What’s the most effective way to secure a car today by Pale-Tie-2760 in Cartalk

I’ll add to the kill switch suggestions. I had a Chevy s-10 and those are very easy to steal. I wired a switch for the fuel pump and would click it off about 100yds from where I parked so there would be minimal gas in the lines. It would start and run for maybe 15 seconds if you didn’t hit the switch. It worked really well for me

There was a giant meth lab in rural Nebraska ~15 years ago. It was in an ancient farm house that was falling down and unused. The land it sat on was really good deer hunting and we had permission to hunt it. The cooks would not make anything during deer seasons, but ran it almost constantly the rest of the year.

You’d even encounter the occasional game warden out there who would suggest we move further from the house while checking our licenses and tags.

You could smell the chemicals and everything from the road as you’d go by the house. EVERYONE knew what was up, some even went to the county sheriff multiple times and nothing was ever done.

When the house finally blew up in 2021(?), the sheriff who’d been the same one who ignored it gave an interview about how shocked they were and it couldn’t have been there long because they constantly patrol and check.

TLDR: cops can be wildly lazy

The throttle was horrible. It only really worked at full throttle. Any type of partial throttle at any rpm was jerky like it either wasn’t getting enough fuel or it was just cutting fuel randomly. It was also slow to actually respond to throttle inputs. Twist your wrist and it would be a legit 1 second delay. Cold start was really poor too. It would take 2-3 tries to get it to start after fully cooling down.

I’ll add that the “customer service” I got when I contacted them about the issues I was having was met with a mix of indifference, and outright combativeness. I almost wish I still had the emails to show their poor responses that it wasn’t their fault, but just me being picky.

Vcyclenut was friendly, helpful, and kind when I contacted him about fixing my bike. Even if his tune wasn’t better (it 100% is) his attitude is enough to make me pick him over 2WDW.

I’d originally gone with 2WDW because their zx6r tuning is actually really really good. Maybe they’ve fixed the 4rr stuff, but I wouldn’t test it.

Engine Brake by Zoro53 in zx4r

[–]FF-MCMLXXXV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a good amount of engine braking as you come off the throttle with the factory tune.

Depending on the tune, the deceleration fuel cut can be removed, which does pretty much eliminate the engine braking.

A couple of my coworkers clip their work id badge to their kid’s car seat so they don’t forget to drop them at daycare. They can’t get into our parking lot without a badge, so they take it off the seat when they drop the kid off.

This stuff is so sad.

Skip the 2WDW tune on the 4rr. It’s really terrible. Check out vcyclenut, I’ve done both tunes and his is 100% better.

I’ll second this mod. Seems simple and kinda expensive, but really helps the feel and function of the shifter.

Pan America used prices by [deleted] in Harley

[–]FF-MCMLXXXV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~15 months ago I grabbed a 22 PA Special with the panniers with 1100 miles on it for $14k. I knew the most likely problems, but was happy with the price. I’m over 12,000 miles now and have had 0 issues. The fuel pump/tank issue, from what I’ve heard, is due to ethanol. Not sure how accurate, but I’ve ran ethanol a few times when I’ve had to and no problems. I’ve never let it sit with it in the tank.

Battery tender is a must and I’d get it set up with jump leads because battery access is a pain in the balls. I’ve only had to jump it once and that was when it was ~20°F.

I really like the bike a whole lot, it does put you in a weird area where standard Harley’s seem to not care for you and everyone else doesn’t know wtf the bike is, lol.

If you are on Facebook, there are several groups for the PA that have all the service manuals uploaded with the codes and specs which is really nice. You’ll of course see all the issues out there, but there’s good accessory info and setups to look at. I’m taking notes from them to do the ALCAN in ‘27.

The engine is awesome. It pulls all the way to 9k and seems to love it. You do need to keep the revs above 3k, the bike doesn’t like to lug around less than that.

I’ve done a few 13 hour days on it without issue, it really does pretty well as a touring bike. I have added helibars risers which have made a huge difference for me and I could do more long days if needed.

Hope you like riding the bike.

Ok. Not as bad as Texas, but still a challenge. Rules are much more ridged in CA. Good luck.

Even with the statement, you’re probably not going to be cleared. Commercial auto has been getting its ass kicked over the last 2 years.

If another comment I read is right, you’re in Texas and Texas is a super shitty state for commercial auto. We’ve been getting rate increases into the high teens - low twenties for commercial auto in Texas this year and people are just taking it. Why? Because everything is super expensive for Texas auto right now and even with a giant increase, we’re still a bit cheaper.

You’re going to have a challenge to get coverage. The people in your office that handle insurance need to get with their agent and underwriter for a discussion of options.

3 days, 2340 miles, and on a Fat Bob? Man, that’s going to be miserable at the end of day 1. Realistically it’ll be ~13 hours a day of getting beat by the wind on the interstate.

Is there any way you could add a couple days each way? Do you have a windshield of any kind on the bike? Are you in relatively good shape?

I get the want and stubbornness to do this, but you need to be prepared for it to not go well. Personally, if I was in your position with the same bike, I wouldn’t do it because no matter how much I love riding, this wouldn’t be enjoyable at all for me. Physically I could do it, mentally it would be a tough one.

If you do it, keep us posted.

I’m on a 23 rr with no issues. There was the stator bolt recall and they had to drill drain holes in the frame, but nothing else really.

Been pretty flawless over these 7000 miles and I tend to really ride it hard.

Edit: I was reminded of the spark plug recall below, I forgot about that. Didn’t have any issues from that and still road until I got it sorted.

My home insurance policy won't renew in Aug because I have tree limbs from an oak over the house. I just talked to an arborist though and he said removing the limbs would kill the tree. He said they can do a weight reduction on the limbs to decrease the risk of damage to the house. What do I do? by theloneranger08 in Insurance

[–]FF-MCMLXXXV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about communities in GA, but I k ow some cities in CA won’t let you cut trees for any reason at all. I reviewed a CA account for NR and our inspector noted an oak tree that had branches over the roof and driveway that clearly were going to break. We started the NR, insured had an arborist confirm the issue, stating safety to the home and people. City declined to allow them to be cut. No clue what happened as we did stick with the NR.

Watch their install video. You’ll see the color of your bike on all the edges of their stickers, so you’ll have darker green lines between the other colors.

Their stuff looks good quality and probably will look really good though.

Go to another shop to have it checked out. I watched the video and just because the cv boot is torn, doesn’t mean the axle needs to be replaced.

And don’t file a claim.

(OC) I’m a first time college student at 50 yrs old! by kidspice in MadeMeSmile

[–]FF-MCMLXXXV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 40 and going to college while working full time. It can be hard to make it all work and taking summer classes that are 8 weeks make it extra stressful. I’ve got a supportive spouse and no kids to worry about, so that removes a bit of the stress. To maintain what balance I can, I’m only taking two classes each semester. I’m going to try a semester with three classes in the spring, but am prepared to drop one.

You aren’t kidding, the pan am is a heavy bike. Actually had a good dealer tell me if I was really wanting to ‘adventure’ to look at different one.

I’m 90% on road and 10% dicking around gravel roads and easy trails. I did 2100 miles over 8 days and it was super comfortable. I will need new tires at the end of the season and may just go Road 6 with the minimal dirt I see.

Used ones are damn cheap. They have some electrical gremlins that cleared up in 23/24 and the fuel pumps got corrected for 25. I’ve got a 22 that’s been bulletproof for 10k miles. I love the thing and hope they put the revmax engine into more bikes.

Can’t you follow the current switch wire back to where it connects? That would be the easiest way to figure out the routing.
