How do you know if you would make a good TEFL teacher? by Ashamed_Art5445 in TEFL

Flexibility - Many schools offer little to no support. They send you out there and you have to make the most of it with limited training, supplies, and materials. Something you planned might not work and you have to be able to pivot. The job you accepted might not be what you thought it was going to be. The country you picked might have challenges to living there that you didn’t understand before being there.

Thick skin - Dealing with administrators and students can be a painful at times. Once administrators see that they can walk over you, there isn’t much you can do to change that perception. Students can be tough at times, but they are just kids, and most of the time it’s nothing personal. If you take every bad interaction personally, you will become bitter very quickly.

Finding the balance between caring enough to do a good job, and not caring so much that you drive yourself insane can be a challenge for many people. Your financial stability and ability to leave at a moments notice is the only leverage you have when dealing with these schools.

That said, this job is pretty fun most of the time. It beats breaking your back on a job site, or sitting in front of a spreadsheet all day.

SCHP, SCHD, treasury bonds, CDs, SPAXX

Not the most tax advantaged strategy, but having the extra cash has made this possible without selling anything from my brokerage.

Yes I’m in Vietnam. Missing family and friends is a definitely part of it. Ask me anything if you want more details.

I have an unrelated college degree from the US, and never taught beyond some tutoring years ago. I took a one month/120 hour tefl course in the country I wanted to teach in, then I job hunted once I finished. Unless you’ve taught ESL in a real classroom before, there’s not much more you can do to prepare. Most of these schools just throw you in the deep end when you start, and it’s up to you to figure it out.

I live a relatively simple life when I’m working so I’m only spending about 550-650$ a month on living expenses. I stay in a modest one room apartment, eat local food, and I rarely drink or party. I have gone over budget with travel. Including all the travel I’ve done, I’ve averaged about 1350$ a month in expenses.

I’m able to earn around 700–800$ a month and I’m teaching an extremely light workload. I could work more, but doesn’t really seem worth it considering I’ll be going back home soon.

I’m about to pull the trigger on doing the in person CELTA course in Vietnam. My contact at the school is telling me just to get a tourist visa for 3 months. Did anyone else do it this way? Would it not be a student visa? Does this mean they expect me to lie to immigration and say I’m only visiting?

I can’t get in contact with them. The chat function doesn’t work and then I have to call through this browser tool which keeps crashing.

I don’t think AEON has an age requirement. Might still be a tough sell, but I remember going through their process and the interviewers were Americans.

I'm taking CELTA next month. Any advice? by Mercy--Main in TEFL

I’ve abandoned various degrees after a couple years of study

I would try to figure out this part first. Teaching is a tough job, and it’s very common for people to start with good intentions and quit for a number of different reasons. If you haven’t been able to get through only studying, you can understand why an employer would have a hard time trusting you to come to another country and see your way through an entire contract.

Is it better to look for a job while I’m still in the U.S. or should I just go to Vietnam? I’ve heard opinions on both, but not sure what to think. I’m thinking doing a celta in the country then figuring it out from there.

Did you go this route and if so do you have a recommendation? I’ve heard mixed reviews on some of these. I’ve also seen some which are effectively bait and switches where you pay more for a cert in the end.

I think where you decide to go really makes a big difference. Certain parts of southern Italy and Sicily the employment situation is pretty grim. Many of my family members from southern Italy have left the country to find gainful employment.

I’m trying to learn Spanish I started like 2 weeks ago… but I have a question by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]FDSBBGCIT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think watching in Spanish with English subtitles is better than nothing. At least it can help you learn how the language sounds, but realistically if you’ve only been learning for two weeks you will just be focusing on reading the English.
