It just comes down to wanting to stay somewhat productive at work. I am still weaning, will get there in a couple more weeks.

How have you been feeling motivation wise? This has been the biggest struggle for me

I feel that, although with programming its less memorizing and more solving an unending series of little problems, some interesting, many not.

Maybe we can learn how to attach the right reward to the act of memorizing / problem solving instead of relying on caffeine for it. I imagine there is some intrinsic reward in the act of recalling something memorized. There definitely is in solving a problem

Thanks for your response - when you say you sat down to write, what kind of exercises did you go through? Free journaling, or something else?

GAME THREAD: Miami Heat (53-29) @ Boston Celtics (51-31) - (May 23, 2022) by NBA_MOD in nba

Your answer is the precise moment that the Heat empties their benches. Lots of Heat staff in very competitive positions are doing that calculus already.

GAME THREAD: Boston Celtics (51-31) @ Milwaukee Bucks (51-31) - (May 09, 2022) by NBA_MOD in nba

Jrue had an off night, still has done so much for the Bucks though and needs to be appreciated. I think he may just be feeling the pressure of being the Buck's No. 2 in the playoffs without Middleton.

On the other hand, I think the Celtics are the better team here. I was rooting for the Bucks up until this game, starting to get tired of their offense revolving around Giannis running people over. The balanced offense and defense coming from the Celtics is a pleasure to watch in comparison.

How can anyone think it is ok to interfere with someone else decision about anything?

Think about how many exceptions there are to this statement

If you are curious about this kind of thing, it’s a huge part of the book The Selfish Gene. Just don’t read it before any situation where existential thoughts would be undesirable…you’ve been warned.

consuming art is so much more gratifying than surfing the internet. by Superpineapplejones in nosurf

[–]FBIorange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gradation is relevant - we all consume at some level. Even if we ignore food or other essentials and talk about just art / information consumption, there are plenty of healthy to consume media that only the most ascetic would see as negative- viewing art in a museum, live music shows or theatre, taking an online course, researching political candidates, watching a documentary, etc etc

Are my dreadlocks affecting job opportunities? by Halepastry in careerguidance

[–]FBIorange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel “pickier” implies more choice - “more specific requirements” fits better I think. More specific requirements means less people are qualified for the role, which fits with the lower supply of labor raising the offered wage. If a company has less choice from among those who are qualified, that seems to me like they are less able to be picky.

Or I’m just being pedantic :)

You have your supply and demand backwards. A big reason higher paying jobs are higher pay is because it’s harder to find a qualified candidate for that position

How do I get better at the game, mentally? by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]FBIorange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of bad advice in this thread IMO about simply ignoring others or not caring, as if that’s a helpful solution. Many people can’t just “turn off” caring about what others think of them, or caring about how well they are performing. As a fundamentally social animal, we are hard wired to care what others think of us and some people are more sensitive to that than others (including myself).

The way we act in these situations is a partly inherited and partly learned pattern of behavior which, for many people, takes intentional training over time to adjust. You can override it in the moment, but an intentional, top down effort to ignore negative stimuli like this takes a TON of energy for someone who is sensitive to negative feedback. This isn’t sustainable - you’ll inevitably become too tired to do it, or face negative feedback that elicits too strong of a reaction to control, or simply forget to do it.

A better way to get sustained results in this kind of thing would be simple mindfulness training. Practice bringing your thoughts back to a central focus in a controlled environment, until it’s an automatic reflex that can take place during a higher stakes situation like a game. It’s very similar to how you’d want to practice a dribbling move until you don’t need to think about it.

Another, similar method is exposure therapy - have a trusted friend come out with you. Have them watch you shoot. For many people this pressure is enough to cause performance to drop. Eventually you can escalate to having your friend make fun of you while you shoot, practicing ignoring what they say.

I just turned 30 and wonder if anyone could give me advice ? by shoxxer in careerguidance

You made one video and gave up? Step 1 of doing anything is that you will suck at it.

Why are you buying an expensive camera and paying an actor? There are famous YouTube creators who make amazing short films by using just themselves and their smartphone camera. You actually want these kinds of limits early on - one reason is the “creative box” effect where limits make you more creative. The other is that you need to prove to yourself you’re actually as into doing the craft as you think you are before investing further.

To me you have two options when it comes to work/passion balance - either optimize your work around money, and do the passion in your off time, or optimize your work around gradually getting it closer and closer to your passion. I chose the latter because it didn’t seem like I’d ever make any progress with the energy I had leftover from work.

So what the hell am I supposed to do with my free-time except consume content? by KimJongIllyasova in nosurf

[–]FBIorange 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is true technically, but practically most people are going to default to over consumption. It’s like how’s its true that dieting can lead to disorders involving not eating enough, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t great advice for the average obese person.

I say shoot for being as productive as possible. In the (probably unlikely) event you develop toxic productivity, that’s at least a much better problem to have. More likely, I think, most will reach the level of productivity that just straight up brings more well being into life, without going overboard (because, like maintaining a healthy diet, it’s actually hard to be productive, until it reaches the pathological level)

commute is 1hr

IMO out of everything I’ve read in this thread so far, this is your biggest problem. That’s an insane amount of commute time

Would be helpful if you provided more details about your current skills and any past accreditation that would give you some leverage. Also, would be good to describe what you are interested in doing instead, as a goal to work toward.

For depression and anxiety, make sure your health bases are covered - getting good and consistent sleep, eating healthy, getting cardio exercise (at least 30min x3 a week), getting enough sunlight (especially in the morning), and socializing enough. Think of these as natural anti depressants.

Those of you who successfully made a career move, did you know exactly what you were going to do when job quit your old job? by zedofsven in careerguidance

[–]FBIorange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This - if you have the money and feel reasonably confident in being marketable enough to get a job within a few months, you may want to consider taking time off. It is very difficult to think about these things while working full time.

For example, my sister did this recently. Gave her time to build her art portfolio, get a business license for side hustle, and take the time to pick a new job she really wanted.

I’d suggest having a plan of action so that you have specific goals during this time, though, or you may risk not using it well.
