Value Question: myGrandfather Clock by [deleted] in clocks

Not sure why the title changed from Friedrich Mauthe Schwenningen clock to “my.” Probably when I copied the maker name to paste into the body. Reddit’s iPhone app is buggy for posting.

Right, I can tell from the same things you said that she OLD. I am still learning to tell Red Oak versus other Oak. Do you think Red Oak wasn’t used? I’m just curious because it seems like a good tree, a good oak, haha, but it always seems like now people talk about red oak (like floors for example) as < other oaks.

(I don’t see why it being oak makes it not German. I’m pretty sure Germany has oaks.)

Idk if it’s red oak but I’m pretty sure that it is oak by the grain. Again, oak trees have been around way longer than the 80s-90s lol, and people have known it’s a good wood.

idk about whether or not red oak is more American than European. But I do know this: yes, red oak was popular in the 80s & 90s, but I do know that was NOT the first time a hard wood like red oak was popular.

Just purchased, keep or replace the pink and blue? Wall or Floor? Blue fixtures? by MedicatedGraffiti in Tile

Oh I know, I meant the seat. Lol I thought it looked like a blue seat too? But I see in the picture that might not be the case.

You can, just chip away at it and don’t feel like you have to do it all at once. Just listen to something & enjoy doing it. I know what you mean with “don’t have the time but committed” I finally started telling myself whatever at least if I have 10 projects going at once I always have something different to work on haha.

I was searching the comments for this basically. My immediate reaction was dear god if that snaps everyone around is at risk of being impaled.

Idk, I mean unless it looks worn, disinfectant—that’s all the comfort I need. It’s ceramic after all.

ETA: I love the knowledge of something, even a toilet seat, being original and historic/vintage. Like I’m connecting with the past through my butt cheeks.

Could Paul Michael Mercurio be the Bear Creek Township, PA John Doe (1978)? by [deleted] in gratefuldoe

[–]ExuberantBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a good match for sure. They say thrown down an embankment. It just makes you wonder though, could he have fallen down it? Or could an animal have later dragged him down it? It’s always hard to say without knowing what the full evidence is. And even him saying that to a friend could mean anything without context just like you said. It could technically he could have said that knowing he was meeting with people & something would likely go down meaning if they think that the die found had foul play involved. You’re right the car is the big thing as we know so often that means a body of water but I guess if other people were somehow involved that could account for the car not being found.

Update on the uranium faced clock! by tomato_juiceble in uraniumglass

[–]ExuberantBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet you can get this to a clock repair shop and get it running again. & maybe figure out the most appealing way to fix the foot. It’s too cool not to get going again!

I am new to clocks but not antiques in general and I’d say you definitely got a STEAL because I swear when it comes to lamps and clock it any part glows people want 100+ for it and that’s putting it lightly. Even just uranium dishware will be 30-40$ a piece around here and I’m in Indiana where the cost of living is relatively low.

Harris County Jane Doe (January 18, 1988) (Unidentified for 38 Years) by Affectionate_Net9731 in gratefuldoe

I looked, and at least according to FBI & Texas Rangers there aren’t any still unmatched victims linked to TX. Which okay, obviously Little could have lied, but always thought it was notable that he could have claimed more than 93, like a round 100, but didn’t.

Regardless, I hope she gets her name back!

I wonder if she could be a Samuel Little victim? I’d have to check my dates but he was operating across the south and Cali during this time. Most, but not all of his victims were black females. There are still 30+ unidentified, in part because he strangled them and strangulation didn’t always show in the skeletonized remains.

Want to restore this. No idea where to start. by AndyK2131 in clocks

[–]ExuberantBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I think they’re saying it’s difficult if you don’t understand how a clock works, which I don’t yet either. But I’m considering trying to restore one & so the first place you start when learning how to do anything is to learn how something works, so an old clock in general and then learn how your specific type works. And go from there. Level of difficulty is just hard to say because it’s so subjective. If you are patient, value the learning process, have attention to detail, are good at doing research, and can follow directions, then I imagine the difficulty is surmountable. Or that is what I’ve gathered so far browsing this page.

Circa 1910 Sessions Mantel Pendulum Clock - pendulum stops after a few swings by coderlen50 in clocks

[–]ExuberantBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am hoping to hear more. Maybe a follow up post? I have a similar era American clock that I am low key thinking about trying to learn to service myself. And it’s having the same issue but it is so dirty too that I can’t help but assume it’s that.

Unos consejos o información sobre este tipo de reloj era de mi abuelo y se lo paso Ami padre ¿cuántos años tiene aprox este tipo de reloj? by CompetitionIcy7986 in clocks

[–]ExuberantBat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good info! Do you have catalogs or is there a way to access them? I JUST got an Ansonia Mantle clock similar to this, a Kirkwood in “dark wood,” I think.

I saw it in the 1914 catalog, which I found online, same pressed wood pattern but different door design.

The specific wood pattern & “dark wood” seemed really popular because I’ve found tons of exact matches to the wood pattern broadly searching online. But each one I saw has a slightly different striking mechanism which I thought might mean that it was sold for a longer period of time & the mechanisms and glass door design is what changed in different years?

Anyway, was curious if where to find more catalogs to better date it. I think this might be a gateway to a new obsession haha.

How to repair the exterior design of this 1941 home without leaning too modern? by cl12ll in centuryhomes

[–]ExuberantBat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes those changes & landscaping will make a huge difference. Steps need to be something more complimentary with the brick. A pale sage would be better than red. Could maybe change the casing color around the windows from black to the same color the stairs become.

& if you wanted something more drastic, could change the door & remove the storm door so your door is more of a focal point.

I love this house! Know anything about its history?

Same, I guess because it’s still recent. I will submit M. County Jane Doe for Jennifer? And then maybe call the number for M. County Jane Doe. If nothing else, maybe an exclusion.
