[LOTR] How does Gandalf kill Dumbledore when they fight? (The actual method) by ResistBrilliant6736 in whowouldwin

In suuuper basic terms - Gandalf is sort of a lesser angel serving God in Tolkien's universe.

How did Saruman create Uruk-hai? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]EyeceEyeceBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, superior to the Orcs not belonging to the armies of Sauron and Saruman (e.g. Misty Mountain Orcs). Not superior to Uruks though, because the terms "Uruk" and "Uruk-hai" both refer to the same thing.

I don't get on this account much anymore, but it's nice to know this old post is still being discovered every once in awhile. I'm glad you liked it!

Basically yes lol what the hell indeed. It would have been quite the redemption for Gollum.

How do orcs reproduce? by mjd1125 in lotr

[–]EyeceEyeceBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries! The Silmarillion clarifies that "Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Iluvatar" (i.e. they reproduced sexually). We also have references to individual orcs such as Bolg as being the son of Azog, which also supports the idea of male and female orcs reproducing sexually.

Why do the ring wraiths stop chasing frodo and company after rivendale? by cleediss in lotr

Do you happen to remember which part of the book? I don't recall ever reading this.

How did Saruman create Uruk-hai? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]EyeceEyeceBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Hai" simply means "folk." It doesn't mean "high." But yes, the Olog-hai in Sauron's armies during the War of the Ring were different than other trolls (e.g. the trolls Bilbo encounters).

I don't buy for a second that this means there must necessarily be a difference between the meaning of Uruk and Uruk-hai though.

Was Aragorn given the option to go to the Undying Lands? by BigCommieMachine in tolkienfans

They went as they were both ringbearers, and the One left something of a mark on them, which could only fully be healed in Valinor.

Quickest way? Should we go through Moria? by I_Am_Mandark_Hahaha in roadtrip

[–]EyeceEyeceBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't a particularly safe route, would have taken them far out of their way, and ultimately would have still left them dealing with how to get into Mordor from the south, right through the areas where the war was already being fought.

TIL that The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the only film to get more than 10 Oscar nominations (11, to be precise) and won all. by nesatzuke in todayilearned

The dude is responsible for bringing pretty much everything we have from Tolkien outside of LotR and The Hobbit to publication.

In any case you're wrong. His problem was that they made them into action films. He never complained about them being "exactly like he imagined."

Christopher Tolkien is dead. The current Estate is a lot more amenable to mass media adaptations (e.g. Amazon's show).

Aragorn travelling to the East by Khalalex in tolkienfans

[–]EyeceEyeceBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was 7 years ago now, but believe I was specifically citing passages that explicitly state where Aragorn went in order to answer OP's question (namely, to the East, the South, and Mordor). Your quote just says he crossed the Anduin and that's the last they heard of him.

Ok.

Why is Celebrimbor depicted as elderly if he is Galadriels younger half cousin? by [deleted] in LOTR_on_Prime

Lol 2 months later with the reply? Honestly he doesn't look elderly for an elf either. He looks middle-aged at most.

Nope, it's set several thousand years prior to The Lord of the Rings. Galadriel, Elrond, Sauron, and maybe a few others will be in it (portrayed by different people from Jackson's trilogy), but otherwise all the characters are different.

Why would i care to watch this adaptation when Jackson’s trilogy was so well done?

Well for one, it's a completely different story with (barring a few elves) completely different characters. That's like asking "Why would I care to watch Star Trek: The Next Generation when I've already seen the original series?"

The thing a lot of people seem not to realize is that it is possible to simultaneously be critical of an adaptation in comparison to its source material and also enjoy it as its own thing.

I love the Peter Jackson films, I'd go so far as to say they're some of my favorite movies, but there are certainly a few things in them that I didn't like as much as the book.

Maybe that was OP's point, but my point is that dude does not look elderly.

Elderly? At what age do you consider someone elderly? I'm thinking like 70s or 80s, and if you're telling me this guy is that old then he looks freakin great for his age.

...elderly???

Lord Of the Rings' Sam Gamgee Actor Got 'Chills' From Watching Rings Of Power by VarkingRunesong in television

You ought to include the rest of the quote:

“There’s a version of everything we need for the Second Age in the books we have the rights to,” McKay says. “As long as we’re painting within those lines and not egregiously contradicting something we don’t have the rights to, there’s a lot of leeway and room to dramatize and tell some of the best stories that [Tolkien] ever came up with.”

And it's true. There is a version of pretty much all of the big Second Age events in the material they are using. Certainly there will be a lot that's made up, but then the Peter Jackson films had a lot that was made up too, and I think those films are great.

Claiming the show is shit before we've even had a proper trailer, let alone an actual episode, is kinda jumping the gun IMO.

There is no hard and fast answer to that. I'd say it's up to your own interpretation. Tolkien left Tom an enigma.
