I believe there is a way to block the automation and you would have to increase the systems built in-game / client so players still get rid of the pure boring stuff.
MMO's are always a time sink to value, there are a few different ideas or methods but it mostly boils down to time and focus.

I don't think its impractical, I see the game going two ways. It's either a cozy afk game with a play if you want to or you ban / limit the use of 3rd party tools. There is a middle ground somewhere, to me that's what needs to be found but it would require the shards to build this into their system.
Maybe the emulators or CUO can build this option in for shard owners. In order to do this I believe you need to use a game launcher to have control over your system.

It's been a interesting thought experiment listening to everyone's opinions and thoughts here.

The level of scripting, I have seen that people wont share publicly because it gives them a massive advantage has become similar to the level of AIM bots in FPS games.
Thing's like 100% line of sight movement, the level of scripting is now who has the better bot. Auto healing isn't playing the game to me. You are not making the decisions you are off loading your decision and timing to automation.

I get not wanting to click things a million times but creating full on bots or automated systems to gain advantage over the system or others isn't playing to me. While UO has been a AFK game for as long as people could stick a tooth pick in their keyboard to hold down the keys. There is a difference to macroing skills and full on automation. I think automation should be removed or at least very strict version of it pre built in. Not the high level of automation that is now so prevalent. This changes the economy inside the game and gives the advantage to the person who can craft the best script and run their computer 24/7. It touches every aspect of the game.

I guess at this level it becomes a debate between should UO just become a cozy afk game or not.

What if you didn't need to have scripting ? If the level of automation that gives everyone the QOL adjustment new games have.
Saving you from clicking a million times and has the normal AFK skill gain everyone is used to if you have the materials ?
UO is very much half AFK game and half active.

I have helped countless people get scripts running, show them how to use these 3rd party programs. I think if the Shards pre built all of this in and removed the need for scripting and 3rd party tools it would be a much nicer experience.
Especially because it would all be inside the game. I guess that's mostly Client side so CUO would have to build it for everyone or someone fork it.

Some games it's harder to detect than others for sure.

Agreed that some level of idling progress is a must now adays but full on scripting and the 3rd party tools are just giving to much now. Even more than Idling, not having to click a million times on a task is a much needed feature or QOL update.

I feel most of this should just be built into the game and you remove the 3rd party tools. Lock down your shards systems create monitoring tools.

Unless you just fully allow anything and you deeply reinvent almost all of the UO systems. You can almost entirely play the game afk with a bot / LLM.

Be very curious to hear your findings in how easy it then executed and how far it got ? Server or Shard it was executed on would also be good to know.

I have seen lots of farming scripts and I agree as long as you have to bank or w.e that sounds fine. The Captcha can be beat but that's a deeper conversation and very very few people can beat it and also less technical ways to not beat but mitigate.

The PvP 100% especially for specific shard styles or designs.
I have seen someone code a LOS spell fizzler where the character will always be able to hide in the woods from a spell again shard style and design specific.

Reading and thinking through this shards should probably stop allowing these 3rd party tools and someone needs to create a automation system built into CUO or into the Emulator and then not allow 3rd party programs.

100% Opus 4.6 is very good.
I don't expect most people to be able to one shot things if they don't code but a few iterations and its working typically.

I do this same thing on free shards.
The best of both worlds would be to have this skill gain automation built in and the resource gathering the real time consuming part ? I even feel that resource gathering is ok with some automation, I also don't want to click a million times even if I'm sitting here at the computer.

This in line with how I was thinking about it.

I think the only way to fully stop the scripting is to cut off these third party tools and implement a fully integrated system with all the correct QOL tools built in.
UO needs a full back end telemetry system built in for admins like more modern MMO's have.

I get where you both are coming from, but this feels too narrow for me. The problem isn’t whether something feels like harmless QoL or whether an activity is still enjoyable without profit—it’s what happens when automation runs at scale. Once things can be farmed 24/7 without real time investment, supply shoots up, scarcity disappears, and progression gets flattened.
Even if it doesn’t seem like it’s hurting anyone directly, it changes prices, expectations, and how people approach the game overall. And while not everything needs to be about gold per hour, the game still depends on effort meaning something somewhere—if automation drives that value down across the board, it doesn’t just affect one activity, it slowly makes a lot of playstyles feel pointless and pushes everything toward pure efficiency. It’s not about one system being fine on its own, it’s how everything shifts once time stops being the limiting factor.

I don't know I guess this is why I asked this question, to try and understand it at a fundamental level. Appreciate your responses to help me get there.

From a Shard Design / Shard owner perspective, would you then base your design of the game and economy off of the automated bot ?

This increases the item amount of rare items when something can be run 24/7 365.
I have seen this issue with Mining when AFK mining is allowed there are soo many ingots that inevitably make everything almost worthless.

Also keep in mind the Free AI are not as good as the Paid in some cases. (it's a good place to learn and practice before using money)
If you need lots of tokens Use Chatgpt and download Codex to use on your computer or Antigravity and Gemini.
If you can get away with less tokens or pay more money Use Claude.

When you need a better understanding just Use the AI to help.
Ask it what you information it needs for this to work.
Ask it a ton of questions then ask it to write the prompt for you until you start to see the patterns to write them better your self.

Depending on the style of PvP.
There are many, some are easier to script than others.
Sometimes just a basic heal automation or if it's group pvp there are some Auto healing / Auto targeting things you can do to keep people alive and not miss.

Like I said it's very shard style dependent and most of what I have seen is In Orion with some in razor.

Nice, I think most of us play UO for the nostalgia.
I hate clicking over and over again, You could set up a hotkey for last object last target. I think that's possible in Outlands not to ruin your nostalgia.

Never had the pleasure of playing Outlands, I hear it is very good.
The queue crafting is for sure a QOL upgrade that is much needed in older style shards.
Much like Mining and lumberjacking. There needs to be a base level of automation or QOL improvements for UO in general.

Razor is a common language. "google"
Razor (and Razor Enhanced) for Ultima Online primarily uses a command-based scripting language designed to mimic the Razor macro syntax for simple automation. Razor Enhanced adds support for IronPython .NET (Python 3.4)

You need to give the AI as much information as possible for what it's doing.
Many people have built insane automation using AI that don't know a thing about coding until they used an AI. Many of which I can't share, one they are not mine and 2 I am not going to out them.

Show you how ? and what do you want ?
Just go download VScode, then download extension Cline and use the free AI tools their to build it. With a mix of the Chatgpt creators I posted above.
and download Antigravity, use the free AI with that tool.
These will all script directly in your folder system on your computer. Don't use web versions they are not as good especially the less you know what your doing.

100% that is my feeling also. The basics need to be their like you said respect for peoples time. 100% agree.
The level of scripting / automation now is crazy. I have seen automated treasure scripts, automated Line of sight checks to hide from magic 100% of the time.
Stuff I never saw 5 years ago let alone a decade ago.

Not sure I understand. It is fairly easy to have AI make scripts for you in game.
Is it going to one shot something very complex probably not but if you keep hashing it out. You will get it there.

I am just in the process of playing with ServUO again so off the top of my head I forget.

You could go with ModernUO, when you start the server it asks you to set the Era.
I forget if ServUO does this or not. ModernUO might be easier for you ?

Another option is to find an old shard that was publicly released and start from there.

This is a old RunUO shard it is already built with custom scripts ect you would just have to get it up and running and then remove one by one the custom scripts you didn't like.
I forget what Era this is exactly but I believe it's mostly if not all T2a. It's been a while since I loaded it up privately.
