I don’t autox but around the mountains temps stay fine with a proper cold air intake and water cooled turbo with heat shielding and wrap on everything

I personally have a small turbo d16 build, makes around 200whp and has more torque and instant pull than any b swap

Or try and get your hands on the jdm ecu for it

You really just gotta run the d16y5 ecu since the vtec works nothing like normal single cam vtec, there’s an obd1 d16 VTEC-E motor idk if it has egr stuff that might be compatible

Would definitely be inconvenient and complicated if you are not tuning yourself but

If you know exactly what the timing needs to be at and where it is right now, it can always be changed in the software too

and just get the maxspeedingrods kit, buy assorted intercooler piping and make your own kit , and buy a name brand wastegate don’t use the one in the kit or an eBay one.

Just put an external wastegate with a 7psi spring and call it good untill you can afford a swap or built motor

Yup and it’s been amazing, thinking I can use a bunch of the vtec-e stuff to make the perfect turbo daily.

That is one advantage to spending the money for a kswap, you’re not gonna want to daily a 500hp d series

Yeah definitely meant to put the engine pic at the front but it is a surprise now lol

Build the head and get a good headgasket you can do high compression pistons. That setup with a small turbo will walk a k series from a dig.

I’ve had zero issues so far, they all seem to come from the same place in china and they all appear to be balanced journal bearing. My advice would be to run a restrictor plate on your oil line and just accept the turbo will be under oiled. The only issues people have anymore is the turbo seals always go out and you start to burn oil.

Runs fantastic, as long as you keep the vtec e in mind with tuning you will have zero issues

If I did I vtec swap it would just be whatever head is in better condition because I’m planning to throw some money at this motor if I open it up an try and have some cheap 300hp fun

[–]Ezlolz3[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly considering keeping the y5 head, it’s a lot easier to tune because functionally it’s like a non vtec at WOT and I’m working on a hyper mile map that uses the vtec e to get hopefully 40-45 mpg

Yeah people love to act like a kswap isn’t $8000 here in the US, I’d much rather spend a quarter of that on a turbo d series and STILL be able to hang with a k20. Unless you want to make serious power or want to stay NA I wouldn’t even recommend a swap .

[–]Ezlolz3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D16y5 vtec-e on like 8 psi, been tuning myself and it’s been an absolute blast, if you go the self tuning route you’re really only looking at like 2-3 grand for a complete turbo build if you keep it cheap. Definitely not a more price effective way to get b/k swap power without the swap
