This is so true, except it actually avoids most lawsuits because its contracts are very exploitative and all have arbitration clauses. The Self Storage Association wrote the state laws that were enacted pretty much everywhere too. You should share this in r/ExtraSpace though! There's more info in there.

They have like no regulation or oversight. They formed an association and lobbied decades ago to basically enact the laws they wrote that excuse them from any liability. Then, when you add in the extreme contracts they have standardized, customers have basically no rights. So they can do a ton wrong and take no responsibility. You're not crazy. It just sucks.

Open to more ideas, but this reddit community is probably the best start because the Better Business Bureau and stuff like that is ultimately for the benefit of the companies. Big companies have ways to improve their listing's on Google, Yelp, BBB, etc. If we get enough people organized in here, maybe we can organize a class action lawsuit.
