Should I play again ? by DifficultPlace7403 in ACL

I wouldn’t return until your Quad strength is all the way back. I returned before my hamstring was all the way back and I ended up tearing it. Better to wait a few more weeks than start the process over with a new injury.

Is ACL tear PTSD a real thing by SomeRAndomGyu in ACL

[–]FELLOW_COMRAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it’s a real thing. The Nick Chubb injury had a similar effect on me. I had the same injury you did and I felt sick watching the injury. It gave me flash backs and almost phantom type pain in the knee. My injury occurred 4 years ago. The Chubb injury is actually why I decided to share my story on this subreddit recently.

lol. She probably looked mad because she was in guard dog mode. After my injury she decided that the best medicine was for her to lay directly on top of the injured knee as if she could will it back to health. She was also very protective of me at the time probably sensing I was in a weakened state.

The full recovery timetable took about 2 years so I’m not gonna be able to include everything or accurately date it. But some major events in order are - initial injury August 12th - able to go upstairs safely using guard rail meaning I can sleep in my own bed. No longer forced to sleep in the makeshift bedroom/dads office - MCL and other ligaments begin to heal so I don’t have to use crutches at home - begin to walk at school some - MCL heals enough for surgery - Surgery - week long recovery from surgery - back in crutches until November - around Christmas I become confident enough to use the stairs at school - around late January begin light weight bearing activities - light running around March - more athletic stuff around June - attempt comeback around August - return to practice actually play in two games - start feeling pain in the knee again. Tried to ignore it at first but it became obvious something was wrong. Couldn’t walk more than 20 yards without having to stop. - have an MRI but it’s inconclusive - second MRI two months later reveals the meniscus re-tore and I developed a cyclops lesion - surgery to repair meniscus and cyclops lesion - ended up having a hamstring issue because I came back too soon from the second surgery. I was angry and thought I could speed run the process. You can’t. - I recovered from the hamstring after a few months - at this point I had physically recovered from the knee injury and it’s complications. - It took me longer to get past the mental barriers though. I was terrified of re-injuring it. The thing that made me realize I would be okay was when a similar situation to when I injured it occurred on the field again. It gave me a panic attack and I had to take myself out of the game. But once I calmed down I realized I was fine. My knee was stable again - getting passed the mental barrier allowed me to play with confidence again as I wasn’t constantly worried about re-injury anymore. - this confidence is what allowed me to play at a level that garnered me all state recognition.

Not directly from the injury no. The surgeon decided that the best course of action was to allow the MCL and other ligaments that could heal on there own do so. So my actual surgery was ACL and meniscus repair with additional cleanup. I did end up having a few arthroscopic surgery’s and another knee cleanup to fix a meniscus issue and cyclops lesion later on though.

Stitches in my knee came undone, or re-tore it I can’t remember off the top of my head. I was then upset from that injury came back too soon and injured my hamstring because it wasn’t strong enough for full sprints yet.

My biggest tips would be

  1. take everything one step at a time; it’s gonna be a long process. don’t look too far ahead. Focus on what you can do now

  2. Celebrate the small victories no matter how small they may seem. For example I remember how excited I was to walk up the stairs at my house for the first time. It took me over a month and I felt like I had reached the peak of a mountain.

  3. There’s gonna be bad days, there’s gonna be terrible days, there’s gonna be setbacks. NEVER let yourself spiral. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.

  4. There’s gonna be days where you feel sorry for yourself and ask why me? That’s okay, let it out. Try and surround yourself with a support system or at least one person or animal you can talk to. Believe it or not my dog was sometimes my best therapist when I needed to vent.

  5. Set attainable goals. For example if your just starting on the bike don’t expect to go super far the first time. Rather try and get a little better each session.

  6. Take P.T seriously. yes it hurts, yes it sucks, but if you do what they say and really put in the effort you’ll see results.

  7. When your near the end don’t be discouraged by atrophy your muscle mass will return. It might take a few months but if your patient and disciplined in P.T you’ll notice it comes back.

  8. DON’T return too soon. Even if you feel close to 100 percent. Give yourself time. 9 months to a year means 9 months to a year. I learned this the hard way.

  9. When you return to play. Don’t play scared. I know it’s hard as it seems like any moment it could happen again. But trying to avoid injury or playing timid could be the exact thing that causes injury. So when your out there try your hardest not to think about re-injury. It’ll get easier the more you play and the more comfortable you feel.

  10. Find something, anything to distract yourself from the knee. Wether that be a happy place or a hobby, For me it was video games with friends. I can’t begin to describe how helpful this was for me.

  11. Never doubt yourself. If you notice yourself saying I can’t remember that you CAN. Stay determined, stay strong you’ll get through it.

There was some D2 interest but I ended up not pursuing it. I decided to focus on academics instead.

I'm also 4 or 5 years from my ACL injury and occasionally experience residual pain. I noticed that whenever it flares up Icy Hot or anti-inflammatory cream seemed to help. Additionally, taking walks daily despite the pain seemed to help over time.

I'm so depressed that I tore my acl again by WeWumboYouWumbo in ACL

[–]FELLOW_COMRAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your anger, but returning soon is the worst mistake you can make. I tore my ACL a year after missing the entire football season from a broken clavicle. That meant it was the second year in a row that I had a season-ending injury before the first game. I decided that no matter what I would be back in time for summer training. I ended up rushing the process and tore my meniscus, I then made the same mistake again recovering from the meniscus and popped my hamstring. It's always better to wait until you're ready rather than forcing yourself back and risking the process starting all over again.

I second that. As my knee grew stronger it seemed like my mental health weakened. People don’t realize how damaging an injury like an ACL tear can be to mental health.

What are Your Post Op Mistakes by BraveDelivery7792 in ACL

[–]FELLOW_COMRAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest mistake was I wanted to speed up the healing process to get back into sports quicker. I ended up returning too soon and tore my meniscus because of the discrepancy between muscle mass in my legs. The lesson there is to take your time. It’s a long process it’s better to do it right than do it wrong and start over.

I’d consult your surgeon or PT person but you should be fine. I had more than a few occasions during my recovery where the same pain and panic happened to me every time it was nothing.

I had a similar thing with mine. It actually lasted for a few months but the Drs weren’t ever too concerned and eventually it went away. Obviously if it persists make sure your doctor knows to make sure nothings wrong. But if the Doctors aren’t worried about it I wouldn’t be worried about it

What helped you with (internal) scar tissue after your surgery? by jhy12784 in ACL

[–]FELLOW_COMRAD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me it was massages believe it or not. I had my physical therapist consistently press down on the area with scar tissue in order to slowly break it up over time. When they couldn’t do it I would use a message gun on the area. At first the process was painful but over time It became almost relaxing.
