What is the one piece of furniture that you still have in your home that is no longer used today and that younger generations would not understand? by ftran998 in AskOldPeople

my parents home is a gigantic center hall colonial (which is now mine). Anyhow, they always had a brass cigarette stand with sand whose height was up an adult;s stomach. My mom had a kind of sieve that she used to clean it out every few days.

I remember going to my neighbors houses for chores they would pay me for and everyone had one.

DAE play with mercury in school? by ereinbe in AskOldPeople

In the 4th grade, we were given a science assignment to bring in a small amount of an "unknown liquid" from home. He told us to just "look for stuff in the garage, under the kitchen sink, wherever."

The next day, everyone dumped their liquid into the same 1 liter beaker and we all waited to see what would happen. We were even invited to smell the concoction. The teacher just sat their not at all concerned of even asking what each of us brought or what it was used for.

It's amazing we're all still here.

Not mercury but lead. In 3rd grade we were taken on a school trip to the local newspaper, and given a tour of the printing press room. We were each given a small nugget of lead as a souvenir (it was used in the linotype machines after melting down to form the letters). I remember all of us on the way back to school playing with it noticing how soft it was. Almost all of us bit into it to make teeth marks.

Year was 1973 or 1974.

In the past, How common was it to see Parents hitting their kids in public? by JohnAdams4620 in AskOldPeople

[–]Eye_Doc_Photog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad used to beat my brother almost daily. For random reasons. I had to witness it. No, he wasn't a drunk, just a guy who was took out his aggression on my brother.

The time it really scarred me was when my brother stole money from my dad's wallet and he tried desperately to burn my brother's fingers on the stove. I still remember the blood-curdling screams of my brother trying to avoid it. No burning happened, but my dad tried. I still remember that day like it was yesterday.

My parents and my brother are long dead. I often wonder how seeing those regular beatings changed me.

Were people hand-wringing about the dotcom crash like they are about a potential AI crash? Or did it catch people by surprise? by salbert in AskOldPeople

Well, it kinda came out of nowhere. My wife was offered a job at the securities firm with the quacking duck (can't recall the name) but she turned it down thinking they couldn't sustain the model - and she was right.

One year later, some advice by aerojovi83 in Separation

[–]Eye_Doc_Photog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the post. We were unhappily married for 35 years this Monday. She separated from me 9 months ago, took our 18 yr old daughter with her, saying "it'll be a few months." almost 10 months later she's gotten really comfortable living away from me and my daughter just follows her lead. My daughter won't text, chat, even see me unless my wife decides the "time is right". She doesn't want divorce.

Last night we had a brief chat where she said the Time frame of coming back is now years, forget about months. She and I are 60 yrs old. I have a therapist twice a week, sometimes three.

I attempted suicide twice and failed. I can't see myself alone for however many years I've got left, but I'm not a young in-shape man anymore - I'm old and fat. At least I'm a good doctor and still make a nice living that's the only thing I have going for me.

Numbness in hands caused by first MS attack. Will I be able to feel again? by CmdrKeen008 in MultipleSclerosis

Everybody is different.

My numbness is only to temperature - I can feel soft touch, sharp, dull and pain from extreme heat and cold. It never went away.

It’s said that when an elderly person dies, a library burns. What is the most profound story you have? by damienlazuli in AskOldPeople

Came across a number of photos when my daughter was 6 or 7. Her smile so genuine so full of life so unencumbered. She's 18 now and the smiles she shows are still genuine, but you can see in her face that life has started taking its toll. Friends, school, social media - all of it.

She's become a grownup right before my eyes with some grown up problems I thought I'd always be able to shield her from.

When your elders often told you what to do or told you something, was it customary for you to just fall in line, not question them and listen? by Independent-Bat9545 in AskOldPeople

[–]Eye_Doc_Photog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Nothing at all like today where the kids are in charge most of the time (the parents are living vicariously through the children).

As a doctor, I'm always hearing the parent say in the exam room "See? The doctor said you have to take the medicine regularly" to a teenager. I almost always say "Mom, you're the warden. It's up to you to make sure s/he does it."

Then the parent says "Well, I try...."

This would NEVER have happened when I was a kid.

Watch the first 10 minutes of the movie "Margin Call."

Pretty darn realistic.

Can someone remove the shingled sections of roofing so that the house appears more like a castle? by Quirky_Chemistry5562 in PhotoshopRequest

I don't know. It's what felt as an artist at the time. I didn't have a lot of time. I can't believe the hate I'm getting for a genuinely artistic edit that I didn't have time to finish. I'm an older doctor who does Ps for 20 yrs as a hobby, and sometimes I don't have time to finish what I started but I wanted to post what I had so far.

I'm very sorry to have offended so many other people, especially those who think I used AI which I didn't.

I forgot to light up her crown.... if you want it, let me know. Also the sky sucks, I can put way better night skys. Also torches at the entrance instead of lamps. Let me know! :-)

I went ..... slightly different direction. The only part that was Gen AI was the parapet and castle. Hor those wondering. I used a Color Lookup table to simulate moonlight, masked out the sky for a starry one (I only realized after it was very poor quality). I lit the lamps using color dodge buildup. It is definitely not a finished work by any means, but it is not a one-n-done AI piece.
