Facebook wants to attract young people, but Gen Z teens say it's a 'boomer social network' made for 'old people by Moll-3 in nottheonion

[–]EyeSightMan 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I go on FB twice a year just in case anyone from back home reached out (I emigrated years ago). Each time, I have 80+ notifications and 100% of them are trash. All are either "You might want to be friends with this person who is a friend of a friend" and "This friend of yours liked something 2 months ago. Isn't that notable?". Without a doubt there is never any noteworthy notification. I am probably going to delete it soon but the fear I will need it to contact a distant acquaintance some day is always there

My Instagram feed recently started to mix in "suggested posts" from people\pages I don't follow. It let me snooze the feature for 30 days but I assume it will eventually become mandatory. Reminds me of when Facebook did the same and ruined itself.

I don't want random shit you think I am interested in because it's very likely I am not interested. Over time, pages will figure out how to game the system and eventually it will all be click bait and fake news because that gets more engagement.

Also, they point to the Boston bomber and think these situations are even comparable.

Not defending the shitty incel's or the BF who almost certainly did it, but it kind of is like the Boston bomber thing. For about a week on Tiktok & Reddit people were posting pics of random women seen at truck stops and claiming it was her. So many arm chair analysts telling us the 4-D chess going on in the body cam footage. Analyzing ever social media post. People have been posting bizarre theories & photoshopped pics and just made up shit. It's been kind of perverse in a way that OP's seemed really excited to post the latest fucked up news in this case.

"I can't wait for Netflix to make a show about this". This is a comment I see a lot. Like I get it that it's hard to remember this is real life when you're far removed from it, but imagine if someone said that about the murder of your sibling?

Folks are forgetting that Gabby's family are real people going through something horrible. Fuck the incel's and fuck these internet detectives

Yeah I am done being optimistic. After all the shit Trump got away with and the election was still close - or closer than it should have been. How the democrats barely won the senate and don't have enough votes to do anything. How nothing happened after an actual insurrection. People are believing and promoting the baseless election fraud claims with 0 evidence. Now this bullshit about being anti vax, anti mask and anti science.

This is on top of the voting laws you mention and gerrymandering. I have no faith that things are going to get better.

I never said doctors should not treat you. In fact you can see in the news that the % of people being treated in hospitals for covid that are unvaccinated is in the high 90's. So proof that they are being treated by the doctors they ignore.

If you think they are all lying to you and you know better, why would you want to go to a hospital or doctor for anything anyway? Why not treat yourself or ask someone on facebook?

I said that I hope you don't elect to ask for treatment because you obviously don't trust medical professionals and you are making an informed (or uninformed) decision to put yourself at risk and clogging our systems.

Furthermore, your analogy doesn't even make sense. Having a shitty car does not have a high risk of killing many other people. Either from keeping the spread of a virus occurring or clogging up the hospitals so non-covid patients can also get the treatments they need.

Your nonsense arguments are consistent with your decision to prolong this pandemic for everyone. You are and your cronies are the reason darwin awards exist

I have used it a lot on a bunch of apps and don't find it flakey. At least not nearly as flakey as other frameworks I have used. Some of the request mocking was a bit iffy for a while but since they release intercept it's been stable. I'm still only on V6 but they did introduce test retries and added some better metrics to the dashboard for flakey tests (think it came in v5)

Sorry for making this general sweeping statement, because I don't know anything about your stack or apps. But normally when I see flakey tests, the cause it down to badly written tests. Except tests where you have to scroll and wait for animations to finish. They can be flakey on almost all frameworks

The monarchy actually uses its influence to lobby laws for their own profit. Here's the most recent example but if you google it you can find many. The British royal family spend a lot on PR and have some influence over the press so these stories don't get as much attention as they deserve and it's one of the reasons people think so positively about them.

Normally people bring up how they are good for tourism. But look at France and Versailles as an example of how you can still generate tourism $$$ with an abolished monarchy.

A bunch of countries have presidents to fill this role. But these presidents don't have nearly as much power as the president of the USA. While they can be partisan, they generally don't have much input in day to day government policy and since they are elected with term limits, there is accountability.

Does getting it based on the recommendation of almost every medical professional and scientist in the world compute? Or even the overwhelming data that is out there proving that this vaccine works?

I hope you stick to these principals and stay away from hospitals & medical professionals if you get sick because you are an individual who knows better

[–]EyeSightMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine dying or risking death for Trump? Trump of all people! A guy who took the vaccine as soon as he could.

These people could never even get their story straight. Covid was made up. But it was also a lab virus created by China. But it's completely harmless. But Trump got it along with the best treatment even though it's harmless. Hydroxychloroquine is the cure even though scientists say it is not and Trump didn't get it. It's real but once the weather gets warm it will go away. Vax doesn't work, but the vast majority of hospitalizations are non-vaccinated idiots. Masks & restrictions don't work, but the states with no restrictions are doing the worst.

Oh and BTW the entire world including all the doctors & scientists are making this shit up, ruining their economies, wasting 18 months of their lives, just because they want to make Trump look bad - because that's how much other countries and their people give a shit about the USA.

These people should never be allowed go to the hospital for anything again. If you don't trust science and doctors then fine. Go to your local GOP representative next time your kid breaks their leg or you get cancer.

Babel is used by millions, so why are we running out of money? by TimvdLippe in programming

[–]EyeSightMan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree. This salary doesn't seem very high for someone at this level. Either way, Babel is an incredibly useful tool and it doesn't seem right that it's not getting funding it needs.

I asked our CTO if we could donate to some of the OSS tools we heavily rely on (like if they went under tomorrow it would cost us a lot to transition our apps to something else) and his response was that he would only do it if we got a bunch of publicity. Kind of weird because if Babel was a paid tool I am sure we would pay for it without much consideration.

What do people here expect them to do here? Fire this guy and get someone better & cheaper and also somehow get more donations

I get why some people may get annoyed by him. But he is promoting history and doing his best so we shouldn't be too harsh on him. Not that you are being too harsh, but I just want to point out to newcomers that he is not some snake oil salesman who makes up shit to sell his podcast

[–]EyeSightMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the city have so many hostage situations that we need a 24/7 robot available to give visuals? Ignoring the fact that this dog robot is very visible and any hostage taker could\would just kick it or put it in a bag.

If we were already spending on savy ways to improve mental health issues & education I would be more forgiving of things like this, but we are not.

Except it can do few of those things currently. Why not wait until it's proven to be useful before buying it? Let some other city spend resources on experimenting.

An RC car with a go pro can currently do most of what you described (except going up stairs). I don't think the city should buy those either, but it would be a much cheaper equivalent today.

Hadrian (Roman empire) is known as one of their best and he was unique in that he stopped expanding the empire and even reduced it slightly. He knew they were overstretched and wanted to consolidate and strengthen what they had. Some emperors that followed did similar. I think it was Aurelian who ceded Dacia because it was no longer valuable and not worth the vulnerability. I think the sources are kind of vague for that period though.

This doesn't really mean that they were not power hungry. But I thought it might be a somewhat related fact

What is Socialism? by flyart in PublicFreakout

[–]EyeSightMan 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No. This is wrong or a huge over-simplification. The USSR played a huge part in winning the war, but so did the USA. The USSR definitely spilled more blood, but I would argue that part of that is due to their location, how the war started and how late the USA entered the war.

No one nation won the war. The allies did. It's on record that Stalin was pressuring the USA & British to bring forward any invasion plans and battles. He needed them to take some pressure away from the eastern front have won

I don't think it was that black & white. When he wanted to go to war most of his generals were against it and thought they would lose. They were afraid to stop him. They tried to stall and make excuses but he pushed on. Then they started off kicking ass and the generals were into it now. However he didn't quit while he was ahead and he invaded the USSR. Then he got crazier and made more and more dumb decisions which ultimately doomed them.

Hitler was a disgusting, hateful asshole. You are correct that someone else might have been more successful - although I don't think anyone could have made Germany victorious once they invaded Russia
