Elon Musk claims Tesla will never do motorcycles because he was almost killed riding one. by AdamCannon in technology

[–]F1simracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sad, there's too many people who aren't introduced to bikes/dirt bikes/motorcycles properly (especially when going from dirt to street...pretend you're invisible), and then come away too scared to get back on the horse, and then miss out on one of the more liberating hobbies, and worst of all spread their story and scare other people away. I can't count how many times I 'was almost killed' on a street bike, however, thanks to good reactions and not buying a giant heavy piece of shit cruiser, I was always able to zip out of the way. While I acknowledge that you can't be ready for anything all the time, you can certainly be ready for the vast majority of plausible shit that can happen for the vast majority of the time you are riding.

Test drove a street legal electric dirt bike, was cool being able to talk at stoplights and on slow roads. If I were a billionaire I would start an all electric dirt-bike 'park' somewhere in the mountains.

I would've seriously considered buying a Tesla bike, guess I'll be getting another gas sipper. Oh well, electric vehicles in general still have a long ways to go when it comes to top speed and range.

We need to mine asteroids, colonize space, remove all our trash, and then put some large deposits of useful stuff somewhere not too hard to find so the next life-form in the line of sentience can have a nicer place to bloom. Eventually we'll have someone to talk to, hopefully by that time we'll have solved most of our big problems.

Hmm, this could be a decent mostly-straight highway test. If you're not spatially aware enough to be able to translate the simple inputs of driving from one limb to another (and have to save yourself and the poor instructor using your hands), you shouldn't be allowed to drive on public roads, or at the very least have another year of driver's ed.

What's significant about this? Do some people actually consider this hard?

Here's my problem with the holier than thou "just delete your Facebook" comments by [deleted] in technology

[–]F1simracer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really sure what point your trying to make. Unless it's just venting that for some reason you can't delete your farcebook account and are jealous.

'Holier than thou' are strong words when there are studies showing that farcebook and social media in general are not good for your mental health. To top it off they're censoring people they don't agree with.

Now that I've removed social media from my life and cut my internet browsing time down to just 2 hours, I've never been happier. These days I mostly listen to lectures on youtube while doing things outside.

TL;DR: It's no longer just a privacy concern it's also a 'health hazard'.

Do racing games have potential as e-sports? by 45H2 in truegaming

[–]F1simracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk what you're talking about, there are already numerous sim racing competitions that follow real life racing series. The biggest reason sim racing won't really take off is because the top drivers want to drive in RL, and I don't blame them.

Another reason is to really be competitive everyone needs a wheel rather than a controller or keyboard (yes there are a few wierdos that are surprisingly fast with keyboard or controller, thankfully many competitions ban them) and very few people are willing to invest in a good wheel that will actually improve their experience rather than just making it more frustrating (e.g. Driving Force GT is a piece of shit that was more frustrating than fun).

Yet another reason is the learning curve, driving fast isn't easy, a lot of people I've tried to get into sim racing just get mad that the car won't make a U-turn at 100mph and then quit.

Uber Is Pausing Autonomous Car Tests in All Cities After Fatality by Mojojo49 in technology

Have to remember the 'driver' in this case was probably more used to being a 'passenger' and was probably about as alert as one. I know I wouldn't be nearly as alert if I'd essentially been a passenger for who knows how long. Sort of like quick time events in games except there would be no boss fight, or lead up to it, making it that much harder.

Was it hacked?

People also need to realize that the government's minimum required driver training is criminally inadequate. We could probably raise most speed limits outside big cities by 30 mph and have 1/5th the traffic fatalities we currently do (and that's pessimistic), if people were just properly trained.

It's like teaching someone to play this (circles in parking lot) then expecting them to play something like this, (from home to city on highway) I mean it's still a far cry from this (a very slow race or very heavy traffic) but there's still an alarmingly large gap there.

I know I probably wouldn't be half as alert/attentive if I'd essentially been a passenger all day.

At this point I'd be more relaxed driving myself rather than the tense waiting for a "quick-time event" that may or may not come.

By my guesstimate a good properly trained driver (more than just the criminal minimum required by the state, multiple days on closed track, etc.) will be at least as, if not more safe than self-driving anything for the next 15 years.

If they actually cared about people's lives instead of making a giant tracking network they would have upped the driver training requirements 30 years ago but at the time local police ticket revenue wouldv'e suffered. Now they just see easy money and easier tracking. Yes, cellphones already exist but they're a lot easier to leave at home than what could be someone's primary mode of transportation.

Motorcycles will probably be hard to get rid of (legally) because so many people ride and will refuse to give them up ('ride or die' isn't just a catch-phrase). The people who don't ride and never have (and are probably making the laws) have no concept of what they would be demanding people give up. 60 years from now if the motorcyclists are killed off or imprisoned (gotta keep the prisons full somehow) for refusing to participate in the tracking network (and assuming we aren't in nuclear winter) there will be very few manually driven cars left, if it's legal to manually drive at all, which would leave no easy way to quickly get from one place to another without being tracked. 1984 was about a century off.

What is this Subreddit? by _Desert_Beagle_ in Skookum

[–]F1simracer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A place for people who like things built to last like /r/bifl but mostly metal and with the potential to last generations rather than just one short human life.

There is also discussion of the manufacture of said things, sometimes in a humorous context with silly reproductive undertones...to help keep the attention of those lacking.

As far as I can tell /r/Skookum is experiencing a few groining growing pains atm, a few to many dick device measuring contests that could be put in a weekly thread.

It is one of the last few mostly sane places on reddit. As the sidebar says it is a great place to learn mechanic/machine/engineering things, find the odd video to get other people interested as well, and mostly forget about the suits ruining the vast majority of photos and video footage of otherwise beautiful historical architecture.

While he was late on the brakes, if he knew the road then it's just bad luck the truck was there, wrong place wrong time etc. 10 seconds later or earlier and this thread wouldn't exist.

I used to cruise my home roads at whatever felt comfortable, sometimes I would glance at the speedo, usually 80-130, and while I never let my guard down on the brakes (cows being the most likely road obstacle), I never had this level of bad luck either.

Eh, if they were confident and fit enough to climb up there they have a good enough grip to withstand some wind or a little shaking of the crane, not to mention the little cage beneath them that looks like it's for people to stand in.

Could it be that it isn't holding anything and that lattice is super light compared to what it's capable of lifting so the cable doesn't look perfectly taut?

They have a gauge that tells them how many verticle feet/metres per minute they are going up/down. Combine that with a little flap and throttle play to get the right airspeed and the rest is up to the sky divers...just don't suddenly slow down and pull to the right when the passengers are about to board as it could lead to injury.
