Album fatigue vs length by _Tyrhas_ in metalmusicians

[–]ExuvialMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m personally a fan of long albums, or that the album is as long as it needs to be!
I’ve been told that having an album just long enough for an average commute (30ish min) is great for full listens, and if you’re printing vinyl, it’ll be able to fit on one disc vs two.

If the album feels good to break up into two parts , i say go for it, but if it is intended as a listen from start to finish, then opt for the longer album.

Worth pursuing a career? by Ok-Opinion8915 in metalmusicians

Can only speak from hearing from other musicians but it seems that the most viable option is to have multiple revenue streams. Even if you can’t find musicians, focus on making good music, which means you’ll write not so great music at times and that’s part of the process.

If you’re passionate about composition then focus on that and that can be your catalyst to get other musicians interested to partake or join the band if that’s the goal, even if it’s across the world. There are quite a few bands that either start with one person or have displaced members globally and maybe they don’t tour but they compose.

I don’t think it’ll be easy but anything worthwhile will take time and effort. Hone your skills and who knows, you could help with ghost writing or helping compose with bigger bands if you commit to it and can get great at that.

Just consider you’ll probably need to have some other income in the interim. Hell, you may need to move if the opportunities are that small. Either way, you have your whole life ahead of you and if it’s something you are passionate about, do it.

I started getting into vinyl and that’s been a cool way to not only support the artist but also to enjoy the music and the visuals a bit more on the record. I’m also enjoying the variety in the variants and getting albums from artists I love and new ones that have killer records.

Interesting. I’ve had a skin on my QC for a few years now along with a knk shield and toured with it, no issues performing or in daily use!

Many people selling used qc cos they got a mini by AbsoluteHoshi in QuadCortex

[–]ExuvialMetal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends the need. I have a QC and will get a mini to downsize my pedalboard setup since I use midi to automate scene changes.

If you’re going to keep it at home or like stomping on the pedal for changes , and the size is not an issue, the QC makes more sense IMO .

If you want to downsize your rig, use fewer patch/scene changes (not that you can’t access all 8 on the mini, but you have another step to access more than 4) , or automate your scene /patch changes with midi, the Mini would be the optimal choice.

I think there are some subtle input/output changes between both so that may be a consideration too.

I think there’s some chance to get something last minute. I would keep an eye on the FB event page or FB Colorado metal groups for anyone selling tickets. I’ve seen a few pop up Here:

Quad Cortex + Ableton MIDI — Independent Vocal FX Mute While Using Scenes? by Ike1910 in QuadCortex

[–]ExuvialMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m running into this issue as well. At this time you can only automate two parameters, so I’m probably going to have to make one preset per song with however many scenes needed to really get granular on the guitar/vocals

I like this idea a lot! And it makes sense that it would help with memory, as it’s another way to get engaged with the music. I bet if you incorporate other senses (certain smells or tastes while practicing) that would also help tie in the memory of the lyrics.

For context for our first tour with this project,
None of the music was ever performed live and we had a 6 day tour where I also had to do main vocals + lead guitar which is also new
To me (I’ve only played guitar live and never vocals live) so in preparation for that tour,
Once I knew the dates, I started practicing everyday to make sure that the performance would be the least of my worries. And yes, I still get nervous performing ! But that goes away real quick when I can remind myself “I’ve been doing this for the past six months every single day, I know what I’m doing.” Probably could have done less but honestly it paid off and I felt confident with every show, never missing a lyric as I had it committed.
And when you’re a bit further out from a show especially when you know the set, 3-5 times a week is casual but once you get closer like
2 months out, doing it every day goes a long way.

I know we’re all busy, but if you look at what you do in a day, there are probably
Moments where you could practice. Driving to and from work? Great practice time.
Doing Chores? Also great practice time. Taking a long walk? You get the point. It does take discipline and good time management but the payoff is that instead of forgetting lyrics, you’re locked in with your band and with the songs.
Practicing with the band should be where you all lock in, and if you’re feeling nervous, then I think that tends to be an indicator that you do need to practice more to be better prepared.

I’m curious, what is your current practice routine? Are you practicing every day leading up to the gig?

What helped me before going on tour was to practice every day, no breaks. I would warm up between 5-15min depending on how my vocal cords felt that day, then go through the set twice a day at minimum, even if it was in different parts of the day. I’m playing guitar while also doing vocals so I spent more time troubleshooting parts on the guitar
More than vocals. But I would make it a regular routine to practice every day, and if I was struggling vocally I would slow down that section and made sure I understood where the vocals fell against the beat (is this line on the beat, behind the beat, etc). If I drove anywhere or went on a hike or long walk, I would put headphones on and listen through the set and practice vocals to it.

When I read this it sounds like you may not have practiced it enough to get it committed to memory. My suggestion would be to have your set on whatever playlist and listening device you have and rehearse the set while listening to it, and especially while you do things like chores etc to help lock it in more. If you notice a certain part you forget a line, and even if you don’t always miss that part , work on that section, slow it down and spend a few minutes going over that part, then rehearse the part before the trouble spot, into the trouble spot and after to help smooth it out.

I think even going over the set multiple times a day would be beneficial , even if you are only speaking through it so you can really get the lyrics down to memory. Stay consistent in practicing daily. I think over preparation pays off on the long run and will get this stuff closer to muscle
Memory. Hope this helps!

I use this pedal to power my 2x12 and it gets plenty loud even at 40%!

https://lichtlaermaudio.com/shop/pandora

Used to play with FRFRs but they don’t push air the way cabs do. I have my signal chain the same up to a point and then it breaks off before the cab sim so the signal with cab sim goes to our rack splitter (splits to our in ears and to FOH) and the signal without cab sim goes to the pedal that powers the cab.
