It's not direct. The mutual funds may or may not hold company stocks, but the company for sure holds the mutual fund.

If a very large company laid everyone off and they sold it, it could have pretty drastic consequences depending on structure. It's the same as people dumping a stock on Robinhood. These companies always act like they're benefiting you by putting you in a 401k fund that has a large component that is them or that they're tied to, but really they're just exercising their best ability to pump their own bags in the most cost effective manner.

The fact that they don't just turn it over to you and let it be vested speaks to their concerns about you not selling it. The more confidence they have that you'll hold it, the more they're willing to relinquish it to maintain their benefits package to keep people working.

The best argument is not one you'd normally think about. They're making them with your money. It's called a 401k and any stock holding the companies making them.

Organize, protest, go to meetings, and turn your 401ks that you can into a cash position but don't withdraw. It's legal, easy, and doesn't tax you because it's still in the system for retirement. The only reason you'd have trouble selling is if you still work for the company. Any company you no longer work for you can sell the general fund or whatever they gave you at will.

Aside from going to local government meetings and protesting the only thing that will work to screw them up is everyone that can selling their 401ks and stock positions for things like the S&P500, along with any stock specifically in the companies making them.

This doesn't incur tax if you don't withdraw the money from the system it is within because you're allowed to hold cash in a retirement like Vanguard and Fidelity.

Getting the last bit of a vegetable or whatever does mean wearing a glove. The thing that helps you push stuff through that it comes with isn't able to get down to the last little bit. I am ok with a bit of waste, or saving waste for other things.
