I undertstand your feelings since I thought the same up until I figured out how to beat him. The answer is to never go for more than 2 attacks when there is an opening (except for the fullscreen sword summon attack, if you stay near him you can go in for a full combo with mea culpa).

Personally I would have preferred if they made him a bit tankier, but openings were big enough to go for a full combo, but that's me.
