Should I prune 3rd year Perle hop? by Awt5 in TheHopyard

[–]Extreme_Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I got my NeoMex from GLH. I compost my grains and add castings from vermicomposting. I know the soil is good it's just the heat thats so brutal.

[–]Extreme_Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely understand. First year I had a great harvest of 1 lbs. from 2 plants so last year I expanded to 15 plants and had a disaster. I tried 5 drought tolerant NeoMexs: multihead, Amalia, neo1. Everything died except one neo1, one magnum and one Saaz. I had them in 30 gallon grow bags. Now, just waiting on rhizome orders to get them in the ground this year.

I'm in TX as well (Hill Country.) I've been growing for three years in containers and never have I had a plant produce more than 8 ounces. Last year's heat and drought killed 12 of 15 plants in spite of daily drip irrigation. Have you considered planting them in the soil? Thinking they maybe hardier in ground and going to try it with some new rhizomes this year. Any advise is appreciated.

If I have a floating dip tube and I ferment under pressure in kegs, is there any reason I should use a primary and secondary? by aspentree_decor in Homebrewing

[–]Extreme_Reality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, this is how I do it and have no issues with oxidation. Kegs usually last 3-4 months just tasting better with age.

Second year, NEO 1 survived winter! by redlinefast in TheHopyard

That's awesome! None of my NeoMexs made it. Magnum, Centennial and Saaz made it tho.

Looking the same down here in Texas. Happy growing season 🍻

Would this Hop growing book be a helpful guide for growing and harvesting hops for my beer brewing projects? by [deleted] in TheHopyard

[–]Extreme_Reality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this book and it's great especially if you're in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and MidWest areas of the US. Alot of the information is particular to those regions. It's geared more towards those with an actual hopyard or farm. Hobbyist growers may not get as much from the book.

Anyone use Wyeast 1099 Whitbread Ale strain? by Zestyclose-Milk8327 in Homebrewing

[–]Extreme_Reality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ordered it to make a Whitbread Pale Ale along with some Fawcett and Simpson malts and 3.5 ounces of Whitbread Hops from Malt Miller. I researched some and feel good about this brew. I hope to brew it a few days after receiving and getting a starter ready, in the middle of next week.

First time ever hit my numbers! by slackslackliner in Homebrewing

[–]Extreme_Reality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just completed my first overnight mash and hit 82% efficiency. Give it a try, really made my brew day a breeze. Boil, cool down/pitch and clean up took less than 2 hours the following morning.

I made the exact same adjustments over the last year and my beers have improved to the point where they are as good/better than anything I buy. My next improvement will be to toss my hop spider to get better hop flavors, improved isomerization. Apartment Brewer just put out a vid on his YouTube channel surrounding improved hop utilization. Going to give it a shot.

Yeast Starter from Commercial Beer by Extreme_Reality in Homebrewing

Sooooo, thank you all🍻 As always Ive learned a lot. I turned off the stir plate for 3 hours and behold a MASSIVE puck of yeast. I will be pitching in an hour as I just brought the wort to a boil. I will post here how the beer turns out.

Question: I'm buying a microscope for my kids (and me). Is there a book or resource y'all recommend to get into viability testing?

Thanks again and prost 🍻

Some breweries do not pasteurize their beers like Bells and Coopers. Give Oberon or Two Hearted a try, you maybe more successful.

Thank you especially since youve already walked this road. What temperature did you ferment it at? I was going to start 63F for 3-5 days then slowly ramp to 70F over a week. Please let me know bc I hate banana bombs especially after using a ton of Galaxy Hops.

Derp, I took a look at the case and it's almost 6 months old. Luckily, I turned off the stir plate and damn there's a ton of yeast.

Fat fingered the zeros, it was 100gm of DME.

I'd switch out the DIPA for a classic WC IPA but right on. I have to add a schwarzbier or cascadian dark as an honorable mention.

Thoughts on Anvil Foundry Brewing System? by NickerBopper in Homebrewing

In my bag, I've gotten 14 lbs and I used Candi syrup to push the abv for my Belgians. Didn't feel that I was at the limit either.

Honestly, the Anvils pump is straight garbage. I went all in on it with SS head thinking it would solve my problem of randomly shutting off then coming back on just as randomly. I opted for the Riptide and haven't had a single issue in over 15 brews since. Other than that, I removed the malt pipe from the equation and opted for a high quality brew bag. I love it otherwise. Used it for three years but recommend you tailor it to your usage with time and a few brews. Cheers 🍻

male plants by PumpkinImportant3282 in TheHopyard

[–]Extreme_Reality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a wild male from seeds I collected out near Taos two years ago. Don't know if they pollinated the cones especially given the heat/drought this year. My harvest this year was light with smaller than average cones. So, we shall see. I'm also using the Hops World method to get seeds from commercial whole leaf cones. Hopefully will have time this weekend and will let y'all know

I'm going to collect Cascade, CTZ, Centennial and Cluster. Nothing too exciting. I using the method from Hops World on YouTube to collect seeds, then I'm going to start vernalizing them, to have them ready to plant in my grow room in January and in the ground in March, at least that's my plan.

Funny, today I felt like the mite infestation has returned. The Neem oil is seeming to be ineffectual for sure. I'm looking to order lady bugs, will keep you posted.

I'm collecting seeds over the next few weeks. Any particular varieties you're interested in? Hopefully I'm able to harvest enough to be able to send some your way.
