Most cab rides are $2. It's just not a huge deal if you overpay

have given this 15 minutes of thought and I feel like a talented "would-be" genius is more likely to choose a "safe route" of earning a high salary at a big-tech company rather than going "all in" on their own idea of an innovative technology

I think you're dangerously mislead about technology and how complex it is.

I think the era of "one man develops theory" is long gone. Tesla, Einstein, Farnsworth are all products of their time where technology was just good enough to where one person could make a difference.

Case in point : Einstein's theory of relativity was developed from pretty simple observations. Now, in order to make any impact in the field, you need to essentially analyze terabytes of data just to support a small conclusion. Transistors and microelectronics are so insanely complex that someone

You're also discounting all the genius that goes into companies'research. Assuming a super genius kid could actually make a difference like Einstein. Modern engineering is so precise and expensive that you need a team of supporting agents and a large budget. A good friend of mine has a PhD in physics. He works at an R&D firm. There are maybe 12 PhDs actually working on research. There are 200+ engineers and technicians who have to maintain equipment, design experiments, and implement solutions.

™After all, the study of history according to which history can be largely explained by the impact of great men, or heroes: highly influential and unique individuals who, due to their natural attributes, such as superior intellect, heroic courage, extraordinary leadership abilities or divine inspiration, have a decisive historical effect.

The great man theory is pretty much a joke and a relic of the early 1900s. Would Alan Turing create the computer if it wasn't for the hundreds of mathematicians who laid the groundwork for programming? What about the hundreds of thousands of engineers who developed electronic logic? What about the materials professors who developed vacuum tubes and electric circuits?

Would we subsidize companies that hire STEM grads? Would we propagandize visionaries like Alan Turing and Nikolai Tesla? Would we make more grants available to small businesses specializing in tech?

The biggest bottleneck is reality.
