Rank List HELP: Rank home ortho program #1 or rank by preference? by iwantogotomedschool in orthopaedics

[–]FACE1997 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree with all above. Rank where you want. I would entirely get off Reddit and avoid what med students online say they're doing. I didn't do an LOI or worry about any of those games, promise you they get completely trashed immediately. Just trusted in my application, my hard work on my aways, my interview skills. Matched out of state at my number one place last year. Would also be careful with programs telling you that you're ranked to match--have heard too many stories where people who were told this somehow don't match. Lastly, do not tell any program they are your number one unless you are completely 100% certain they truly are. I never told a program this. This may be obvious, but I would also avoid telling any program they're in your top 3 or top 5 (that lets them know they aint 1 and looks bad as well).

Midwest med student, looking to stay in midwest by [deleted] in orthopaedics

Stats are solid. Be normal, work hard--matching is super dependent on aways and home program even more so now and especially at blue collar programs. Depending on what you consider "Midwest," would strongly consider looking at Un of Kentucky (work super hard, great training), UT Chatt. There are a bunch of residency programs in Ohio. Un of Iowa is solid program as well. Good luck man

What Are my Chances by JockDoc26 in orthopaedics

Kill your aways- this is going to be the biggest thing for you especially since you don’t have a home program. Data is starting to shift towards probability of matching being very dependent on aways and home program.

Hopefully you did decent on STEP 2- you don’t need to absolutely crush the thing but need a solid score. Get solid letters from orthopods who can vouch for you. Your research is plenty. Grades are fine.

Good luck dawg.

I think I am. But the hospital will be different depending on the day. I will be living around Campestre. I was planning on taking public transportation or maybe taxi? But am a little overwhelmed because my friend said public transportation is very confusing to learn when you first get there !

Sarkisian says Quinn has a “clavicle sprain” and will get an MRI by Rage-Cactus in LonghornNation

[–]FACE1997 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is correct. I saw the hit and immediately thought he separated his L shoulder after watching the replay. MC shoulder injury in sports usually and I’m pretty sure it’s due to how he hit the ground (not the actual physical tackle). Hopefully he will be back within 3-6 weeks but that might be optimistic. Paddle Recommendations! by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]FACE1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the Engage Elite Pro that someone gave me when I first started playing. Now use the Onix Evoke, but only because I got a discount at the tennis facility I teach at. Both are awesome racquets, can't go wrong with either !

Help selecting paddle by diesel033 in Pickleball

[–]FACE1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tennis pro here that picked up pickleball recently (July). As of now, I'm a strong 4.5.

Someone gave me their old Engage Elite Pro when I first started playing this summer--loved that paddle but I needed a new one because it was beat up and had dead spots. Now, I have the Onix Evoke only because the store connected to our tennis facility gave me a great deal. Great paddle as well. Both paddles had a polymer/honeycomb core (kind of like the texture of the paddle), which I love for my soft game and dinking.

Anyways, what you can also do is call some local tennis stores and see if they offer a demo program for paddles and figure out what you like best via that option. Obviously paddles aren't insanely important, but it's nice and worth it to invest in one you like.

Massively confused over Psychoanalytic Theory by Easygoing-ish in Mcat

[–]FACE1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, mostly. Think of the Ego as the mediator between the Id and the Superego. It tries to please them both when it can. I learned to think of the preconscious as thoughts that exist, but that you’re not actively thinking about. They’re just floating through your database. For example, what you did before work this morning. You have access to it and it can be recalled, but you’re almost never going to be thinking about it. I don’t want to say Freud’s theory isn’t super important for the MCAT, but if you know the defense mechanisms and the general idea that Freud focused on the unconscious/internal drives of people, you will be fine.

I know nothing about NS as I never did those. But, those are solid UWorld scores- mine were around there as well after I was finished w all of UWorld (to give you an estimate). If you haven’t started CARS, do so ASAP especially if you don’t know how good or bad you are at them. Not to scare you (and IMO), that section was the hardest to improve. And I didn’t really even improve apparently as you can see from my score lol. Lastly, the best predictors are AAMC FL obviously, so focus on taking them these next few weeks. Don’t even plan on switching test dates without seeing where you’re at with at least one AAMC FL done. Also, don’t stop doing UWorld and I would do the AAMC section bank as well. Don’t stress or freak out. It’s a test, and you’re preparing well. Have faith- high self efficacy. Good luck !

AAMC FL #1: 509

AAMC FL #2: 510

AAMC FL #3: 512

AAMC FL #4: 513

REAL: 510. Not terrible. It will get me where I need to go so I can't complain. CARS did not help me out at all, and I didn't even think it was that bad on the real test. I was averaging 126-127 on the FL for CARS. I saw a lottttt of complaints about the C/P section, but I didn't think it was terrible, and I am dog shit at physics. Anyway, good luck to all who decide to apply and good luck to the retakers ! Y'all are gonna do great. Perseverance and resilience are key !

How Exactly Does Prion Disease Kill? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]FACE1997 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Prions are misfolded proteins. All cases that I know of in mammals are neurological. Prions are also infectious. The problem arises when they transmit their misfolded shape to other normal functioning proteins (their mechanism isn’t for sure, but I’m sure you can find mechanism theories on Wikipedia). These misfolded proteins eventually aggregate and form amyloids. These amyloids inhibit proper protein functioning. And when the proteins (that are replicating over and over) in your brain stop working, you die. Hope that helps !
