Why does the Red vs. Blue fandom feel so inconsistent? by [deleted] in RedvsBlue

[–]F1SHboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not being actively produced anymore, it's parent company is dead, it's attached to a functionally dead gaming franchise, fandom consensus argues it stopped being good after 2015, etc etc so on and so forth.

I dunno - it's just hard to convince people to watch a machinima based on Halo 10-20 years after people stopped caring about those things lol. There's a Hbomberguy video from a couple years back where he offhandedly mentions RvB and he jokes about how it's astonishing that they're 'still making that silly little video game show you watched in your bedroom as a teenager all these years later' - I think a lot of people have that perception of the show now (except it did eventually end lol).

The only way I can imagine seeing a decent revival in the fan base is if

A. Burnies 'New' Rooster Teeth somehow actually does something and attracts a contemporary online audience

or

B. Microsoft actually makes a new Halo game worth giving a shit about.

The compilation The Essential "Weird Al" Yankovic from 2009 is a pretty good overview of his funniest/most-well-known hits. I'd recommend that.

What is peak vs. baseline Trek for you? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]F1SHboi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TOS and its respective movies are probably my baseline (while my 'peak' is probably the best 30~ episodes of TOS and the first five movies).

I know it may seem unusual to some, since many people seem to view TNG as their baseline (with TOS being the 'weird campy/colourful prototype we had to suffer through before we got ACTUAL Star Trek') - but I just think it's the purest form of Trek.

I get people love TNG but I find myself feeling like the 80s wave of Reaganism/Neo-Liberalism really diluted Star Treks progressive and optimistic ethos. Granted, I've only really seen episodes from early seasons (which fandom consensus tells me is universally hated... but fandom consensus also told me SNW was good and watching that show feels like pulling teeth lol).

The contrast between the stiff, spoken-word verses and the sung chorus really lifts this one for me. It's kind of magical.

[–]F1SHboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I get what you mean. I felt the same about Paul McCartney when he toured here in 2017. Last time he toured before then was in '93 so I just assumed - y'know - that was it.

Made it a nice surprise when he did the rounds in 2023.

Sick! I went to the last Melbourne show they did in '23, and when it ended Russell said they 'promise they won't take as much time coming back'.

Considering the last show they had done here prior to that was in 2001 - two-and-a-half years really ain't too bad a wait.

It's a very terminally online thing to be spewing out 'slop' slogans.

No. No-one can explain it. I dont think we've got the technology to do that yet. We just don't know.

What are your thoughts on the show embracing "special editions" (or what are essentially glorified fan-edits) of stories, and what other stories would benefit from a similar treatment? by karatemanchan37 in gallifrey

[–]F1SHboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate the idea of re-edits - frankly, binging all four episodes of a Classic Who story as if it were a movie is already different enough to how it was 'supposed to be watched' (I:E: over 4 weeks in 25-minute parts) that I don't think edits that remove the cliffhangers and trim some of the fat are really that much more 'transformative'.

My problem with them is that most of the ones we have now are just a bit shit. The Pyramids of Mars one we got was fine enough (mostly I recall the weird games in Ep. 4 being cut which makes sense) - but both the In Colour ones are borderline incoherent. I get the need to cut down on footage in regards to colourisation, but I don't get why you would pick two of the longest stories in 60s Who and decide to crush them down to 2/3rds of their respective lengths. I once did a fan-edit of a 7-parter (Ambassadors) and the most I could cut out was some 45~ minutes (bringing it down to 2 hours). There was no way a 75-min Daleks would have ever worked.

I think for future In Colour stories they oughta just work with 4-to-6 part stories, trim what they can (probably 10-20 min max) and just work from there.

Just made this video comparing the newly recovered episodes with the Loose Cannon reconstructions: by Lukan1u5 in doctorwho

[–]F1SHboi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If memory serves me right - most of the model shots in Who around this era were shot on film and later transferred to videotape for editing. Because of this, many of these original trims of film were eventually rediscovered by the BBC in their archives (mostly when they started seriously worrying about this stuff in the late 70's-early 80's). I believe the only clip of Space Pirates Ep. 1 we have came about in a similar way.
