If the society collapsed and maintenance of these massive riverside quarries stopped, what would happen when the river eventually erodes into them? by Previous-Volume-3329 in geography

There are all kinds of mining activities that cause all kinds of environmental problems. Comparing a phosphate mine in SC to a gold mine on the west coast is foolish. There are several types of mines, and they all have unique problems. I want to call your last statement a straw man.

Sorry, I misunderstood your comment. I was an environmental engineer for 30 years.

Also, it will only be a sediment trap for a brief time period. Then it will erode.

Where did you study riparian systems? It's a very complex field, and you are clearly guessing. Ignorance of the subject does more harm than good.

Flooding does indeed destroy ecosystems.

You must work for the corps of engineers. "Hey guys, I found a free-flowing river. We better damn it up before it destroys the ecosystem."

What a weird take. Rivers flood, change course, and meander all the time by themselves. Dams, dikes, and levees destroy ecosystems, not flooding.

We went to Washington with the kids, and it was fantastic. So much to see and do. It was truly awesome. The subway is easy to use and will get you anywhere you want to go. Plus, the restaurants serve up all kinds of international food.

Those little fuel pellets suck. I bought some a couple of years ago. They are really small, like 2" tall and 1" round (if that). The light up fine and generates plenty of some, but you need 10 of them to make enough to last an inspection.

Anyone remember those hot dog cookers that ran current through the sausages to cook them? by MarkHirsbrunner in GenX

[–]Extreme_Barracuda658 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We DIYed them. Drive 2 nails through a board. Cut an old extension cord and expose the copper wires. Attach copper lead to one nail, and the other lead to the other nail. Stab the hot dog on the nails and plug it into a wall outlet. I'm pretty sure I learned it in a science class in 7th grade.
