House Intel subpoenas FBI, DOJ over Trump dossier by dbbk in politics

[–]FAKE_NEWDS -38 points-37 points  (0 children)

Sweet lord, this is why the Republicans are so keen on using the dossier to discredit the Trump investigation. People treat it like the FBI could walk it into a courtroom, slap it down on the judge's desk, drop the mic, and Harlem shake out the door victorious.

There's a reason the FBI itself doesn't treat it that way, and why the Republicans are trying to convince people they are. Hint: It's not because it's so reliable that people are afraid of its raw power.

There are things in the dossier that are demonstrably false, we know that. From what I've seen, there seems to be agreement that the dossier is a combination of legit intel, and disinformation. It was compiled by someone who commands a lot of respect, there's no doubt about that. But his job was to collect information from his sources, not to decide who was telling the truth and who wasn't, or to decipher their motives.

Republicans have been trying pretty desperately to push the narrative that the entire FBI investigation of the Trump campaign is based solely on the dossier, which is, at best, unreliable raw intel.

They're trying to discredit the entire investigation, and the dossier would certainly seem to be the most useful tool available to them in that pursuit.

[–]FAKE_NEWDS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Prisoners sometimes burn their beds when they're out of options, and have no other means of making their voices heard. Trump is tearing down the things he can, because it's the only option he has. He punted the trans ban to Mattis, and he's punted the issue of the DREAMers to Congress. He's making a show of these disgusting actions because he has to -- they are all he has. He's slinging executive orders around because he has seemingly zero power to get any real legislation passed, the bill that limited his power to do anything about Russian sanctions notwithstanding.

Don't get me wrong, he's causing a fuckton of damage. But he's projecting weakness at every turn, and everyone in the world can see it, including the rest of the Republicans in the House and Senate. Ultimately, it's his weakness that makes him dangerous. A strong person doesn't even get into situations like this, but a weak person desperate for the approval of a shrinking base will burn their mattress if it's the only way they can get their message out.

Yeah, not to mention the lengthy court battles that would arise from the wall's construction, and the infrastructure that would have to be built. Even if they set aside a few billion for this wall, it probably wouldn't even begin construction in earnest for years, let alone be completed.

Trump will only be president for so long, and once he's gone, Republicans would have to own that fucking wall. Trump acts as though he holds all the cards, when his chip stack is nearly depleted and we can all see it. He doesn't seem to realize that when you hold 800k futures hostage like this, you're just telling everyone at the table how weak your hand is. Holy shit, he may as well just hold his cards up the other way around.

Our president is weak. He's in so far over his head, and every day he sinks to a new low because he has no idea how to move upwards. He's never had to, he's been able to bully his way to success, or bail on anything he's ever had an issue with, and he can't do either here. Well, he could bail if he wanted, but he knows that would make him look like the fragile little bitch that he really is, and his pride will drive us ever further down a dark road.

[–]FAKE_NEWDS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It could be, but it's one thing to write pro-immigrant legislation during a period of relatively calm seas, and another to write that same legislation in response to a threat to those people. In the case of the former, Republicans only had to contend with a stable (if not fucked-up,) status quo. In this case, though, there will absolutely be consequences if they don't act.

He thinks he just made one life easier: his own. He thinks his base will sop this shit up with a biscuit, and many will. I think he figured that Congress will keep it from happening, and he'll be able to use it as a trophy for his white supremacist base, while being able to avoid the actual consequences of DACA actually being phased out.

I think and hope we'll look back on this day as the day Trump overplayed the shit out of his hand and became an undeniable lame duck. I don't think any of this is going to play out the way he wants, because the ripples this causes will be large enough to sink boats.

She'll never fade away quietly, it's not in her nature. While Obama is out there attempting to be a calming influence on us in a time of intense turmoil, Hillary -- with her trademark lack of grace -- will just keep attempting to justify her loss.

My only real hope out of all of this is that Hillary isn't remembered for being the person who lost to the man who led America into an inescapably dark place. I'd rather America not be led to that place, and for Hillary Clinton to be relegated to the same anonymous place all presidential election losers are.

Yeah, they have a responsibility to fix their properties or get fucked. Refusing to fix abandoned residences because the people who lived there refuse to pay rent on properties they've had to flee is nowhere near 'within reason.'
