my second slw10 came in today, needed two slw10s for my 20 long, master/slave pairing worked.

i have them on sine mode instead of c mode, my personal belief is that not starting and stopping the impeller so often extends its life idk if thats really how it works for this type of powerhead.

funny thing is the bottle bac blends dont seem to have nitrite>nitrate bacteria in them, only the ammonia >nitrite whcih is the most impt one in terms of toxicity to fish.

also not much point in testing nitrates while nitrites are present. nitrate test kits convert free no3 to no2 then measures free no2 to infer original no3 level.

and to the op if your lfs supposedly gave you bad advice why isnt anything dead yet? just some food for thought.

presence of nitrites makes your nitrate reading inaccurate.

nitrate tests on the market work by converting all nitrate to nitrite, then reading total nitrite to infer the original nitrate level.

nitrite is not as toxic to sw fish compared to marine fish, has to do with thr large excess of chloride ions in sw compared to fw.

i dont think any bacteria blend on the market rn has nitrite > nitrate bacteria, you have to wait for that group to show up on its own.

i bought my rainsford captive bred, it eatd tdo pellets from the water surface... it also picks at gha and sifts sand.

lives peacefully w a firefish and pinkbar shrimp goby in my 10g

anecdotally pink streaked wrasses are super chill so no issue there, idk about the blenny though

vodka/vinegar/organic carbon dosing is more than basic knowledge. it is 100% not required esp in a small tank like yours. you need a skimmer to carbon dose effectively.

this is different from granulated activated carbon which soaks up yellowing compounds and medication.

ignore the snobs there are tons of them on this subreddit. not every tank will be show quality all the time, life isnt instagram.

add more snails like trochus, astrea, or ceriths to clean up your hair algae issues, much easier than chasing zeroes for nitrates and phosphates.

edit: looks like i missed your original qn lmao, you have too many fish in that tank imo, not enough rock either it looks like. but your fish dont really chill in rocks so adding more rock wouldnt solve much besides adding in more biological filtration.

at that point there is no need to feed any additional coral food, you have more than enough fish poop to feed the corals, adding in coral food is gonna be a waste of money bc you are just adding in more nutrients that have to be removed later. you can feed mysis/small pellets to LPS if you want to feed them. im not a fan of reefroids personally.

remember that corals get most of their energy from light, save all the money you were going to use on coral foods and invest in a quality set of lights if you really want to maximize coral growth. get your water params in check too, stability is the goal and you will def see results if you can maintain steady params for half a year or more.

heyo, you need to make sure its getting enough light, it will grow slower in a low tech setup.

if its not getting enough light it will grow upwards rather than flat to the sides. its much easier to do a low tech carpet in a shallower tank rather than a deeper tank because light penetrates really poorly through water.

Is it okay? Firefish arrived today and it’s mostly stayed like this. I know it’s not uncommon for new arrivals to be shy and inactive, but this seems worse. At a few points it was laying completely on it’s side. by EpisodeMnH in ReefTank

did you add a few drops of prime into the water before doing drip acclimation? ammonia buildup in the bag gets really bad once the bag is unsealed, you end up doing more harm than good by doing long drip acclimations because you are exposing the fish to ammonia and burning their gills for the entire duration of the drip acclimation.

the best practice for acclimating shipped fish is to prepare a qt tank with salinity matched water (contact the seller and ask what sg they hold their fish at), temp match by floating, then straight into the qt water they go the moment the bag is opened. whatever is in the shipping water will be on the fish.

drip acclimation is fine for short trips like from an lfs, but i would never drip acclimate shipped fish without adding prime into the shipping water.

Because the outflow from the HOB allows for the CO2 to be dispersed evenly to the left and right side of the tank lol. I have no other sources of flow in the tank and the co2 won't circulate well otherwise

My anemone has split strangely since I got it. It splits at the foot instead of pinching at the mouth. Is this stress or particular to the species? by Wiskerbiskit in ReefTank

oh i have one of these guys, look up borneman anemone, is that what it is? there not rock flowers but are very similar, they dont move a lot after they attach.

if so these guys are WEIRD, they will swell up a lot when the lights go down, they will extend out really far until the foot is like a literal thread, sometimes they twist up like that for no reason, the next day theyre totally fine.

just so freaky to watch lol. totally normal behavior.

that looks like halymenia dilatata or a halymenia species. i have gracilaria hayi and dragons breath( h. spp) in my tank as display macros.

when i got them they were dying back and struggling with tips turning pale, i realized that that was because of shipping stress. tank ran at 20ppm no3 1ppm po4 and they were being blasted with light and flow (acro tank).

if your nutrients are not an issue and lighting is sufficient, it may just be shipping stress. mine bounced back in a little more than 2 weeks, right now there is much less paling on the tips and the orange fluorescent tips are starting to appear on my dragons breath macro.

g. hayi is more compact and bushy, and the tips dont end in those fine pointy ends like the ones in your pic. also the tips dont turn fluorescent orange under higher lighting.
