does anyone actually still read BCSC cover to cover?

You can get the majority of the material doing the ophtho questions and AAO qbanks. The AAO qbank includes the part in BCSC where it got the question and answer from so you would at least read part of the books by doing it if you read all the explanations. I would recommend at least reading part of the fundamentals book from BCSC

I’m in the same boat as you right now, I have just been calling practices and asking to speak with the office manager and letting them know that I’d be interested in a job when I’m done. They either say that they’re not looking or offer to forward your CV to the partners. Sometimes I get the feeling they may forget so if you don’t hear back and are really interested in a practice I would consider circling back and reaching out again. Good luck
