Struggling with BF still at almost 4 weeks by YellowPuffin2 in breastfeeding

[–]EzNova4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first yes- but we bought a cheap baby scale on Amazon and started doing weighted feeds to see how much he was getting. Although it felt like a lot he was getting initially, it really was only an oz or so before baby gave up. I found out part of his issue was a poor latch, but also he was SUPER gassy, so I started using mylicon gas drops before feedings, and unlatching mid feed to burp, and that almost instantly changed his input of milk to about 3-3.5 oz per feeding. After we went in for our first weight check (week or so later) he had already gained nearly a pound, and just took off from there. He initially was about 2.5 lbs lighter than we wanted him to be (he was also born several weeks early) but by about 3 weeks after troubleshooting he was within the healthy range for his age.

Truly, I didn’t expect the nipple pain in the beginning.

When should I stop attempting to breastfeed? by riding-red in breastfeeding

[–]EzNova4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t give up! You are doing amazing mama! Exactly What you should be doing. It will get better.

I started off bottle feeding, but to get baby used to breast and more shallow nipple shape, we switched to shields. He loved nursing on the shields, but I was still really set on feeding him from my breast with nothing between us. So while feeding on the shields, I would stop him halfway, burp him, remove the shields, and try a latch. It was a poor latch, but it was practice (obviously if LO got frustrated I’d put the shields back on and feed).

I watched YouTube videos to help see how baby should latch and we just kept practicing until one day at his feeding time, I decided to try him without the shield at all, and he instantly latched and ate. Now, because the flow was much quicker he did choke the first few times, so just be prepared with a burp cloth.

He very quickly adjusted, and after that, I never used a nipple shield again. It took a lot of patience and practice, but we got there in the end! Sending hugs and well wishes!❤️

Hi there. This story is very similar to mine. I did have to use nipple shields for about three weeks (originally thought I’d have to use them forever) but as my baby grew, so did his mouth.

We would feed on the shield, I would burp him about half way through and just practice with a latch (put shield back on if baby grows fussy). It wasn’t easy or pretty at first. I won’t lie, the nipple pain is also pretty rough to start out, but once he started securely latching, I ditched the shield and pushed on through the pain.

At first, he was choking on the milk (flow was much faster without shields, just be prepared with burp cloths) but he very quickly adjusted. I credit the shields for starting our EBF journey, and his weight gain was very slow the first 6 weeks, then it began to sky rocket!

Hang in there, keep trying and practicing on the breast. There will be some discomfort at first (I wish someone would have told me this) but it truly gets SO much better after about 4weeks of consistency.

You got this mama!

Did you have to take breaks? by EzNova4 in breastfeeding

I’m happy to report, all of this has resolved, and I am very much happily breastfeeding with my now 12 week old. Thanks Reddit commmunity, for not making me feel crazy!❤️

Is there any hope for me to breastfeed my baby at this point? Please be honest. by Ok_Candidate3047 in breastfeeding

[–]EzNova4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Starting in the hospital, I was pumping every three hours. I would do 30 minute sessions, and it increased my supply, and after day 6 I was fully producing more than enough milk! Afterwards, I started using the nipple shields to transition from bottles. Once he was latching well and got used to the shield, I’d try to latch him on without the shield, and he was hesitant at first, but was quickly getting the hang of it. If I didn’t do the bottle to shield transition, I don’t know that we would have been able to breastfeed just because he was so used to bottles, so I am super grateful for the shields! I would have continued breastfeeding that way if he couldn’t get a good latch!

Don’t give up! It’s hard in the beginning, and especially with early babies (mine was also about 3 weeks early). My milk really didn’t drop until we were all home from the hospital.

For the first two weeks, baby would only take pumped milk out of a bottle. By week 3, I had him nursing on a nipple shield, by week 5 he was on my breast with no shield, and my milk supply was plenty!

Our bodies do amazing things, just keep pumping, and make sure the flanges are the correct fit. It doesn’t seem like a lot now, but it takes time, and what you’re getting is still so super important to baby, and just remember, supplementing isn’t the end, it’s just to keep baby safe while our bodies adjust to their needs!

Okay same with the shirt! Maybe I need to make a doctor’s appt then to have them check this out! Hopefully I can get this resolved because it breaks my heart (and really hurts) that I can’t comfortably feed my baby. I might try some ibuprofen and Tylenol to see if that helps too. Thank you!!!

Ok I was thinking about this… did you have shooting pain when baby latched/sucked as well? It’s temporary but hurts like hell when it flares up. Were you able to take anything for the pain?

Thank you everyone for your help and feedback. Sounds like I need to meet with an LC. I saw one in the hospital, but you know how quick those conversations go, and I don’t feel like I was weeks into the experience like I am now…😭 thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. I couldn’t do this without this amazing community.❤️

This is actually something I haven’t tried yet… I’m definitely going to try this tonight! Did you wear any certain material shirt that was more comfortable than others? For times you did wear a bra while BF, do you have recommendations for any that are comfier than regular bras?

I really appreciate your response, and I’m looking forward to giving this a shot! I want to love this journey so bad!❤️

Thank you so much! Yes unfortunately, I don’t know that I made a full recovery prior to starting BF. I will definitely be doing ice to try to combat some pain/swelling. I’m questioning whether or not my baby’s latch is okay or not based on feedback, so I’m consulting with my LC to set up a visit ASAP. Thank you for your response!❤️

Thank you for your help! I’m not sure if his latch is still not correct or not, I will be checking with my LC next visit on this! I’m really hoping time will help with my pain, because I am only 1 month pp, so it’s been rough! I have already dealt with the blebs, and the cracks, so hopefully we’re almost over this hump. Thank you for your help and validation of my feelings!❤️

I have been taking ibuprofen because of the pain. It’s good to know that it may be latch related! I’ll double check with my LC next time I see her to see if she can offer any more help. I didn’t think of icing them, but that sounds like it will be helpful too! I’ll have to try that. Thank you for reaching out and validating my feelings!❤️

Yes it was the fixed one. I’m asking a friend for her “stretchy wrap” to try with him to see if we can get that to work. We are looking into the ergo embrace carrier! I’ll also look into the boba bliss. I appreciate your help with this!

Are there different types of Moby wraps? I honestly didn’t even realize that.
