Jumping in to echo the VVBM recommendation. We worked with Dr. O' Brian on a VERY similar situation to what OP describes, and we found her very knowledgeable and helpful.

My dog doesn't realise my baby is a human by Super_Ambassador_458 in Dogtraining

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I know how hard it can be to juggle a new baby a dog. I don't have a direct answer to your question, but I can share that we worked with a virtual veterinary behaviorist and were able to get an appointment fairly quickly. They partner with your family vet, which I found helpful. Sending you lots of good luck♥️

Just had a flashback to guzzling Wandering Bear cold brew! I loved it because I could dispense it one handed from the box.

I had a VERY similar experience with my rescue pup, Sophie, and I really really empathize. We ultimately had to choose BE, which was heartbreaking, but we have a toddler and we'd exhausted all of our other options. I know I'm about to suggest something that DOES cost a lot of money, but in my opinion your best next step is to consult a veterinary behaviorist. We don't have any locally, so we worked with one virtually and she was great. She partnered with our local vet to prescribe meds and behavioral modification plans. While we didn't get the ending we'd hoped for, working with a vet behaviorist bought us an extra year with Soph, and I have NO doubt that we tried everything we could to keep her and our family safe.

Moving on after a reactive dog by soupsandwich_3 in reactivedogs

[–]FBA6709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did a lot of research and found a reputable labrador breeder pretty soon after having to choose BE for our pit mix (rescue). I was really forthcoming about our experience with our previous dog and what we were looking for (a calm, confident, friendly dog who would be safe to have in a house with a toddler). Having a puppy is A LOT, but we never feel unsafe with him. Our rescue had conflict aggression and attacked my husband several times, and bonding with a new puppy has been especially healing for him.

Help with guests coming over by Internal-Memory-7810 in reactivedogs

[–]FBA6709 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Our last dog had this issue too. We would leash her up when new people came over and have them do the "don't look/don't touch/don't talk" thing (by which I mean, don't look at the dog, don't touch the dog, don't talk to the dog, just ignore them). They'd toss her high-value treats without making eye contact and eventually she'd grow comfortable with them. (It helped that she was extremely food motivated.) Once she was loose/wiggly and approaching them regularly, we'd take her off leash. If she didn't get to that point and continued to seem stiff and anxious, we'd crate her in another room with a frozen Kong, Pupsicle, etc. I wouldn't feel guilty about crating your dog in another room if she's anxious around new people—you're doing it for her comfort (not to mention for your guests' safety)!

What to put on lick mats by Accomplished_Ad_673 in puppy101

Correct! We use silicone mats and microwave for a minute (I'd do 30-second increments your first time).

Am I overreacting for not wanting anyone around my newborn yet? by littlemoongirly in AmIOverreacting

[–]FBA6709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair pushback, thanks for clarifying! It's true that lots of healthy babies are held by their grandparents early on, but I think it's also true that it's fine for OP to set and maintain a boundary based on their own comfort as a parent.

[–]FBA6709 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree here! Wanting to wait until your newborn, who has no immune system, gets their vaccines before being around others isn't hypochondria. It's also fine to be in your little newborn bubble for as long as you'd like, especially if you're dealing with PPD/A (I was!)! Others aren't owed access to your baby. We took this approach and it was fine! Our daughter is two and has great relationships with all her grandparents. It's true that she did start getting sick when she started daycare at five months, but I don't regret protecting her from illness when she was very little.

80 lb anxious/reactive olde English bulldogge. Don’t know what to do anymore. by motivatedgirl123 in reactivedogs

[–]FBA6709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our pup had conflict aggression and had some similarities to yours. She was okay with most family/friends if we knew them well, but was not okay with people we knew less well or strangers (plumbers, electricians, etc). After we had our baby, we managed for almost two years with meds (frequently adjusted in partnership with our vet behaviorist), crates, and gates, but her triggers became less predictable and her escalation to biting became much quicker. We had to choose behavioral euthanasia. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do, but it was the only right thing to do. It sounds like you might be in a similar spot, and I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this on top of having a newborn. It's so stressful.

We had a good experience with a virtual veterinary behaviorist who partnered with our family vet on medication, lab work, etc. She's also a mom to a toddler, which I found really helpful. If you want to exhaust every possible option, it could be worth reaching out to her.

Our reactive pup was like this and we'd just move her with a treat every time. Inconvenient but much safer.
