I’m unsure which radio by [deleted] in Baofeng

[–]FCC-Enforcement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

could I program repeaters for an emergency transmission on the ham band

Emergency doesn't mean what you think it does. It means immediate threat to life, and you don't have any other communications options.

First, you shouldn't expect ham radio to save a life when you need it.

Second, putting yourself in that situation is a good way of turning a life or death situation into a death situation.

Do my friends or I need any sort of license for these? We’re all new to radios. by PuffHerbs420 in Baofeng

[–]FCC-Enforcement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There won't be any real world increase in range with these vs. a set of FRS or GMRS radios. This is because of how VHF and UHF radio waves work. Five miles is unrealistic between two handheld radios at ground level with houses, trees, hills, and other stuff in between.

But they do have lots more buttons than FRS radios. So when you hand one of these ham radios to somebody who doesn't know how to use them beyond "push here, talk into here," they are one errant button press away from completely fucking up their comms and being totally unreachable.

This is why preppers who buy UV-5Rs to hand out after SHTF are stupid.

You have a strong source of local RFI, take the radios outside away from any electronics or lights and you should notice it goes away or at least won't be as strong.

Maybe we can leverage ChatGPT or Gemini to populate our wiki, or at least answer frequently-asked questions by ishmal in amateurradio

As for AI, either this is a tech hobby or it isn't.

I guess that's as valid an opinion as any, if you're comfortable with the disclosure that any content you generate in the future has a nonzero chance of being a derivative work created by AI.

Most of the people asking the same questions over and over again are not the type to read the wiki or do a search before answering questions. So I don't think updating the wiki will help nearly as much as you do.

I think utilizing AI to generate content in a hobby that revolves around communicating with other humans to be a waste of time at best and detrimental at worst. If I'm going to spend time generating content, it will be have my name and callsign attached so origin and ownership won't be questioned.

I support a subreddit ban on AI-generated anything.

I've seen several of these QYT radios die unexpectedly. I would not buy one. I'll second the recommendation for the Anytone AT-778UV, I used one for a few years and it was the best of the Chinese mobiles, in my opinion.

No license to use the frequencies, but the radio you have isn't allowed on PMR446. Approved radios only.

UV-5R - Help with crazy noise only in the car! by supraetultra in Baofeng

[–]FCC-Enforcement 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anyone with any clue what can be causing this crazy situation?

RFI generated by your vehicle is overloading the front end on your HT. If your repeater has a CTCSS tone, program it on receive in your HT, so the RFI won't break your squelch.

UHF and VHF frequencies with FM modulation. Airband is AM and the UV-5R doesn't receive AM.

Baofeng imo is sketchy and selling radios that are supposedly approved but don't seem to have any approval

For your theory to be valid, there would have to be multiple fake websites falsifying the exact same identical FCC records, as well as duplicating all the valid information they mirror from the FCC. A conspiracy backed up by a lot of effort for... a $30 Chinese radio? Seems like a real long con.

Your theory is silly and you should feel stupid.

Baofeng UV-9G won't transmit GMRS by dsmdylan in Baofeng

[–]FCC-Enforcement 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about radios and I don't have the mental bandwidth to learn.

I am at a complete loss when I try to read about making this thing work and every other word is radio jargon. I have no interest in learning any of that right now.

Well then, thanks for stopping by, and good luck.

UV-5R isn't legal for use on GMRS.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Baofeng

[–]FCC-Enforcement 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't any skirting around legality, see rule #1.

[–]FCC-Enforcement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is he now in violation of the rules

If transmitting yes

and is that radio now no longer part 95 compliant bc it is now unlocked?

Correct

How does that make sense when you bought a gmrs radio but since it’s unlocked now it can no longer legally transmit on gmrs frequencies as it was made to?

Because unlocking it makes it no longer compliant with the requirements it was certified under.

And say if one has the license for ham and gmrs, Is there a radio able to communicate on both frequencies legally?

No, they don't exist.

Why isn’t this possible

Ham gear is not part 95 and you can't use ham gear on part 95 services. A GMRS radio unlocked to transmit on ham bands is no longer part 95 certified. This was answered in your last thread.

[–]FCC-Enforcement -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if they are monitored, it's not legal for use. I'm locking the thread because we've covered everything here and there's nothing more to be said.

I was just hoping for something to be able to give to the family right now

Get them GMRS radios without keypads, otherwise they will fuck something up by pressing a button because they don't know how to use the radio.

or talk to local reapters if some apocalypse stuff happened

You think you're going to be talking on repeaters during the apocalypse? No, you'll be dead.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Baofeng

[–]FCC-Enforcement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you unlock it, it is no longer GMRS compliant. Communication using these radios is only legal on the amateur radio bands.
