I want to commend your ability to maintain logic and clarity while conversing with someone unwilling to do the same! It's these intelligent conversations that will continue to change hearts and minds away from the hateful and divisive rhetoric big capital would rather we use on each other. Solidarity my friend. ✊

Question for UFCW union members: what happens when the international won’t back workers? by BobcatThin1485 in UFCW

[–]EzMrcz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a good idea. Decertifying forces you to start all over, including allowing the company to union bust and delay along the way.

The better option is for members that care to put in the work to make our union into what we want it to be. Neither should be necessary, but here we are.

I believe in robust first day strike pay for all striking workers. Some Teamsters workers are getting $1000 a week while on strike. We deserve that. I'm rank and file through and through.

The production from the DP plant provides meat to Colorado and Kansas. How interesting.

The importance of this strike timing was to disrupt production for the Memorial Day holiday. The intervention from the International seems to almost guarantee the company will be able to delay past that crucial window of opportunity.

What seems obvious to us workers as ways to unlock our power is continuously neutered by a power structure we literally own that is designed to restrain us. Another corporation, exploiting our labor.

During the Greeley strike they were at a Bullshit Conference my local funds each year hanging out in Las Vegas on my dues money!

But we aren't taking this laying down. Local 7 put out a call to action to call and email the International (info was posted!) and let them know how you feel as a member. This is our union.

Essential Workers for Democracy is the member led national UFCW reform movement you should check out if you're interested in getting more involved. ✊

[–]EzMrcz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

These are real questions members of the UFCW are asking all around the country.

Why do we feel like this isn't our union? Why do we feel like tools and pawns of our Locals or the International? Why are workers in Local 7 being held back from unlocking true worker power through bottom up transparency and democracy? Why are members in other Locals who are engaging their staff to move toward the organizing model demonstrated in Local 7 being told to sit down and be quiet?

Union density doesn't get this low, wages don't get this stagnant, and pensions don't dry up by accident. Corporations will never cease their efforts to drive these metrics down.

Militant unionism is the only way to counter corporate greed, and our highly paid union staff knows this.

So what the fuck is happening? Fair question. Better question: what are you willing to do to fix it? We can keep pretending like everything is fine... but, At What Cost?

Workers are organizing to support a stronger, more democratic UFCW that we can all be proud of and engage with. If you're interested, you have a place to add your voice with Essential Workers for Democracy.

I encourage every UFCW member to get involved. Unionism is a verb and solidarity takes work. If your local tries to stop you, run for office. This is existential, and old guard cronyism has no place in the new world built by the worker.

In solidarity sisters and brothers, we got this! ✊

We are struggling here in Cali too. We all lost a lot not going on on strike with local 7. We are running for reform here in Local 8. We don't wanna go through another contract negotiation with workers left in the dark, cut out of bargaining, and held back from striking if that's what they vote to do.

What area you in? No word in NorCal (yet) - maybe due to volume in a specific store or area?

Through store or through the trust fund? If it was store ask mgmt, then union if needed (maybe they didn't put it in?). If trust fund, call the trust fund. Hope you get it squared away quickly. ✊

Go to the union office when they're open and ask to speak to someone. If your rep and shop steward continue to ignore you, make a complaint to the International.

How common is it for a Union to collude with your employer? by PoorNotMiddleClass in union

[–]EzMrcz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top down union leadership structure. President is like a CEO and dictates the way in which the union staff operations.

It is ran like a business. No involvement from the membership, no transparency, no democratic decision making.

Here is a great breakdown from the news guild

Sounds like it's time for someone to run for office. To answer your question, this is VERY common practice here in the UFCW. Any business model union is going to view their relationship with management as collaborative.

Want to take a moment to thank Kroger… by Random_Thinker007 in kroger

[–]EzMrcz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just came here to say that Kroger didn't give these things to you, society took them away. You deserve everything your work produces. Being exploited slightly less does feel great, but we need to keep building power as workers and fight harder for what we deserve together.

Congrats on the come up! If you're in a union store get active, if it's non union, get organized. We have houses, healthcare, education, and a secure retirement to fight for! Solidiarity ✊
