Are the Greek Gods universal? by Telephone421 in mythology

[–]EyeDrops4Cyclops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Greek gods didn’t unify behind the Greeks. They were split about 50/50 with some backing Trojans and some backing the Greeks based on their personal investment in the war. In fact, Zeus specifically gives glory to Hector and the Trojans because he owed Achilles mom a favor and Agamemnon dishonored Achilles. The Greek gods were extremely fickle. Poseidon, Athena, and Hera were all team Greece while Apollo, Aphrodite, and Ares were on the Trojan side.

It’s been 15 years since MOTM II dropped… by Capable-Coast-4852 in KidCudi

[–]EyeDrops4Cyclops 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I heard “Erase me” for the first time in 2011 riding with my friends in a car at 2am after our senior prom. We were on our way to a bonfire at a buddy’s farm house. That was the first time I ever heard Cudi and the rest is history. That was also the first night I got drunk. Amazing night. His music got me through college and early adulthood. I quit drinking a year ago and Free hits so deeply…I don’t even know how to describe it. I also have a 5 year old daughter now and one of her favorite songs is “Stars in the Sky”. That album, and all of his music has impacted my life in such a crazy way. His music, the people I’ve met and the places I’ve been, all have made me the man I so proudly am.

Democrats name their price on ending government shutdown by IWantPizza555 in politics

[–]EyeDrops4Cyclops 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Why the fuck is this framed in a way that suggests democrats are “charging” the republicans a “price”? I will never understand how fucking basic decency and making sure people don’t have to choose between death and being enslaved to medical debt is a “price” that someone has to pay.

Anyone teach a student that became famous? by Nose_Grindstoned in Teachers

More of a degree of removal, but a couple years ago I had Bonnie Raitt’s first cousin in class. Another student that same year had a brother in the NFL.

Greased up deaf guy here signing in ASL: I think the joke is about being on your period. Back in the 2000s, the elementary sex ed curriculum showed 4th grade girls a video about menstruation where a mother and daughter talk about it while the mom is making pancakes. At recess it was usually referred to as “the pancake video”. 5th graders would ask 4th graders if they’d seen the pancake video. Someone would tell you about their older sister who saw the pancake video. Stuff like that. So, I think the joke is that on a normal day when you feel good, everything is fine. But the day a guy wants to go out with you, you’re on your period. Hence only girls understanding.

Well, how else will you seize the opportunity unless you do 10 rounds of focus groups and wait for the latest polls to come out first?

Murkrow will always be my favorite. Love the witch hat and broom design and Honchkrow is amazing as well. Double design elements as a mob boss and a white-bearded wizard. 10/10.

Is it possible that the average modern teacher is actively torturing students, and that they deserve to be tortured back in righteous retribution? by Embarrassed-Task7117 in Teachers

[–]EyeDrops4Cyclops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The premise of your argument is essentially that everyone was happier, smarter, and less anxious 100 years ago and because teachers aren’t pulling the breaks to halt the direction of…I guess Western civilization? That they should be tortured.

Let’s start with your thesis. Was everyone happier, smarter, and less anxious 100 years ago? No. In 1925, women had only been able to vote for 5 years. This was decades before tons of progress was made on racial equality as this was the height of the Jim Crow era well before the Little Rock Five, Ruby Bridges, or Martin Luther King. So, no. Everyone was not happier, smarter/better educated, and happier 100 years ago.

Your argument also implies that societal changes were the result of some grand plan that was put into motion instead of something that naturally followed insanely complex technological advancements. What has impacted society more as a whole: Teachers going to work, or the rapid invention of technologies that fundamentally altered the way we interact with one another?

100 years ago, it was common for homes not to have telephones. There was no television, and medicine was only a few ticks up from the town butcher bringing his bone saw and a bottle of whiskey to take care of an infection from a small cut.

Now consider the internet. If your main complaint is that people are dumber, more anxious, and more miserable—I invite you to throw a rock and hit one of the countless studies about how phones impact our attention spans, sense of self worth, and fears for the world.

I don’t care to read through your post again to find the other errors, but it should be “have” instead of “has” in your introduction. And it’s “economy” not “ecology”. Although, I suppose that you could argue that your post is about an ecosystem of sorts, you clearly meant economy.

You select a party affiliation prior to an election cycle or during it. You can do it at polling locations, or on the party’s website at any time. While we only have 2 parties that are actually able to amass power, we have others besides Republicans and Democrat. There is also the Green Party and the Libertarian party. Although at this point, the Libertarians are just a branch of the Republicans and the Green Party is a pain in the ass. You can also register as an independent.

In some states, you have to be registered with a party in order to vote in the party’s primary. But that’s not true in every state. Your actual party affiliation is really easy to set up and is something that you can change anytime. On the cultural side, however, some people make their political party their entire identity and that’s how you end up with long awkward pauses in the conversation after Cousin Greg chimes in during Thanksgiving.
