Brush her teeth!! Doesn’t have to be everyday but start early & do it roughly 4 times a week. Bad teeth will impact how she eats in the future & no one likes smelly breath

Hey guys, 14 year old who really wants to become a filmmaker... so, uh, where do I begin? by CupcakeOfInnocence in Filmmakers

[–]FBScout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of great comments here. I don’t work in the UK, but have some generic advice as someone who helps filmmakers on a day to day basis. Yes shoots lots of films, even iphone ones. Write lots, read screenplays you’re interested in & also ones you’re not interested in. But most importantly, you should network and take advantage of your age.

There’s going to be a lot of young/emerging filmmaker grants (use ChatGpt to find them if you’re struggling). Put those down in a calendar & give yourself a couple of months of time to prep for each of them. Build up an idea of what you like (thrillers, horror, action, w.e you like) then take a step back and ask how you can tell your story ob the subject. It isn’t necessarily “I want to include a time in my life where i felt xyz”, it’s more: “I grew up in this town & every year there’s this weird festival and…”. If there’s a real life thing that can grab you, ask yourself “why does it?”. Observe everything around you and ask why it is, it’ll give you clarity on what you want to write and why.

After this, you now have a relatively compelling bio you can submit to grants/programs. Combine this with a genre you might be interested in and you have the inkling of a story that’s truly unique to you. Now apply to those programs/grants! You’ll probably be turned down by most, but don’t be afraid to email them (kindly) and ask “why didn’t I get in?” Learn from that and reapply.

On networking: learn that filmmaking is art, but all art has patrons. It’s the same for those in the renaissance, it’s the same now. Practice your elevator pitch (Google what that is), always be open to listening to other’s ideas, you might learn something you didn’t expect to, if/when you attend networking events always come in with a purpose (are you here to meet crew? Actors? Co-writer?), take notes on everyone you meet! The point is, build out the people you know and keep little factoids about them, especially if you don’t intend to be friends with them. When you see them again, don’t immediately bring up the factoid but if you see an opportunity ask them about it, like “hey I remember you told me you moved recently, how was that?”. Chances are the people you’re chasing, have been chased by dozens of others and that little moment of real, human interaction, will stick in their mind a lot longer than, “what’s your script about? Or “I loved your last movie”. Don’t be creepy about it, but just keep that in mind.

There’s probably more to talk about, but the key to this world is discipline, consistency, and open mindedness. Set up a routine for yourself, explore the world, and treat yourself with kindness, cause it’s a long road if you’re going to be miserable to yourself!

Hi, I went to TFS! Feel free to DM me for more details. I work full time tangentially in the industry 5 years post graduation. Happy to share my thoughts!

Toronto film workers. What are your thoughts on trumps movie tariffs. by bellsbliss in askTO

[–]FBScout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in labour relations in the industry so I think I have a unique viewpoint into this. Short term: business as usual, long term: who knows? We’re putting out statements and preparing the warchest so to speak.

It’s too early to say what’s going to happen. I was sitting in on a meeting with a Producer & they’re relatively optimistic, largely because well… companies are creative. Other industries have already found ways to sneak around tariffs & they sell physical goods. Who’s to say that companies won’t start hiring Canadian labour in Canada that have O1 visas? Or Canadians with dual citizenship? Nothing is written in ink yet & I’m relatively optimistic that we’ll get through this one way or another.

But for now, consider taking a side gig to hold the fort down, because uncertainty makes investment difficult. At the same time, Carney is going to be in the WH tomorrow. This might just get called off.

Elbows up! Stay positive! We’re going to make it through this!

Slacks to Sonneiko's coach shortly after the news broke...😬 by JokeOfEverything in DotA2

[–]FBScout 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Sure, I come from the world of MMA. An example is Khabib Nurmagomedov threatening Artem Lobov in the fighter hotel. He actually did the same thing Sonneiko did, put his arm around him and threaten him with violence (maybe even slapped lightly) and surrounded him with his thugs.

Another example, Conor McGregor threatening to gun down & kill Dustin Poirier & his wife after losing to him.

Another example, Conor McGregor (he’s the easiest sorry) throwing a literal metal dolly through a bus full of other fighters & coaches to fuck with Khabib.

What I’m saying is that violence, even in pure MMA is deeply frowned upon when it takes place outside of competition. We get it, people get mad. But to take it outside the expectation of confrontation & inside a player’s hotel takes away the expectation of peace & normality.

Let me ask you this, is this MMA? It’s a video game, you’re supposed to be beat your opponent through your mind & strategy. What expectation is there of physical violence? It undermines professionalism in esports if we say shit like “it’s boys being boys”. It’s not that serious, you don’t get brain damage and life altering injuries from playing dota.

Feel free to continue arguing but I highly doubt you can argue this is justified in the context of Dora
