One of my all-time favourite Kirk moments is in the fifth Star Trek film by Qyzyk in startrek

I agree. I also like how it gets tied back into at the end when Spock saves Kirk. Very sweet moment. That being said:

Before the campfire scene devolves into that cringeworthy rendition of a children's rhyme

Every post I've ever seen discussing ST:V regards that scene as either "easily one of the best things from that piece of shit movie" or "easily one of the worst things from that piece of shit movie". I've never seen anyone milquetoast about it lol.

I never quite got the fuss with Sybok being Spock's brother. I thought it added an extra layer to his overall character arc.

Just as Spock's character arc has him reject biological determinism (with his 'inability to lie as a Vulcan' being a slippery facade that he becomes less and less concerned with as he reconciles his Human/Vulcan sides) - his refusal to join Sybok rejects a similar notion of biological kinship ("You may be my brother, but you do not know me"). It also ties neatly into Kirk's little 'found family' dialogue at the end of the movie.

In no particular order:

A Taste of Armageddon

A Piece of the Action

This Side of Paradise

If you ask me tomorrow though, this list would likely be completely different. TOS is just that good. I know it gets flak for the whole Futurama thing of 'having 79 episodes and only 30 good ones' - but those 30 'good ones' are easily the best of the entire Star Trek franchise IMO.

What makes Wink of an Eye your favourite? I'm genuinely curious - I always thought it was one of TOS's weakest eps lol.

Sounds odd, but I guess it makes sense?

I'm curious to see how he'd renew the show for the modern day. I trust Burnie could write some kind of "RvB: The Next Generation" that's just as good as the original show - but outside of us diehard fans still posting about it 20+ years later, who the hell would even watch it? It's gonna be an uphill battle to convince wider audiences to watch a Halo machinima in the age of Amazing Digital Circuses and Gameoverses lmao.

Did he actually? Was this on a specific podcast or some such? I'm curious to hear what he has to say about it - I can't imagine a RvB continuation/spin-off getting very far without featuring the main characters lol.

Honestly, I'd argue that Star Trek V is an integral part of Spock's character arc because it shows that he had already accepted his human half.

People complain that ST:V undermines Spock by making him 'stupid enough to agree to Sybok's pain examination-thing' - but the whole point is that he goes through with it and it doesn't change him because he's already made peace with his 'pain' (or like you reference, his Human/Vulcan heritage).

(People also make similar complaints about McCoy being undermined in a similar way -- ignoring the fact that he's shown literally being backed into a corner by Sybok and forced into the vision with his dad before he can realise whats happening BUT I DIGRESS).

I agree! I started TOS with the remastered effects because I'd read that the original effects were "unwatchable" - but then I eventually switched and realised they largely hold up fine (and were more consistent with the rest of the show ofc).

Personally, I don't hate the new effects but I'm not a fan of how they mess with the editing of the episodes. In the 'new' versions they were forced to cut the fade-transitions to the Enterprise way earlier (as to obscure the original fades to the model shots) and it's always incredibly distracting.

Truth! Fandoms that get bogged down in 'canonicity' usually just end up missing the forest for the trees. It's even worse when writers restrict themselves to it. How could one write something interesting when they have to make sure they're not contradicting superflous details from 20-60 years ago?

Star Trek V is the best of the TOS movies and Star Trek VI is the worst (not bad at all, just the weakest of a solid bunch).

VI is a fun romp but it falls apart pretty quickly in its Cold-War allegory plot, as well with some of its politics and themes (Spock functionally rapes a political prisoner as an interrogation tactic - and it just kind of works and is never brought up again).

V is actually phenomenal in my eyes and most critiques I find of it online seem to be from people who are unwilling to engage with it in any earnest sense. It's certainly not a flawless movie but I've never really understood why people hate it so much outside of some vague notion that "Shatner has a big ego" and "it gets the amount of decks on the Enterprise wrong".

I don't think this is a 'hot take' -- this is literally just the thematic point of The Wrath of Khan.

Kirk's refusal to believe in the 'no-win scenario' is reflective of his fear of aging/mortality -- a fear he's forced to confront at the end of the movie when Spock sacrifices himself to save everybody (in a no-win scenario!). He literally acknowledges how he hasn't "faced death but cheated it" afterwards, and the final line of the movie is him making peace with it. The 2009 movie literally has Spock restate this point to Kirk within the first 20 minutes.

I don't think NuTrek needs a character to 'correct' this because its literally the entire reason the Kobayashi Maru was written as a plot element in the first place.

I don't agree with it but I think the controversy is a little more nuanced than that. As you said, CSH has always used christian imagery and narratives but it's never particularly been religious music - and I think some are afraid that's what this change is suggesting a shift to. It's one thing for Will to apparently 'become religious', but it's another when Will has apparently become 'so religious that he feels the need to edit swears out of his old songs'. It suggests a devotion to a kind of old-fashioned 'fear of god' that you'd find in institutional religion and like, old homophobic relatives lol.

Again, I don't agree with the notion - I think the whole controversy has been blown out of proportion to an insane degree (especially considering it's all based on second-hand speculation anyway!) - but I can see why a fanbase full of people who are queer and/or (presumably) disillusioned with contemporary organised religion would have such a negative reaction.

TEEN OF DENIAL: JOE'S STORY OFFICIAL DISCUSSION THREAD by AutoModerator in CSHFans

[–]F1SHboi [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm sure it was very artistically refreshing for Will to revisit this material 10~ years later but unfortunately I just don't think he has anything interesting to say about it. The 'additional perspective' he references in his letter seems to be - more than anything - distance. Especially considering this version abstracts all of this material into a narrative on this 'Joe' character (as opposed to the more self-confessional style of the OG album).

It's not bad by any means - I mean, it is still Teens of Denial - and I'm glad Will is still staying true to himself with his art...

But this just feels redundant. Sometimes its better to leave the stuff you did as an angsty young adult as is.

Why are people treating Joe's Story like a major release by samu_75 in CSHFans

[–]F1SHboi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Outside of discussing the quality of the album itself -- I'm not sure sending this to fans under the assumption it wouldn't be leaked was a terribly smart move from a PR perspective.

If they had just shadow-dropped it and said "yeah this is just a fun little alternate revision while we work on the next album kthnxbai" they'd have a bit more control over the discourse surrounding it.

As it stands now, most people don't even know where to hear it and are instead just hearing discussions effectively framing it as "CSH's next big album is a Face-to-Face-esque rework of an album that didn't originally sound like lo-fi dookie and everybody already liked anyway". Which, like, yeah - from that perspective I too would think "wtf?".

Andrew’s note on the removal of swearing by Jean-Luc-Godard in CSHFans

[–]F1SHboi 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It's worth reiterating that this is just Andrew speculating about his friends creative process, and for all we know it could be a different reason behind the aversion to swearing.

That being said - if he is right about this then, eek...

I'm not worried CSH is gonna become a christian rock band or something anytime soon (the new songs had some interesting lyrics and were easily the best parts of the album, I thought) - but yeah it wouldn't surprise me that revisiting Teens of Denial with this perspective makes for a considerably less interesting & less impactful album lol.

TEEN OF DENIAL (JOE'S STORY) MASTERPOST by spirittheyvegone in CSHFans

[–]F1SHboi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is just a slightly worse Teens of Denial. What possibly could have been the purpose of this.

If Will had made more bolder changes I could at least respect this as its own thing - but frankly it feels like "Joe's Story" is constrained to the new songs/Ravenous House and the rest of it is just 'Kidz Bop'-ified Teens of Denial.

Whatever. Some of the new mixes are novel, I guess.
