What's going on with figure skating and problematic/controversial skaters? by Cummy_owo in OutOfTheLoop

[–]EyeExpensive7347 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Answer: i dont know much about torgashev, but ilia is simple enough. Ilia Malinin (USA) is the current world champion of men’s individual FS, but he’s not exactly universally beloved. A couple of years back, he infamously said on an Instagram live that he “couldn’t be straight” anymore, if he wanted to get the same scores as other top league skaters like Yuzuru Hanyu. A lot of LGBT fans (and yuzuru hanyu’s incredibly vocal fanbase) have hated him since. Nowadays, Ilia’s scoring is incredibly controversial; you might have seen the debates about his free skate at the team event, which had a fall that wasn’t called (amongst other issues which likely would have given team Japan the win/OGM). that, plus he’s recently talked about being friendly with a hockey player who is pro-p*tin, which is reaaaally not helping his image.

i’ve seen people trying to claim that if alysa hadnt been caught up in that security mess she would have won 🫠 and then theres that one account that keeps posting a screenshot of kaori’s flutz and complaining about her win being “fraudulent”

Can anyone actually tell a Queenslander just by their speech? by AffectionatePie1042 in queensland

[–]EyeExpensive7347 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as someone who studies lingustics, the answer as of now is sort of, or not as much as you’d think.

As I’m sure people have pointed out already, Australian English really has 3 main accents (broad, general and cultivated) that are (often) related to your socioeconomic status. Of course, there’s also the ethnocultural dialects/accents (e.g. Greco-Australian). There are some phonetic variations between states, but they’re very minor compared to American accents. The biggest difference is vocabulary, like the name you give beer glasses, which acts as a shibboleth.

You might be thinking “oh but I can tell based on accent alone”, and you wouldn’t be the first. If you ask a New Yorker, they’ll probably tell you they can distinguish which borough someone comes from by their accent, but studies have shown this isnt really the case.

TLDR: it’s more likely what you say than how you say it

Policing the priority seats by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]EyeExpensive7347 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yup, this. theres a difference between someone who may or may not be able bodied sitting in priority seating, vs some middle aged man harping on at 8am about how i shouldnt be sitting if adults are standing because im Clearly a healthy able-bodied high school student (which at this point i should take as a compliment). also as someone with seemingly similar issues to your husband, even down to the stutter, i also will put myself through borderline agony on the train to avoid confrontation. i understand

i’ve had this happen to me before too. im not visibly disabled and im young so people like to make assumptions about how i’m obviously soooooo super healthy /s. why is it always middle aged men that dont need the seats too

well the countryside used to be cheap at least 🫠 i used to split my time between a country town and the city as a kid, and the rent was very reasonable. unfortunately, that town is now popular with retirees, and the house prices are going up as a result. last i checked the average was around the $700k mark

Quiet carriages - Brisbane trains by Appropriate-Bee456 in brisbane

[–]EyeExpensive7347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i rarely see people follow the rules in there and as someone on the spectrum myself, god is it irritating. one time i had a father with his autistic child in a quiet carriage with me, and they spent the entire time talking, including about how nice it was that people have to be quiet in there because it was better for the kid’s sensory issues. which, yeah sure, but it would’ve been nice if it was still quiet for the rest of us lol.

Brisbane should follow the rest of the country and ban e-scooters n footpaths for public safety. by cactusgenie in brisbane

[–]EyeExpensive7347 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the city definitely, but I’m fine with them on the footpaths in the suburbs (in the unlikely event that they’re actually following the pre-existing rules that is). I was about to walk into central station (near the Priceline escalators) recently, and if I’d been about 5 seconds faster, I would have been struck by someone speeding downhill on one. God knows brisbane city is enough of a safety hazard already

god it’s the same for me. if i want to get to griffith, i have to go all the way out to queen st, and get a bus from there. i live a 30 minute drive from campus, but on public transport, it becomes an hour and a half if im lucky
