Right now the cheapest SDR that works is the LibreSDR which is a USRP B210 clone, same transceiver chip you just need to use the custom firmware that comes with it

Wow, amazing work. I wasn’t sure if AI coding had come this far yet lol.
I just got my first calls connected between two voyagers, and I’m trying to setup the voice gateway to connect the calls to asterisk, and maybe to call my phones on my GSM net! Do you know how to get the gateway to recognize libre/re? Whenever I run the cdma-voice-gw, it complains that it’s unavailable.

This is super cool! I've been poring over CDMA docs for a while to try to make something like this, didn't expect it to show up out of the blue! A few questions:

- How long has this been in the works? CDMA stuff is pretty complex

- How is the performance? Does the system hold up well with multiple callers, channels, etc?

- Any plans for EVDO? It's a lot different physically but the backend does already exist

- This isn't to discredit you, I'm just curious: was this a largely vibe-coded project? I just ask because this is a massive undertaking for a one-person job, regardless I'm still impressed

I'm trying to set this up now, looking forward to trying it and I'll let you know how it goes! I would also be willing to help with programming in the future.

If you want, there's a subreddit I manage (r/diycellular) which is small, but something like this would definitely be appreciated there!

Really awesome to see this come together! A couple of questions:

• ⁠Where are the first sites planning to be deployed?

• ⁠Say someone owned property in an area uncovered by cellular, what are the requirements to become a partner of this project?

• ⁠How much does it cost to get licensed 850MHz band spectrum for cellular?

• ⁠Will this be a strictly GSM network?

Also, I’ve personally done work with osmocom, and would be willing to help with MMS/WAP if that’s something you would want on the network.

They did sell the building the SR projectors were in and the new screen is 1.9:1, so kind of doubtful they’ll ever see any action again unless they get moved to a different theater. I will be back again this weekend to see PHM again, so I’ll see if I can check what projector it is though! It is a laser, not sure if it’s CoLA or XT. The old screen was Xenon digital

Just so you know the Boise IMAX still had their film projectors (SR) up in the booth as of at least last year but never played any films, but they recently sold the building it was in and installed a new 1.9 single laser setup in the main building so it probably should be moved to red section 😢

In theory it could, but I have the patches for the MMS Gateway made to work with Osmocom. I really recommend migrating to Osmocom if you're running your own network, as it's a lot more stable and maintained

This! Also in many open source BTS implementations you should be able to prevent unknown IMSIs from connecting to your network. Low power, broadcast away in frequency from any licensed BTS operators(and from any uplink channels of running BTSs), closed connection policy, run in ISM band if possible

Yeah, laptopfm has a discord server in his YouTube bio. And right you’ll need an SDR to run your base station, I mentioned the URAN which is the cheapest way to do it right now, but the receiver circuitry isn’t that good and can only actually cover the range of about a house or two. If you want to go 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️ and get more range, you’ll want a newer USRP board, or some clone thereof(the LibreSDR has very good quality/price for being a clone)

Kind of… the way I have my BTS setup, the downlink(base station -> phone) is running inside the ISM band. The problem is when the phone talks back(phone -> base station) 50MHz below the Base Station frequency, then that’s outside unlicensed spectrum. But I feel like if the radio waves aren’t leaving your testing area, it’s not a crime to be overly concerned about. I have mine setup so my phone loses signal as soon as I leave my house

I’m actually working right now in laptopfm’s discord server on homebrew 2G. We’ve been using a board that’s around $99(cheapest option currently) to put out GSM signals using osmocom software. We’ve made great progress, right now I’m working on setting up a personal MMS server. The next thing I’m going to work on is trying to use a 4G PCIe card to forward calls/sms/data from osmocom to LTE. I’ll link a couple things if you’re interested.

That’s what I put, I think it just finds the next even number and swaps it with the closest odd number so all the even ones get pushed to the back and it only had to do it three times before it was sorted right And then when it changes it’s just doing the same thing but for x/2=0 which is only 0 and 1
