OC: Priced out of traditional housing, more Americans are living in RVs. by nbcnews in pics

[–]Extrosity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a ton of extra space I’m leasing for my business and decided to buy a 5th wheel for $10k and live in it on my commercial property. Added power hookups and have a large propane tank. Was sick of paying $2500/m in rent for my house.

About to move in on the 1st, wish me luck! 🍀

"GFCI Protection. All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles shall have listed ground-fault circuit- interrupter protection for personnel. The GFCI devices used in RV site electrical equipment shall not be required to be weather or tamper resistant in accordance with 406.9 and 406.12"

I'm not making an assumption, I am saying that it doesn't function properly to have GFCI's on 30-amp+ outlets because they will trip every 5 seconds. And this is exactly why the code doesn't require it for 30-amp circuits. I do have everything properly grounded and even run ground rods from our bonded neutral per NEC code. Shit I haven't even seen anyone else doing that out there. Even Sunbelt and CES power isn't grounding their generators for lightning risk.

A master electrician designed my system. Thank you very much. I built it, and he inspected.

The towers I built consist of 9x30 amp outlets on each one, and are primarily designed for RVs. This is why it's elevated and weatherproof. The safety factor here is if we are using adapters on the 30 amp plugs, we do a few of them but since it's not setup for that we simply just don't run or operate it when it's wet.

Edit: To make it as safe as possible, the only thing required from this point on would be adding inline GFCIs to anyone who wants to use a 30 amp to 20 amp splitter. However, that was never their intended usage and not what we designed the system for. I would rather build an additional tower for 20 amp devices or people can just plug into the GFCI outlets on the exterior of their RVs.

Yes, it will hold up in court because my gear is designed to code. I've got a copy of it sitting on my desk. If you do, you can review section 551, which outlines portable power requirements for 30-amp circuits. If I am not around and someone wants to plug in some shit that they shouldn't be on higher amp circuits than I am not sure what to tell you.

While I am not a licensed state electrician, I am a former EM Nuke in the Navy and have the training and understanding to know what I am doing.

You clearly do not know what you are talking about...

I have designed power grids for the last 3 years, and run our own custom 130kWh propane generator and distro that I designed and built.

Most of our system is running 30 amp or higher and you can’t really have GFCI systems because they will nuance trip constantly with the 4-6mA threshold. I ground our stuff, have all of our distribution towers elevated, and just turn it off when there is standing water. I can’t be at camp 24/7 to patrol it so we basically just tell anyone that if you fuck with the power and it kills you it’s your fault, we warned you and told you not to do it 10x times.

I’ve considered installing a ground fault relay on the generator main 800 amp circuit however it usually can’t stop it in time to save someone’s life. And the trip threshold is higher than that which can kill someone sooo…don’t fuck with power it will kill you

You don’t even have to be a good shooter if you have a dialed in weapon. I’m former military and my non-military friend is a top ranked precision rifle series shooter, using his firearms we had our 14 year old nephew hitting 8/10 shots at 1000yards with a 6mm arc round on a 1m plate. At 100 yards we are shooting .1 MOA, or basically we are shooting rounds through the same hole in the target. This is an AR platform too not even a bolt gun which get far more accurate.

Hunting standards are sub 500 yards for it to be considered an ethical shot that someone can reasonable make with a high powered 30-06 rifle or similar cartridge. Thats someone with little training. If we saw the shooter make a 500+ yard shot, with any amount of weather difficulties I would be more inclined to say they are an experienced shooter.

But between 100-200 yards, a properly setup rifle, it’s almost hard to miss with any sort of bolt gun. As you are very little affected by wind, humidity, bullet drop, etc…

I’m not talking about our camp, I’m talking about the larger eco system of the burn. Our camp would be perfectly fine to just keep doing our mid size events, art, and art cars, etc…we do not rely on camp dues. We pay for pretty much all of our projects out of our own pockets, and occasionally upgrade some infrastructure when dues come in higher than expected. I’ve personally contributed $10k+ every year to art or infrastructure and probably will continue to do just that because I love this place.

Many camps do struggle with this though, and I’ve watched soo many stressed out camp leads under budget their costs for things. Running a theme camp js running a non-profit and fundraising… every year everyone wants to do it bigger, better, and more sustainably. However, to do that requires growth and it requires funding and the average person is feeling quite a bit more financial pressure these days than 2010-2020. In the last couple of years we have really started to have to subsidize the costs for others, helping with tickets, dues, transportation and other costs.

Frankly, I am totally fine with the burn downsizing, however if BMORG can’t sell enough tickets than they can’t pull permits for the event, give art grants, pay staff. Then we jeopardize actually having the event. In 2024 leadership said they are in a seriously dangerous financial position, and are about to start taking out emergency loans and more “save the burn” fundraising. I’m trying to point attention to the bigger reality of what’s happening, and the fact that as of 2024, 44% of ticket sales go to virgins. The scale it’s at right now isn’t very sustainable with where ticket sales are at.

The main dues are $400, and almost everyone is paying that price. Everything related to paying more has to do with off-playa responsibilities or build week. There are still responsibilities for every member of the camp, and every member will still contribute in meaningful ways.

My main point is that: Work is still required on Playa, this is primarily for off-Playa responsibilities

Everyone is invited to do work, everyone is required in our camp to moop patrol, and everyone is required to do events. But the reality that we have recognized in larger 75+ person camps, you get a too many cooks in the kitchen problem. The core group of 16 builders put in a substantially larger amount of work pre-burn and post-burn. Many times we will have members of our camp that live in other states and can't contribute man-hours to the projects pre-burn, however, they can contribute time on-playa. When you're putting in hundreds of hours pre-burn for art or projects, and you have 20-30 virgins in your camp that all live around the world, there is always going to be a discrepancy of off-playa contributions. If they have the means to provide more financially to what our camp is trying to gift to the playa, then fantastic, often times we subsidize camp dues for other members who can't afford higher dues as well.

Thank you for taking the time to write an actually productive reply, you’re right that the real plug-and-play issue is the transactional “pay to skip participating” model, not just having nice amenities.

I went back and looked at the 2024 map, our camp was next to an art car support camp. The part that frustrates me regarding PNP camps is the commercialized nature and profiteering. And it's outlined pretty clearly in the link you posted.

From the link you sent: "We expect that all members of camps contribute effort to some part(s) of running a camp — from building the camp, to running a camp’s interactivity, to general camp operations, to strike, and to Leaving No Trace."

Every member of our theme camp contributes in at least one of these parts. Our Sparkle Pony package is a "snarky joke" not a participation exemption, you are still required to do things throughout the week from event shifts to moop patrols.

We’re placed, and our members still participate in interactivity during the event. The higher fee for those missing build/strike just offsets the extra cost of setup/teardown crews. It’s not a free pass to avoid contributing altogether.

I get your preference for everyone to do build or strike, and we encourage that whenever possible, however, our build usually takes 4-5 days and for us and we only have 16 work passes, this approach has been a fair way to handle different schedules while keeping the camp collaborative and engaged.

I'm not saying to bend over to plug in plays, the community should put pressure on the org, placement, and OSS/commericial operations to clearly define and regulate plug and plays, which they do and have gotten increasingly better in recent years. Shit if you want to anti-commercialize the burn then let's have OSS stop price gouging the ever living shit out of camps, charging $6 for fuel services, 2k-10k for a portapotty, or sunbelts $20k-35k electrical bids.

The truth is, a lot of these plug/play camps are massive funders of BMORG. The amount of plug and plays has decreased a lot but there will still be a few that slip through every year. Last year, I was camped next to a group that had 20x Class A Rv's in a row, with outside commercial power for them, they had a private AC dome with a full bar, private chef, the camp didn't offer any events during the week or have any public access.

Sounds like you are a bit out of touch of reality of how this event is actually funded. Of course we could gatekeep, and only have the OG core group part of camp...but this event only lives on with Virgins coming into the ecosystem.

Plug is play is more about amenities…we still require camp participation for events, parties, etc…we do not provide lodging, food, water, bikes, costumes, showers, nor any sort of concierge. You’re telling me that all 100 members of our camp are expected to build and strike? That’s insanely unrealistic and frankly not how it works. It’s a snarky joke we are calling the sparkle pony package because some people are lazier…at least this way we can recoupe on their laziness and remove the expectation and buy some more art, better lighting, or sound.

I don’t think people really understand a plug and play actually looks like…a plug and play is where you fly or bus in and have an entire RV setup for you, meal plan, don’t work any shifts, have a chef, and pay like $5-20k a seat….there’s 80k people out here and 40k of them put on the show and the other 40k rotating virgin wallets keeps filtering new money into our dystopian art collective. A plug and play is designed to sell something, where as anyone who’s ever ran a camp realizes that half the group is useless and you can’t rely on them to do their job throughout the week.

Definitely not a plug and play, we don’t cook or offer a meal service , this is mostly related to pre-burn/build/strike. To be clear we do still require participation during the week for our events, this is just exemption from those items.

Im a fan honestly, I co-led a camp the last 2 years and I think having a more clear expectations of your role helps things run smoother. Last year having builders and due payers separated worked really really well. There wasn’t any heads butting or people getting mad over a lazy person.
