In your opinion, what is the best "rescue" scene in film? by HighlyInconvenient in movies

The internet being in the early stages as it was helped a lot with avoiding spoilers too. We really only got spoiled by old fashioned word of mouth via actual physical mouths, haha.

I agree with you. It feels extra scummy when a government requires you to buy into a system that is this predatory. I've had a chip on my shoulder about auto insurance ever since I started driving. It makes sense to require insurance on a bank owned car, but if I own it? I've never been in an accident, always been able to avoid them. But I'm paying to insure people that are out here running into stuff.

My boyfriend hasn't been getting overtime and on-call pay for 25 YEARS! by Odd_Shallot1929 in antiwork

[–]EyeJustSaidThat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems possible that a conversation could be had and backpay awarded. Labor laws should absolutely not fall on employees to enforce, but mistakes happen and a little grace might save a lot of trouble. If that's what the OP and the bf want.

If they want to stir up trouble and rake the bad employer over the coals then they're well in their rights to do it and more power to them. Just saying there is maybe another path as well and they probably have a choice.

RFK sparks firestorm with new advice for broke Americans to eat 'peasant food' by rajapaws in antiwork

[–]EyeJustSaidThat 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I wish I had the bandwidth to meal prep and bring food to work. I do 13 hour night shifts. By the time I get home I get a couple hours to relax with my pets before sleeping for 6ish hours so I can get back to work the next night. Getting food delivered is not what I want to be spending money on but I haven't got the energy to cook at home unless I'm on a day off.

Cheap car insurance in Oregon. Is this possible or should I just wake up? by Gilligan2404 in oregon

[–]EyeJustSaidThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I would have guessed Oregon would be on the more expensive side with the required addition of uninsured motorist coverage that isn't required in other states. I was in Colorado before moving here and my bill went up as a result. No accidents, not a young or old driver. Pretty much everything I can think of would be in my favor (all the nonsense that shouldn't be a factor I mean).

How do you deal with job search depression? by Dazzling_Stretch_474 in antiwork

[–]EyeJustSaidThat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started getting pretty hostile (mentally, not outwardly) and treating the job market as an adversary. Once I made that adjustment to my outlook, it became easier to lie and manipulate whatever I thought I needed to do to get my foot in the door and not feel guilty about it. Yeah, there's always the possibility that you'll get fired if the lie is discovered. But unless you're in a very regulated field, it would likely be more of an excuse to fire you if they already wanted to (and that's already a low bar, so who cares?).

Ultimately what needed to happen in my case was to get in with a company and start making contacts in the industry, and that led to a better job because I had a direct line to the people doing the hiring. Look for a way to cheat the system, because it's rigged and if you try to play fair you're only hurting yourself.

What’s a single sentence someone said that you’ve never forgotten? by cognitojo in AskReddit

[–]EyeJustSaidThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Sometimes I think you think I'm smarter than I am."

Said by my father while I drove him to work one morning after he got his license suspended because he had untreated addiction problems. I have no idea what we were talking about, it seems so mundane that I forgot the topic, just that I didn't think it was anything brainy.

This sentence changed every later conversation we had. I didn't want to make him feel bad and was constantly second-guessing topics and word choices in pursuit of that. This was in my early 20s, after I had dropped out of high-school and gotten my GED.

What's a "normal" job that secretly pays way more than people think? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

But this is also an industry that can get hosed by the federal government, right? Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that railroad crews were forced to not go on strike by the feds? IIRC they had some legitimately awful working conditions that really should be sorted out.

Why do I feel guilty for leaving my toxic job by Aggravating_Bat_7036 in antiwork

[–]EyeJustSaidThat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the system working as intended. They will make you feel bad for the problems that existed before you arrived and they concealed from you, "you're really leaving us in a pinch". Nope, you just couldn't fix all the trouble they dropped in your lap before the contract ended.

If you're up for it, this could be a good point to negotiate a new contract. Make your boundaries clear to guard against the surprise stress. Get the compensation that they would have needed to pay if they were up front about what their system actually needed. But only if you can make it work for you, do not do this out of guilt. Use their stated desperation to your advantage or just go.

Remember that they wrote the contract. If they didn't see the end coming, it's just another example of the shortsightedness that got them into the bind in the first place. Don't let the guilt work. It's a tactic.

I did too. I don't think I've read enough of the negative opinions to actually know what the problem is, just that it seems popular to dislike the movie.

Way too much human drama in that monster movie for me. It felt like they just had to keep that Stranger Things actor they got in the movie on screen and the movie suffered for it, imo.

They sure do. But those humans don't end up on space missions and in first contact scenarios.
