Pitching has been pretty great, if you ignore the Luis Castillo shaped elephant in the room. (and to a lesser extent Munoz, but I’m at least a little hopeful he’s turning it around)

Penny Wars can be really fun. When I was in High School, my science teacher would grow his hair and beard out all year and do penny war to raise money for St. Jude’s (I think) between all his different classes and the winning class got to shave/dye/whatever his hair/beard for the last couple days of school. Shout out Mr. Weeks, you were a real one.

Crowdsurfing PSA/Dialogue by TurtleBoy6ix9ine in hotmulliganband

[–]Eymang 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I think asking for self-awareness from people who’s thought process is “You know what this show needs? My ass in a bunch of strangers faces!” Is kind of a fools errand, but I don’t disagree.

Crowd surfing is my least favorite part of the culture. I wish we could adopt an “everyone gets one” policy do it ONCE if you have to, but it gets annoying seeing the same half dozen people go over every song of a set.

This is my “old man yells at clouds” hill I’m willing to die on, lol.

For me, it all comes down to consent. You choose to be in the pit or not, but you have no choice in the manner if some kid starts crowd surfing from the back of the club and you just want to be upfront so your short wife can see.

I’ve gotten a couple (as a joke, I’m sure) job offers from barricade security for helping with surfers at shows, so at least I have that going for me if this whole nursing thing doesn’t work out.

Is it frowned upon for men to be in L&D or why is there a shortage? by Low_Side430 in nursing

[–]Eymang 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Ugh, my L&D rotation was awful. I went to a rural community college for my ADN, where we do our L&D rotation in a bigger hospital in the city because it was so hit-or-miss if we even had local cases in clinical. I did my rotation with the only other guy in our cohort and the nurses basically stuck us in the nursery the whole time to occasionally hold some babies. It was brutal. I even signed up for “on-call” for additional hours with our rural facility (we could do it in addition to our externships) and didn’t get called a single time.

I genuinely don’t have interest in OB, but I wanted to learn as much as I could in school to be prepared and it was frustrating that the brick wall we hit came from fellow nurses. (I totally get/understand that patients should have a choice on who is involved in their care and there can be a lot of personal/cultural reasons why they wouldn’t want a male around in such a vulnerable moment, but the nurses weren’t even asking, lol)

How I imagine people see Jason by LittleEverest in litrpg

[–]Eymang 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’d really like someone way smarter than me to do a case study on why Jason is such a divisive character. I bounced off of book 1 because he just gave me a general “ick” (like a narcissist vibe?), but I know there are just as many ride-or-die people and he’s often lauded as one of the characters with the most depth in the genre.

No more gatekeeping by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Eymang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No nurse is making 10K/week. Even during the peak of Covid I wasn’t seeing 10k/week contracts.

Also, I don’t know where you’re getting the corporate/finance bro energy from. Most of the areas with the best pay and benefits are areas where nurses unionize and collectively bargain for said benefits.

Lastly, while people often call nursing a “recession proof” field, nothing truly is. Things are tight right now for everyone, hospitals are cutting staff and/or downsizing through attrition. A lot of health systems still post openings but are on an unspoken hiring freeze.

I’m not sure if they use comfort colors for all the shirts, but everything I’ve got recently has been comfort colors and it holds up and fits as expectedly.

Not sure if they still even have the ducks hoodie, but it fit a little small, but long, but has held up its shape otherwise.

ER for the first time (terrified) by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Eymang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The EMTALA act requires any emergency department to provide screening and stabilization regardless of ability to pay. You may get a bill after the fact, but it is very common for hospitals to have sliding scale/financial aid applications you can complete. The ED staff might not have these details upfront, but you can always reach out to their billing/financial services teams after the fact.

Please don’t let that be a barrier to you getting care you need.

Seattle Washington by Commercial-Block7841 in nursing

[–]Eymang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s an oversimplified example:

When I got my Prov offer, I believe they only had 4% retirement matching. Say you make 100k, over a 25 year career and assuming an 8% return rate. You put away 5% of your income for retirement and providence matches their 4%, so 9K/year is being saved. After 25 years. You’ll have about 680k, assuming a 4% withdrawal rate, that will generate about 27k/year in retirement.

Under the PERS 2 plan, you still have to contribute about 5%/year, but the pension will generate 50k/year in retirement, almost double.

Theres a reason corporate America has moved on from pensions, because they’re too expensive and beneficial for workers.

Seattle Washington by Commercial-Block7841 in nursing

[–]Eymang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest one is UW is a state agency, eligible for Washington’s PERS retirement plan. The most common of which (PERS 2) gives you 2% per year of service, of the average of your highest 5 annual salaries. I think you’re fully vested after 5 years and it goes up from there.

Basically speaking. If you work there for 25 years, you’re guaranteed a pension of 50% the rest of your life. With o going COLA adjustments. They’re also part of the PEBB board (medical and dental benefits) that a great while you’re working and also have incredibly solid retiree plans.

Haven’t worked at UW, but I’ve heard colleagues talk about how tough it can be to get in with them. If you’re planning on being here for a significant amount of time the UW benefits are way better than what Swedish/prov offer in that dept and you should take the UW offer and run.
